  It was competitive in its early years, but by around 1993 the cracks were starting to show, with all-new rivals such as the Fiat Punto, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Corsa bringing the supermini market bang up to date. The Metro, with its external rain gutters, cramped boot, upright driving position and bouncy ride was not a brilliant supermini, even though its popularity in patriotic Middle England meant it continued to sell well throughout.  There was one Metro, though, that was a real jewel in the crown.

  The styling was hardly inspiring, either, with its angular snout giving it a long front overhang that didn’t sit particularly well with its stubby rear.  The engine range, meanwhile, was comprised largely of ancient Renault units, while the build quality failed to match the tank-like indestructibility of the 700 Series saloon and estate. Despite the Swedish branding, the 440 was manufactured in the Netherlands by Nedcar, in what used to be the DAF factory.

  ‘One of rallying’s true icons, the MG Metro 6R4 stands up there with legendary 80’s classics like the Audi Quattro, Lancia 037 and Renault 5 Turbo,’ explains Lionel Abbott, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. Abbott added, ‘This is the closest you can get to driving a Group B rally car on the road. A homologation special like this with such low mileage presents a rare opportunity for rally fans and enthusiasts alike.’ For many rally fans, the Group B era still represents the pinnacle of the World Rally Championship, when cars were allowed unlimited amounts of boost and machines produced upwards of 600bhp.

  As well as honouring the military and service personnel, the theme also affords itself to celebrating those marques that have also reached huge milestones such as 130 years of Rover, 120 years of Renault, and 110 years of the Ford Model T. There are also those vehicles that have been ‘built to last’ so that they can be passed down from generation to generation, undertake epic journeys and challenges, and even remain on the roads to this day – some with their original drivers.

One of the finalists is Jonathan Smith's milk float.

  Trio of Grand Prix legends set for Silverstone Classic 16 Jun 2016 (News)
  All three head-turners are known winners, having been raced by world champions, and will appear at the Northamptonshire event on 29-31 July. The first is the Williams-Renault FW18 in which Jacques Villeneuve took victory at Silverstone exactly 20 years ago in 1996.
