  • Highway Code - Can't find answers to my questions 24 Sep 2016 (Forum)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) 4 exit mini roundabout - car at 6 o'clock turns right, car at 12 o'clock goes straight ahead (they arrive at the same time) http://oi67.tinypic.com/17ae5u.jpg   - Who has right of way?
  • Volvo V50 2.0 R Design - Volvo V50 2.0 R Design - Change of circumstances 29 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Anyway, my wife is changing jobs so we will lose the BMW. We will probably buy something small for her, most likely a mini as that is what she has always wanted, but the question is what to do about the Volvo. So advice needed in two parts: The Volvo MPG is poor, so should I change it for a more fuel efficient car or should I hang onto it on the basis that changing the car would cost more than the fuel efficiency gains over the next 4 years?
  • New car for SWMBO. Any thoughts 21 Mar 2009 (Forum)
BMW 3 series coupe....I honestly just don't get BMW's (apart for a perverse hankering after a 1999 or thereabouts 7 series!) they look nice in gold though! Mini: Plus points: the wife really likes them. Negatives: seems to be reliability issues? Saab 9-3 convertible: I think we'll have to test drive one. The only time I've sat in a 9-3 it seemed incredibly cramped and claustrophobic inside.
  • Young driver- help with first insurance, first car 17 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone have any recent experiences? He?s currently insured as a provisional licence holder on my wife?s Mini One and this adds £750 to her premium of £160 (Post Office) but they are not willing to insure him in his own name and we don?t want to ?front? him. I expected £800 - £1000 but £1700 seems ridiculous.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9 TDi 130 - Misfire advice needed 15 May 2008 (Forum)
All seemed fine until I tried to overtake a car and found I had no acceleration left - the car had no pull, it felt like a 1000cc mini or something. I did all the usual things, turning the engine off, waiting, restarting, etc. Nothing made any difference. It stayed that way until I spoke with a friend who said to take the petrol cap off and start the engine, so I did that and funnily enough it worked and all power came back to the engine.
  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - A question for Screwloose & other 'old-time' mechs 15 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I've been flipping back, reading through some old posts, in both the General Discussion and Technical rooms, and I've got a question for Screwloose and any other mechanics who predate the era of pervasive engine management systems. My own car-owning history only goes back 20 years or so; I began with an '82 1.0L Mini and I'm currently running around in an '03 plate Fiesta TDCi. Whats striking for me, as a not-very-good fixer of cars, is how little it seems 'modern' garages can actually do in the way of fault diagnosis that isnt computer-driven- and more importantly, how often these diagnostic tools can prove to be wrong.
  • Magic roundabout/bad music for driving 4 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Only somewhat soporofic, though I decided to avoid the M1, because I was worried about delays from the roadworks, and it probably didn't aid my comprehension on our diversion through Hemel Hempstead. Satnav doesn't really handle magic roundabouts very well: it should just say "Exit on the fourth mini roundabout", but instead you got a succession of "take the second left on the roundabout, straigt ahead". In the end I managed to go round it twice before finally escaping... Noticed many drivers decided to make a dash for it, not really paying attention to give way to the right, partly because many of the drivers on the right were rather confused by it all.
  • FWD transmission noise? 13 Jun 2002 (Forum)
The noise occurs when turning at slow speed with about 3/4 lock or more applied while accelerating (eg car parks, mini roundabouts, etc. The noise is a continuous, whining/grumbling noise (ie not a clicking CV joint type noise). It never occurs when the accelerator is not pressed, regardless of speed or amount of steering applied, and this applies whether the car is under engine braking or coasting.
  • Defending BL/Rover 2 Jul 2020 (Forum)
I just don’t think Honda really knew what to do with Rover itself and never understood the market for the new Mini which was already well under way when BMW arrived. Sadly the remnants were taken over for the price of a packet of fags by a bunch of conmen and creative accountants who only wanted to feather their own nests for as long as possible.
  • Reborn classics - your choices? 5 Aug 2009 (Forum)
BMW Z8 - I know, never a great car, and pretty recent, but it looked gorgeous. Now, we just need to sort out the handling issues... Mini (the lowercase Issigonis original). I really, REALLY don't need to explain. Issigonis' even more visionary X9001 - see http://www.aronline.co.uk/index.htm?ado17storyf.htm - would also be fantastic.
  • Citroen C4 (2004 - ) - Mini review - impressed! 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)

  • passat golf octavia fabia a4 focus - £4K estate dilemma 31 Jul 2011 (Forum)
With £4K then the newest Golfs and Fabias I can find are 2006 for cars with around 100K miles on them. Passats and A4s tend to be older for that money. I worry that the Fabia is more a super-mini estate and with the curvy tailgate on it it won't offer enough storage space. It looks like I can buy a much newer Focus for the same money - there are 2007 TDCis with around 80-90K on them. Much as a I love the VAG cars, I reckon I can pick up a newer Ford for the same money.
  • Skoda Fabia - engine stutter and high oil use 8 Jan 2011 (Forum)
That said I have toyed with various theories including, sticky valves, faulty ECU, bad electrical joint, radio frequency interference from passing mini-cabs/public service vehicles blitzing the ECUs working values. prompting a reset etc. Any ideas ? Nothing appears to show on VAG COM diagnosis. Also, the engine started consuming oil from 30,000 miles onwards.
  • Toyota Yaris II/Vitz (2006 - ) - Knife edge decision: Yaris vs. i20 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I could really do with some advice and a reality check as I'm torn between two options for buying a new car. I'm after a cheap but decent new/nearly super-mini for around-town driving and occasional longer motorway trips; anticipating a yearly mileage of around 7k. I'm coming from a '99 Mazda MX-5 which while very fun to drive is becoming increasingly impractical, expensive and has depreciated faster than I've been paying it off.
  • Rover 75 (1999 - 2005) - 04 2 Have I found a "Tracker" in my used car ?? 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
When I removed the facia trim this afternoon, I was surprised to see a big black box with multiple connections with the markings "EagleEye" and "Mini Vehicle Unit" and a large black relay. At least two of these connections appear to be co-ax and one has a loom with a tied-up PC RS232 type serial cable and there is an Ethernet network socket too !!.
  • Rat runs, main routes and traffic obstruction 31 May 2009 (Forum)
He refused to stop off for a drink at my favoured dive in Kentish Town and suggested we stop at his favourite dive in the Portobello Road, in our home district. I agreed and we set off, he in his partner's MINI and I in my rough old Escort. I got to the pub, which was crowded. He wasn't there yet. They had run out of my favourite tipple so I had to have Young's ordinaire, the next best thing. The staff took ages to get to me and I got us both a pint.
  • Main dealer rip off. Can you better this? 7 May 2009 (Forum)
No history of bulbs blowing but his comment justified checking electrics for said cost). My niece took her mini in to have a fault fixed under warranty. The fault was fixed (cooling fan) no problem but she was given a bill for £140 (may have been £180 not sure). This was because the dealer changed the brake fluid!
