  • Golf 1990. fuel mixture & idle speed 13 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My Golf that I bought a month ago is due for the MOT and when I changed the plugs it was apparent from looking in the Haynes manual that the fuel mixture is too rich. Also, even when it is warmed up and the choke put in the engine seems to be running a bit fast. I just phoned a local garage about getting the carburettor adjusted and the timing done and was told there isn't much hope for an old Golf. He said the carburettors used for those were a problem and could not be adjusted.
  • Fuel additives - how poisonous?! 28 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I ended up stinking of it last week when I filled up the last time and I was more successful then. It's a shame as the car does run a lot more smoothly on the stuff. I'm in two minds about whether to quit using additive and go for an unleaded conversion (how much for a triumph vitesse 2 litre one wonders?) or give millers vsp a go as it has a bottle with a long and narrow neck.... and millers can be used in double concentrate without worrying so you can dump the whole lot in 20 litres. teabelly
  • Which Estate? 16 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My shortlist so far: 1. BMW 318 Touring - My BMW has been extremely reliable and reasonably cheap to run. 2. Audo A4 Avant - Recommended by a friend. 3. Ford Mondeo - Recommended by a work colleague - I had a Ford Sierra once which was a pile of rubbish, so I would need some convincing on this one! Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome.
  • Peugeot specialist? 14 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Well, I've got my 306 DTurbo running again after an engine transplant (I dont ever want to have to do that again!) but I have a problem with a noticeable amount of diesel smoke when its off boost. The diesel pump I am using is a Lucas off my old dead engine which I know is fine.
  • Spark Plugs-blue flashes visible. Astra 25 May 2005 (Forum)
I've been having trouble recently with my Vauxhall Astra 1.4 H reg recently with it juddering and losing power when conditions are cold and damp. When the engine warms up it runs fine. Now I've just been out to the car (it is 12am) and very dark, cold and damp, so I thought I'd check to see if there was any High Voltage arking coming from the HT leads and I noticed I could see intermittent small blue flashes coming from the area where the end of the HT leads make contact with the spark plugs.
  • Mercedes W124 advice welcome 18 May 2005 (Forum)
After a weekend of polishing and cleaning it looks very presentable, just a couple of supermarket dings for dentmaster or whoever to sort. I am aiming to run it for the foreseeable future and want to do whatever is sensible to ensure longevity over short term economy. I reckon to get the fluids changed - auto trans, coolant and brake - and sort out a couple of tyres.
  • Dead Mini 9 May 2005 (Forum)
It's a 1971 model with a 998cc engine. I bought it as a light restoration project, and it has been running ok trundling in and out of the garage for various bits of bodywork to be repaired etc. However, today i've gone out and it refuses to start, not even the slightest hint of even firing. So, i've spent the last 4 hours fiddling around and it still refuses to play ball.
  • Agressive Drivers 28 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I was crossing the road a short way down from a junction when an idiot pulled into the road with no signal, on his mobile fone and it appears without having seen the pedestrians crossing. stopped in middle of the road to avoid being run over!! the guy put his hand on his horn, didnt slow down and looked directly at me as he drove past. I gestured towards the junction and mouthed the word signal at him then crossed behind him to carry on home.
  • Garage Issue - Help Sought 11 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Now been advised the cambelt has jumped Two issues:- What might cause this and how far am I justified in pushing the garage for an explanation and at least a contribution to cost. Secondly, I?m having to make the running in getting information. Had to chase yesterday for any sort of progress, told cambelt problem and that further dismantling/investigation required. No more information today, chased again to be told dismantling complicated job, lots to do including skimming head (surely that?
  • Why Not Signum? 4 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It's innovative, quiet, with great rear, adjustable (recline and slide like front seats) seat leg room, more than ample boot even with the seats back, terrific engines, looks better than any GM car except perhaps the new Astra, cheap to run. Down-side - well the interior lacks the polish of the prestige makes it would like to rival. Ford and VW seem to do its top-end range plastics better than Vauxhall/Opel at the moment, and the X-type or C class are undoubtedly smarter but apart from that, what a bargain!

  • SAAB (mostly) cold starting problem 4 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Oh, and they had the oil changed within the last 6 months also and she doesn't use it much so no high mileages or lots of runs involved. Does anyone have any other suggestions if changing the coil doesn't help? Apparently this one year does not have a feature connector on the ECU so they can't even plug it in and see if any faults have been registered...
  • Peugeot 306 d turbo engine problem 14 Dec 2004 (Forum)
it isnt using any oil or water and there isnt any water in the oil or vice versa, fuel consumption seems no diferent from usual other than that it starts and runs just fine no rattles or smoke (other than what i mentioned above). only that it just doesnt seemd to GO like it used to but im not sure whether thats just me im thinking its maybe a fueling problem, ie kankered pump, worn/dribbling injectors or injection timing, or maybe it somthing more serious please help, im fed up of driving slow and not being able to put my foot down on the motorway for fear its going to self destruct
  • Focus - squeaky - Alternator? 20 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I've only really noticed now in the cold mornings but when I start the car, there's a constant squeak. Once it's warmed up, quiet as a mouse - runs sweet as a nut. I've heard the words alternator and air-con something or other mentioned - particular on the Focus and either something needs lining up, or tightening. Any ideas? Next "problem" (and I say this because they don't bother me but I wouldn't mind getting them sorted.
  • Buying a 5 Series 25 Oct 2004 (Forum)
It should, in theory, be possible to purchase a facelift E39 5 Series on around an X or a Y plate, in excellent condition, from a BCA Top Car Auction for around £10k. You could run this car for a year-18 months, putting no more than average mileage on it, and then sell the car privately for the price you paid at auction - around £10k. You could then use this £10k to buy a replacement E39 5 Series, say, on an 02 or 52 plate by this time.
  • Gutless hire cars? 25 Oct 2004 (Forum)
At times, you had to change down to 4th or even 3rd to get any 'poke' out of the engine when travelling up inclines, and the airconditioner running was also like having a sack of weights in the boot ... Yesterday, I managed to drive one at the coast - and though the performance was slightly better, it was hardly the quickest thing about, and left a lot to be desired when overtaking, etc.
  • Nissan QX Tachometer fault (auto) 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
The symptoms are, 1) from idling rises to 1500rpm is fine 2) continuous increase in revs above 1500rpm causes the revs dropped to around 700rpm 3) lift-off or change-up (auto), which causes the revs to drop, causes the tachometer to rise from previous 700rpm back to 1500rpm 4) if keep constant speed, contants revs and thottle openning, the needle fluctuate a small amount (+/- 50rpm) at 1500rpm. The car runs as normal which I guess the Engine Control Module (ECM) is operating without fault. Is there much I can do? I cannot find the location of the ECM to verify the output signal to the tacho, which is what I prefer to do before I take apart the dash to get to the back of the instrument cluster.
  • Computer related questions. Volume 27 5 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I'm therefore working from a restored version of my Outlook.pst file so maybe that has caused some kind of problem (the inbox repair utility found some errors initially but when I've run it the last few times it says the file is fine). I've also done a google looking for answers but nothing seems to fit. Anyone come across this before?
  • Insurance claim ? 11 Sep 2004 (Forum)
On grounds the other driver did dangerous manouvre/obstucted highway etc. 2) Knock for knock, on grounds of blocking highway/daughter should have avoided hitting her 3) other driver makes claim against daughter for running into her whilst stopped on side of road ? 4) Some other permutation ? Also bear in mind Golf probably worth less than cost of repairs, though otherwise excellent motor, and keen to keep it on the road!
  • Mondeo 1.8TD smokin' 14 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Story went incredibly similar to the recent post about the Peugeot 406TD. Car is now starting and running as it was originally, but is idling jumpily when the engine gets warm and I've noticed puffs of bluey white smoke kicking out the back while it's doing this. Doesn't seem to smoke when driving, not so that you can see in the mirror at least, even when I've tried giving it a kicking.
