  • New Jaguar XF spotted? 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Headlight dipped beam came from tiny Xenons pushed right out to the sides of the car, and rear lights were LEDs with a horizontal red band through a clear cluster. As it passed I noticed that the A pillar plus roof gutter and side window sills as far back as the B pillar (further back was hidden under fabric) were encased in wide chrome strip that for some reason the proportions of which reminded me of Rover 600!
  • Ford Mondeo - Large family car recommendations 6 Jul 2020 (Forum)
    - Under £12,000 - Under 50,000 mileage - Climate control would be a big plus but not essential, as would cruise control   Thanks in advance!
  • Car for commuting 13 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I'm getting just over 50mpg overall (real world not the computer) but with long journeys at the weekend too I'm doing 350+ miles a weeks so any savings would be useful. The car recently passed it's MOT but there were several advisories so there's some big bills on the way, it's at the age when things start to go wrong plus with the recommended cambelt changes every 40k the overall upkeep is getting a bit much.
  • Rising cost of Car Insurance for young drivers 22 Jun 2011 (Forum)
My two children both at that age for driving. Son 18 passed test, daughter 17 still learning. When getting Insurance quotes from comparison web sites for my son to drive his mother's car as named driver, £2200 plus. Mostly all quotes in that region. So when I tweaked the online forms a little and resubmitted I was attracted to a policy for £1400.
  • Hyundai Coupe (2002 - 2008) - Not quite so reliable, 40k report 8 May 2009 (Forum)
Mums car has just passed 40k now which works out at just over 10k per year from new. Mpg on the V6 manual comes in at around the 26 mpg mark in mixed driving, rising to 34 on long runs. We have had some issues though which sort of fly in the face of the usual Hyundai reputation, heres the list: 1.
  • Parking on private land - help please 7 May 2006 (Forum)
So I need to devise a "clearance plan" and would appreciate some pointers and views from the BR before i put it into practice. 1 - leave leaflets on cars notifying keepers politely that works will be starting on (Date A) and can you not park here after (date B) thank you very much, plus a huge board on site. Date B will be deliberately early. 2 - As Date B passes, cars still parked will get a leaflet along the lines of "please move your car, XYZ clampers start next week". Appropriate XYZ clamping signs go up. 3 - if there are still cars there, get the clampers (or buy our own clamp) and get clamping!
  • Insurance dilemma part 2 6 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Zurich were the quicker of the two, accepting their customer was fully to blame, and offering a settlement which more than covered the minimal purchase value of the admittedly low-mileage car, together with £200 over which compensated for inconvenience, my time spent recovering the car on daughter's behalf and having it inspected. Plus they let her keep the car which passed an MOT the day after the shunt. Since I have now found an identical low mileage Visa for £60 (hard bargaining down from £120 asked), the better bits from Visa No1 are being kept as spares.
  • Speed Hump Damage - Can you claim? 15 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Sure enough about four feet after the hump was a manhole cover protruding about a half inch or so from the surface of the road just in the right place to meet the sump on its way down after passing over the hump. About a yard after the manhole cover started her trail of oil. Fortunately I had a camera handy so have some nice shots of the damage to the car, the start of the oil trail, the manhole cover and its proximity to the hump plus a shot of another vehicle grounding.
  • Main Dealer = Main Stealer? - Update 29 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Sold with FSH and 12 months MoT (documents to follow). I had LR specialist inspection who queried any recent service and said it would not pass an MOT. I discover it had actually missed 4 of 6 major services and had just 2 months MOT. No interest from dealer whatsoever in rectifying. They claimed nothing wrong with vehicle as it had just been through their workshop.
  • Garage negligence 22 Mar 2022 (Forum)
This is how I have complained afterwards by email: (yesterday)  the work done was not what I asked for, which was (my words, booked by phone and on a sheet of paper handed to reception) :   -  oil and filter change, 10/40 please -  brake fluid change -  MoT test   My car seems to have been given a medium service, plus a MoT test – according to your invoice :   -  oil, air, fuel and pollen filters -  ‘full service’ -  CV boot kit, to pass the MoT test   The brake fluid, which was due to be changed, was not done.
  • Honda Civic 1.6 - Fuel consumption - bad or just normal? 14 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Normal travelling is a 5 mile commute to work with not all that much traffic along a mix of 30 / 40 / 50 roads plus trips to the shops and the odd 20 mile trip most weekends. Over Christmas we went to London. Filled it up before I left, drove down at a steady 65 on the clock. Didn't use the car while there and filled it up at the start of the return journey, I'd got just over 38.
  • Volkswagon Passat 2.0 Diesel Highline - A dealership 'free gift'! 1 Jan 2014 (Forum)
It was a litre of engine oil in a zipped plastic holder. On arrival home I checked my invoice and saw an item - 'Shell Helix Plus 1Lt @ £8.29+vat. I returned to the dealership the following day with the oil and advised the same employee that the oil wasn't a free gift, I didn't want it, and requested re-imbursement.
  • Dog getting into car (again) 4 Jan 2024 (Forum)
Eventually she pretty much stopped eating and we knew it was time. The ramp did get some use, with no passing cars it was perfect in the lounge for her the get on the sofa.
  • Skoda yeti - Accepting50/50 when not my fault 8 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I immediately rang my insurers advising them that postie admitted liability , they recorded my message but they are saying it was here say and must be 50/50 . A witness pulled up behind postie stating he had been forced to stop to allow postie to pass him minutes earlier as he was speeding. Witness waited for about 15 -20 mins whilst details taken, and we later took photo's of postie skid marks,8 metres long plus the gorged bank he hit. We marked position of accident, witness car and showed how far we were from bend.
  • 1.8L 16v P Reg Citroen Xantia for £60 26 Oct 2012 (Forum)
An engine should cost around £300 I assume and about £150 to fit, minus the possibility of selling the old one onto a recon outfit. Plus say another £100 or so for other minor repairs that may be needed, and I've got a car worth £1500 to £2000. So, I'm thinking, where's the catch? It's apparently straight, some minor front end damage was fixed under 3rd party claim about a year ago, so hopefully that's up to scratch.
  • Honda CRV mark I - Refurbish or Replace ? 4 Jan 2011 (Forum)
and 2 very minor rust spots, which have been corrosion treated. It is comfortable to drive (I'm a big guy), and has so far passed each MOT without issue. I have it serviced locally and do minor work myself - but the car came with a comprehensive honda service history when I bought the car, and had been pampered by it's previous owners.
  • Unlicenced car - help needed 10 Sep 2008 (Forum)
O.K this is not a rant about unlicenced cars or a post about an unlicenced car in the street I pass regulaly. Rather it is seeking advice on my own unlicenced car. My tax disk expired at the end feburary. The car was reported (on the 05/03/08 at 14.00) to the DVLA as being unlicenced where I usally parked it on a public road after my tax disk expired.
  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - Possible purchase. What do you all think? 15 Dec 2007 (Forum)
It´s a late ´96 2.6 V6 automatic, fairly high spec. Bad bits: undocumented 115k miles, no service history at all (book is missing). Needs new tyres, plus I think the thermostat has gone as it didn´t move off 60 deg during my test drive, the panel under the engine is cracked. It´s a bit fiddly to sort out a Fahrzeugschein (V5 equiv) for a RHD here, but I´ve done it before.
  • Sometimes things work well 3 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The whole thing was worth every cent (penny) of the £10.90 to reg and insure my bike for another year. Plus small tips of course to these obliging staff. Oh, and the cost of the Diet Coke for said starlet wannabe. All this under the trees with a cool breeze blowing and a chap pedalling by on a trike selling hot coffee, cold beer and hot dogs.
  • Small car, really sensible advice needed 10 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Size and suitability for a 5'2" petite young lady 2. Reliability and safety 3. All round value for money - purchase price and insurance plus running costs. Neither of our cars are at all suitable for her as they are both large automatics. He has a company car but commutes by train. I have a car and do less than 10,000 miles pa - so our costs are already quite high, and our cars get little use.
