The hazards of cycling in the UK in 2004 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
At the time i was too shocked to respond, but in retrospect he would have got a number of choice words from me. 3. Motorists - Roundabouts Approaching a mini-roundabout on a straight road, one turning on the right. I'm aware from past experience that people do not always stop when they should do here, and i ensure that my arm is very clearly showing my intention to turn right. -
A week with an MG3 26 Jun 2014 (Forum)
A lot of the engineering was done at Longbridge in Birmingham. Maybe they’ve still got the packaging manual they referred to for the Mini and the Metro. Unlike those cars, the 3 isn’t actually built at Longbridge though. MG was claiming part assembly in Britain but now says demand is such they’re bringing them in fully built from China. -
Peugeot? Skoda? and others - Search for a car 1 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Saw one in a showroom 1 year back and thought the interior was gorgeous Seemed to meet our needs in terms of space and size though even 1 year ago we were unsure if we still needed 7 seats, and we stayed with the Grandis The 2008 has been just out long enough that there is some (not many) in stock in our budget, even with the highly rated 1.6 THP engine (apparently same as BMW put in the MIni Cooper?) Wasn't sure if Mrs G would like it and if, when driven, it would live up to my expectations. Helpful Salesman, just right balance of sales patter and leaving us to think and talk between us. -
Nerves frayed and shot 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
That doesn't stress me at all, wife is with me and I helped dig out a yummy mummy in a stranded 207 and just before getting home we made the decision to nip to the local mini mart place for essentials. There is a main entrance on the main road and a secondary entrance from a side road which also serves for lorries to load and unload. I took the secondary road and drove round the back of the building only to find that as the road leads in to the car park, some idiot had just stopped there, left his Kangoo and gone shopping. -
Transcontinental road trip 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
The Nürburgring is the famous 13 mile track, called by Jackie Stewart, "the greatest and most challenging race circuit in the world", which, previously unbeknownst to me, is often open to the public to drive around at top speed. It was the most excellent fun and half of the cars in the car park were GB registered, from old Minis to Porsches. I promised myself then and there that if I were to live within a few hours drive of the track I would buy a so-called DRT - a Dedicated Ring Toy. For more info have a look at this interesting website by a British enthusiast http://www.nurburgring.org.uk Then we headed off south-east a couple of hundred miles to another vehicle test ground - "Off road park Langenaltheim" - the quarry based off-road driving centre 40 miles south of Nürnberg where we spent a few hours having fun exploring the limits of traction of my G-wagen's Goodyear Wranglers. -
Poor service at Honda dealers 15 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I bought my wife a Honda Civic 1.6 Executive 2001 two years ago from my local Honda dealer. Previously she had been driving a MINI One, and when she became too pregnant to drive it, we sold it and bought this one as a 'sensible' family car to do her for now. About three weeks ago, I booked the car in for it's 6th annual service (it has only done about 47k miles, but it goes off the years as well). -
Dilemma of dilemmas of dilemmas 2 Feb 2012 (Forum)
The thing is, looking through HJ's Car-By-Car Reviews, it genuinely seems almost impossible to find any diesel car that doesn't have the potential (maybe even likelihood) to go wrong in one or more expensive ways! PSA 1.6 HDI used in Ford, Mini?, Citroen, Peugeot: Fuel pump issues . DPF/fluid issues Fiat 1.3 and 1.9 also used in Vauxhalls- waterpump seizes, shreds timing belt, bends valves VAG used in Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat and others: piezo injectors, ECU software even in old 110hp 1.9; coolant loss due to porous cylinder heads, oil pump drive fail, Teves ABS issue. -
First wheels 7 May 2007 (Forum)
I don't know what happened to the Fiat but Nick was later an executive of Ford Europe, and also worked for Unipower which made a small number of mid-engined Mini Cooper-powered road bullets. Real first car (in 1962 or so) was a left-hand-drive 1948 Citroën Light Fifteen, a French-built small-boot example with the spare wheel carried on the boot lid under a pressed-steel cover. -
Forced out of car due to insurance blunder Vol 2. 15 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Truth is that I couldn't remember on the spot, but, hey, it's Easter Saturday morning after a hard week's work and I'm relaxing with the family on a nice day out laughing and joking with the wife and children - I'm not mentally geared up for a mini-trial on a cold windy motorway slip road. But think about it, the officer told me that the database told him that my insurance had lapsed on Feb.11th so when I told him that we (my wife and myself) were 99% sure that it had renewed itself automatically on direct debit why didn't he just go back to the database read-out and get the name of my previous insurer and phone them up? -
LJK Obits and more 21 Oct 2005 (Forum)
A parallel period 50 years ago, during the Suez crisis, generated novel thought and gave us the original Mini. Where?s its true spiritual successor today? LJKS?s words are more valuable today than ever ? a true legacy and compendium that should be revisited and reconsidered. The Times, Obituaries: October 8, 2005 Jock Gardner writes: One of the greatest books by L. -
16 important OIL questions answered! 8 Jan 2013 (Forum)
These days the better quality polymers resist shear even in combined engine/transmissions, so it is essential to use good quality shear-resistant types in a gearbox fed by the engine (such as the traditional mini!), which gives its oil a hard time in both engine and gearbox. Incidentally, there are large amounts of these additives and polymers in there, it's not just 'a little bit of this, a little bit of that'!
