Double Standards Officer. 18 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Rockingham and Santa Pod were suggested as alternative suggestions for speed related malarkey. Strange, then, that a mere seven pages later an article on the new Mini Cooper S is printed, heralding its 135 mph capability and seven second 0 - 60 times. The article went on to say "the important figures I like to quote are the 50 - 75 mph overtake time" and last time we looked, 75 mph was illegal and surely not important at all. -
Caravan towing speed record 5 Nov 2002 (Forum)
This record is also under investigation as a world normally-aspirated production car towing record. Details of this will be confirmed shortly. So what\'s the world record for towing a shed? And, if they can go that fast, why do the old f**** always tootle along at 60 km/h? -
Feeling menaced? 19 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Drivers in the East Midlands are the least concerned 17 per cent of them recording some unease, while their counterparts in the North West go down as Britain?s wimps with 37 per cent. And a whopping 69 per cent of drivers surveyed confessed it adversely affected their normal driving habits when a bike is behind or beside them". -
Blind spots, wing mirrors. 17 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Needless to say, I and the other driver were more than a touch discombobulated. I have been advised that Halfords sell a small mirror that one sticks onto one\'s wing mirror so improving visibility. Has anybody out there any experience of such an item and could advise whether it works or not. Is there any other solution to this problem. I am going on a trip of approx. 450 miles within the next few weeks so would really, really like to lesson the risks of any further incidents. -
4X4 that runs on both Petrol and Diesel 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Anyway, we set about looking for this mysterious vehicle, only to come across the then newly introduced (to Sri Lanka) Nissan Patrol; Unfortunately our friend?s English wasn?t that great ? he had mistaken the word Patrol for petrol and also seeing the word diesel on the rear of the Nissan had put 2 and 2 together and made??... Worn Ford key 21 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Sister in law got stuck outside her local chipper last night in her fiesta (mid 90's I think) she could turn the key in the ignition, but with no resistance, there was no electrical activity and the steering lock would not come off, so the car could not even be towed. Sods law kicked in and where it was parked turned into a clearway in the morning! -
Mega-stars wot I know. 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Seems OGL* is scheduled for another appearance on LBC this Saturday. 1) who's listening ? 2) anyone know what time (current UK time) ? Their website doesn`t show it. 3) who`s got the wotsits to review him in the same way you do Driven/Top Gear ? (not me). Also, HJ, I know that you`ve done this stuff for years without my help (interference) but would you like me to prepare a crib sheet for you listing all the possible answers in case someone rings up with a Freelander query ? -
Kenlowe Hot-Start - The Saga Continues 14 Jan 2002 (Forum)
In case anyone was discouraged from getting one of the devices by my tale(s) of woe:- Kenlowe has kindly replaced the heater/pump unit again, but after some discussion with them & my garage, it was suggested that the continuing failures were probably due to the switchback routing of the connecting pipes' resulting in airlocks developing, at the top of each hump. -
Follow on to car jacking thread 27 Nov 2001 (Forum)
UK fuel duty is there because its a travel contained within the UK situation, whereas airlines are operating an import/export business and it needs the whole world to agree on duties. My thoughts, what about domestic flights? Next time I put thick end of £50's worth of diesel in how far do you think I would get with the line that I should not pay duty am on my way to a meeting re exporting UK products and importing some wine, beer & ciggies. Really this makes my blood boil and is just typical of the lack of joined up thinking of this shower of incompetents in Government etc. -
LPG 26 Nov 2000 (Forum)
In Honest John,s Telegraph column a correspondant was (more or less) rubbishing LPG powered cars. Here in Australia the current story is very different. Ford sells its big car, 4.0 litre six (FALCON), sedan, wagon and utility with factory fitted dedicated LPG as an option. -
My daughter's car was stolen without the alarm being set off - how did this happen? 17 Sep 2018 (Ask HJ)
My daughter's 2013 Ford Kuga was stolen two days ago from outside her bedroom window at night. We're stumped how the thief gained access without setting... -
An extended test drive of a new shape Audi A6. 12 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The suspension on that car was rock hard and I hated the car because of it. From what I have read, Audi S Lines and very hard suspension go hand in hand together so I have never considered them. That and the fact most Audi’s look boring in my eyes…. Anyway, I phoned the lease company and asked for an S-Line as I wanted the worst ride possible; to really see if this car can be acceptable for a family of four and be comfortable doing 30,000 miles per year. -
DIY Transport Policy 4 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Forget about trying to persuade people en masse to use buses instead of cars ? it won?t work, and there?s no point trying to build a transport strategy around the assumption that it will. 2. Dedicated bus lanes are pointless ? they just create a tailback which stretches beyond the point where the bus lane starts, and the buses get trapped with the rest of the traffic. -
Suzuki swift - 2024 swift 23 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Still got a few bits of hard plastic inside but much improved over the last model, the interior was quite a nice place to sit, plenty of adjustment in the comfortable and supportive seat, controls all felt nicely weighted and the large infotainment screen, lifted from the latest S-Cross apparently, was a doddle to navigate. The new 3 pot engine had plenty of go despite only having I think around 80 horse powers, you do get that off beat 3 cylinder "thrum" on pulling away but around town it was all but silent. -
Electric Transit on trial 24 Mar 2024 (Forum)
My firm (a local bus and coach company) has sitting it its bank a tax payer funded grant which has to be spent on electric buses. We’ve bought two Sigma 8’s, which have proven to be a disappointment due to range and poor reliability - one has been off the road for months awaiting parts. We’ve also bought a Mercedes based minibus which has also proven to be next to useless. -
Toyota Estima - Imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan…or something else?!? 3 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I’m in the market for a spacious (and reliable) used 7 seater with a budget of £12,500 Must haves are: petrol, auto, heated front seats, raised seating position OR comfortable drive (due to my disability), reversing camera, room for 2 teenagers in all of the rear 5 seats (so no Qashqai+2 for ex.) but also not as big as a van styled motor such as the Alphard or Berlingo Would be nice: leather/half leather trim, tray tables to back of front seats, half decent mpg After much deliberation I’ve cut it down to an imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan - around an 11 plate or newer, with less than 100k on the clock and good history (Verso is too small, XC90 worries me with repair bills, don’t fancy a Zafira, Galaxy, S Max, Grand Picasso, or Alhambra) Have I missed anything worth considering - such as an older X5? - and if not, which would be a better investment to try and get 6 or more years of well serviced motoring from?? -
Anyone bought a used tesla? 31 Dec 2023 (Forum)
I know there are more sensible options but I think the joy I'd get from the car is worth a bit of extra money and the risk of financial oblivion if the battery dies. My max budget would be £30k but I've seen older model 3's for less than 20. -
Skoda Kamiq - Can't decide between two cars 28 Dec 2023 (Forum)
They both have good reviews, but the main dealer with 18inch wheels has probably the best reviews I've seen from a main dealer. As I'm near the top of my budget, it's not ideal for me to look at another set of 17's. Any input would be helpful, as maybe I'm getting hung up on the details. -

What is the correct tyre pressure settings for all-season tyres on the Honda CR-V? 22 Nov 2022 (Ask HJ)
