  • Volvo xc70 - Insurance NCB 23 Jan 2023 (Forum)
I put a separate quote through with no NCB and it came up £980. So should I just not bother protecting them, run the risk of not being involved in an accident and save myself £400 or so. If I make a claim, then obviously I'll be spending the same as I would be more or less if I protect them. Just wondering whether under 5 years it's worth it if it means saving 400 quid.
  • KIA Ceed 1.6 CRDI - KIA Ceed 1.6 CRDI problems after clutch change 18 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Another problem is it starts from cold with a very rough idle and some white smoke from the exhaust, which smells bad. Once the car starts to warm up the idle seems ok, and it runs quite well. One strange thing I noticed is when I first start the car and the idle is rough, if I hold the clutch in while the car is in neutral the engine will rev up smoothly, but if the car is in gear the engine will hesitate to rev.
  • Ferrari Portofino M to replace an M4 convertible - Some advice please (but please keep it polite) 28 Jun 2022 (Forum)
I appreciate in the bigger scheme of things this may seem trivial but I would genuinely like some considered feedback. I run a small advisory firm and over the years we have worked hard to become recognised as the leaders in our field. Seven years ago a number of our clients took me aside and explained that I needed a better car for when I visited their head offices (I was driving a Discovery 3 at the time).
  • BMW 5 Series - BMW Customer Service 5 Feb 2022 (Forum)
The headlight was supposed to arrive in early December but it is now the end of January and they still dont know when they might have it. The car has now run out of Mot and so it is off the road. BMW customer service are so incredibly lazy, they have not done anything other than say "we understand your frustration" without having done anything further to address the situation.
  • Hyundai i20 - Reduced mpg 26 Dec 2021 (Forum)
I filled some petrol last week and on the MPG reading was going down and down and down as low as 10 miles to the gallon (I've never seen it that low) which spooked me, it has increased to high 20s since but still not great The only thing I've noticed is the bottom coolant hose is cold even after a long run, whereas the top hose is warm, is this normal? From what I can research the thermostat is coming from the bottom hose into the engine, so I'm thinking maybe by the thermostat is open or is not fully closed therfore warm coolant is not staying in the bottom hose and the colder coolant coming from the radiator is entering the engine and reducing mpg

  • Mazda CX-30 - Call Mazda First 7 May 2021 (Forum)
I know this subject has been discussed on here before (I do now anyway) and seem to have fallen into the same trap as many others, namely thinking "Call Mazda First" was a manufacturer run service as opposed to what it really is, an accident management service. Until someone piled into the side of my four month old Mazda CX-30, I had not had an accident in over 35 years so am pretty new to all of this.
  • Ford Fiesta MK6 1.4TDCI - Ford Fiesta Stalling 26 Apr 2021 (Forum)
The fiesta just had a big service last week and no problems were reported. It has around 69000 miles and apart from this problem, it runs very well.  I would appreciate any feedback you could give me.  Thank you   ps. Im a newbie on this forum and my knowledge on cars is close to none.
  • Renault kadjar - Garage mechanic tampering with dashcam 7 Mar 2021 (Forum)
My thread is here somewhere ref turbo failure. My question is about dashcams running whilst garage mechanic working on your car. When Renault dealer returned my car I found out a day later my front dashcam was playing up so took car to place where I had it fitted. It corrected itself after rebooting it.
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport - DPF just cleaned by Land Rover (AA partner) 26 Nov 2020 (Forum)
The car is 2.5 years old and I dont want It cleaning again after only doing 50miles. Dont want big bills when warranty runs out. Whats my rights? The red DFD came on and said take direct to dealer. Took to dealer and they said go home and ring roadside assistance. They come over took the car over a hours drive.
  • Volkswagen Golf Mk5 1.6 FSI - Loss of power & loud noise coming from the engine 18 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Hi guys, My 07 plate golf is been running really bad for last few months. It has massive loss of power and the revs doesn’t go over 2500-3000 RPM(feels like something’s blocked). It’s also always making very loud noise and vibrating pretty bad.
  • 2014 RAV4 - Towing electrics 30 Aug 2020 (Forum)
My otherwise perfect (literally!) 2014 RAV4 has been prone to run down its battery prematurely since fitting towing electrics 4 or so years ago.  It's only a minor inconvenience (as I now use a battery isolator when parking for extended periods) but ideally I would like to fix the issue one day.
  • Jaguar Super V8 - Selling an old SORNed car 20 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I've got a 2003 X350 Jaguar Super V8 which I used to drive but has been SORNed for about a year now. The car runs fine, but it needs both front door locking mechnisms replacing and it looks a bit of a mess as I removed the driver's door card to work on the locking mechanism. I'm semi retired now so probably won't drive it enough to make it worth taxing and insuring, hence I'm considering selling it, and I'm wondering what's the best way forward.
  • Buying advice needed - 2x adults. Hatchback? 11 Feb 2020 (Forum)
I'll also point out that as it is only ever two of us in the car, space is not the issue. The main concerns here are reliability and running costs. Any general advice, or more specific recommendations would be very much appreciated Thanks
  • VW Sharan 2007 2.0 diesel - Fuel / strong smell in VW Sharan without engine ru 5 Dec 2019 (Forum)
It smells like a fuel smell but I suppose it could be something else.  When the engine is running it doesn't seem as bad but that could be the fan clearing the smell away a bit.  The smell is so strong you can feel it in your lungs , and taste it in the back of your throat.  Car has been to 2 garages and today is at a main dealer in the hope they can find something.
  • Recommended car for my mother-in-law 22 Nov 2019 (Forum)
The vast majority of journeys will be in and around the town, occasionally venturing up the M23/M25/M40 to visit her beloved SIL (and her daughter, of course) She wants an auto Her budget is £6k I've had a cursory look on A/T for low mileage minis under 6k but they seem to be holding their value and are thus some years old.   I want her to have something safe and reliable, cheap to run, perhaps with a bit of zip and street cred (like the Cooper), and without wishing to sound morose, will still be in fine fettle when she either gives up driving or shuffles off this mortal coil.
  • Ford Ka - Non-starter then Engine rattle 11 Sep 2019 (Forum)
I know a little about cars but nothing I'd never get a second opinion on, so I told her to book into a mechanics too for them to have a run down of the car and ensure nothings failing. Thank you in advance for any help
  • Any Carburetted - Crisco on the Carburettor - A sequel to FOTR 25 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Most of the complex system of vacuum hoses (which I don't understand) was disconnected and blanked off as a response to running problems a couple of years ago. Over the past couple of months I’ve painted sunflower oil over the carburettor and inlet manifold in the hope it’d seal off any leaks. My main concern was that this would cause the throttle to stick, but short test drives have been OK   Time to go for inspection. since I’ve already got a late fine and more penalties loom (Told myself its only 20 quid but these days its 27.
  • Toyota Avensis Tourer 1.8 Valvematic Multidrive S - Looking after Toyota CVT 25 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Our usage of the vehicle is mostly short local trips (5-10 miles) and suburban stop-start driving (albeit fairly gentle stuff) with the occasional longer run every few weeks. We plan to keep the vehicle for as long as we can so I am keen to ensure the transmission is looked after. Admittedly, I still have 18 months until the replacement is due even in the worse case!
  • Peugeot 3008 1.6 e-HDi 115 EGC auto - Bought a new car - Have i done the right thing :) 21 Jun 2019 (Forum)
I thought about getting it repaired but decided, even though I loved the car it was costing me an arm and leg in Petrol to run. Was getting probably 25 MPG so decided to Ebay it for Parts... Last night I went to nosey around The Car People in Manchester, pretty pleasant experience to be fair! Anyway 2 hours later, I've bought a Peugeot 3008. 40k on the clock.
