Self employment - Market Niche?? 11 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Beg, borrow or convert the caravan etc - This is Cornwall after all! As suggested earlier, the two ideas could be combined. Say 1 car transporter trailer and a towing dolly for hire to both trade and private, a couple of heavy duty 1/2 or 1 tonne tippers and maybe a box van to start. I could then offer to tow any of these for the punter at an extra cost, so they have the choice. -
Ford transit custom crew cab - VAT when trading in van 6 Nov 2023 (Forum)
We paid the VAT and as we are not a business (it was bought as our daily transport and as a tow car) we haven't claimed the VAT back. Due to a change of circs, we now want to swap it to an SUV. The prices we are getting from the book for trade in are £22,000 which we are pretty sure is not inclusive of the VAT we paid. -
Vauxhall Zafira B - Zafira B electrical problems 25 Feb 2023 (Forum)
There is no ignition lights when the key is turned and I cannot even lock the car as the central locking is not working with either the fob, or key. However, when I towed it to the dealer, the electrics came on ( as soon as I stopped they went off again ). The engine still would not start though. I have tested the battery which is ok, tried the spare key, which still does nothing and tried my fault code reader, which would not even power up. -
Used Cars - Towbars 27 Nov 2022 (Forum)
Is this standard practice for traders, or is it because it's a low powered engine in this case 1.2tsi and the trader doesn't want to give the impression it's been 'stressed'? It hasn't been, the most it's ever towed is 350kg and on fewer than 10 occasions / 1000 miles. -
Our next car… please help? 18 Apr 2022 (Forum)
We want a large family car that is RELIABLE, comfortable (I’m 6’4”) and capable of towing my classic car trailer (1750kg including the trailer) to summer events. We’ve always bought our cars cash and driven them into the ground. Our budget is between £15-18k. We like the look of estates, MPV’s or SUV’s. -
Peugeot 508SW - Approved Used? 4 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Just been to test drive my potential next car, which had, according to the salesman (big national chain) been carefully prepared. 1) towing eye loose in an underfloor boot cavity. Yes, you have to know where it lives to put it away, but why is it there? 2) No Compressor/ tyre sealant in car 3) Windscreen washers producing a dribble from drivers side, nothing from passenger side. -
immobilize immobilizer? (Car won't start... blinki 24 Jun 2019 (Forum)
It's now at a service station in Brooklyn and will be looked at on Monday, but I fear that they're not going to do anything and I'll have to have it towed again to the dealer. Advice? -
Any - Rat proof floor drain plugs 27 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Seems OK, assuming they aren't very motivated (there's no food in the car) but the spare wheel-well drain (the biggest and most likely point of entry) previously had a rope through it securing the spare wheel to the rear towing eye, so now no spare wheel, which is a bit too modern for my liking. Original securing gear (probably a threaded rod into one of the lug holes on the wheel) is missing and might be difficult to replace, though that'd probably be optimal. -
Mazda 6 - Cars without spare tyre 18 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I have never been a member of the AA / RAC etc so is this something that I should consider? Would they tow you to a garage that could fix / replace the tyre? It is a bit of an oversight by Mazda not having at least a space for a spare tyre as this is something that is actually putting us off buying Mazda 6. -
Just over limit on beach 1 May 2017 (Forum)
They opened a can of lager each and sat close to the car but in the meantime a local called the police as the car should not have been on the sand (which was stuck anyway and needed the council to tow it off). As the coppers saw the drinks cans my partner was breathalysed & was positive. At the machine at the station he blew .9 over (about half a pint). He explained the circumstances and the police said they would be in touch if they decide to take the matter further. -
Mechanic failed/unable to repair car? Next Action 27 Mar 2017 (Forum)
I have a car that suddenly decided not to start. I contacted my local mechanic, who came and towed the car back to his workshop (around 0.5mile away). He was unable initially unable to identify the problem and recommended that the head be taken off to get a diagnosis. This was agreed to. -

BMW 116i n45 2006 manufacture year 2005 - Car cranks but will not start 16 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Could it just be a faulty cam sensor or vanos solenoid or coils even which are all easy to change myself before towing car to mechanic? -
Peugeot 508 SW - Registered April 2014 - Rear tyres worn out in 14000 miles 17 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Terrible uneven wear from the outside edge inwards. Only the last inner tread channel leagal. No excessive weight, no tow bar, no scratches or damage to alloy wheels and only one service at supplying dealer from new. Following an alignment check camber and tracking seriously out on the rears plus incorrect camber on O/S/F. -
Passat 2.0 tdi SEL - VW Passat injectors 20 Mar 2015 (Forum)
A few days ago, I was driving, all of a sudden I got engine warning lights and messages, the car lost all power and steering, came to an abrupt stop, and wouldn't turn back on. It was towed to a local garage who replaced a damaged injector. I happened to be aware of a recall for all four injectors being replaced, so I contacted VW who said this vehicle was recalled in 2011 and all four injectors were replaced. -
VW Golf 1.9 GT TDI (2002) - VW Golf - Engine mount failure and repair... 22 Jan 2015 (Forum)
2) Pulled over, called RAC. They suggested that an engine mount had failed (engine was 'wonky'). Towed car home. 3) Booked car into garage. 4) They called today, told me that two engine mounts had gone, including one attached to gearbox. Said the dropped engine had damaged "some hoses" also. -
Audi Allroad, Skoda Oktavia and others - Height of engine air intake 1 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Hello everyone I currently own an E53 BMW X5, bought to get through the regular foot plus of flood water we get outside our house and even up the drive, but am concerned about the poor handling on wet roads and worse still capability on wet grass; I occasionally have to tow in grass fields. I suspect this problem may be due to the 20 inch wheels and wide profile tyres. One option is to consider changing to 18 inch wheels and using all season tyres but my other option is to swop to a normal estate car but with the air intake high enough to get through this amount of water. -
Ford Focus 1.8tdci 03 - Ford Focus 1.8tdci engine blown after work done 31 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Hi forum my first post, ok so I bought a focus 1.8tdci and had work done flywheel & clutch and full service and new cam belt kit, after driving the the car for approximately 5 miles while the car was stationary with the engine running, I quickly ran into shop for some ciggrettes leaving a friend in the car, the engine stalled by itself with a clink sound, now after towing the car back to the garage I had the work done the mechanics telling me the fuel pump seized leading to the new cam belt to snap. Does that sound right or is he having me on, and he made some kind off mistake love to hear from you guys and oh he asking for £500 for a second hand engine already spent near £500 on it -
Vauxhall Vectra C - buying a >3 litre car... scouring autotrader 10 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Current Volvo is a bit too asthmatic for towing the caravan, so my cunning plan has been to do an autotrader search for a petrol engined car, 3.0 to 3.9 litre, up to 10 years old, max price £5000. As you will be aware the site narrows the range of manufacturers for you.
