Toyota Yaris - Toyota Yaris, which engine? 15 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I'm not sure the milage I will be doing will justify buying a diesel. Want something cheap to buy, cheap to run and reliable. I'm looking to spend under 3k, preferable closer to 2. I've found a pretty decent 1.5 petrol on a 2002 plate woth 30k miles for just under 3k. Edit : also wondering about the 1.4 Honda jazz (2010ish), they're about 4k woth similar milage. -
Jensen Interceptor - Classic car prices - if only we knew then ... 18 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Back in 2007 I spent a very happy hour at Cropredy Bridge Garage, the Jensen specialist, looking at the cars they had for sale and the 'Interceptor graveyard' out the back. I still have the printed price list from that visit. A decent running car with 12 months MOT and some history was £8,995, and a '72 SP (the hottest model with 350+BHP) with a fully-documented restoration was £20,000. Even with inflation, that's about £25,000 today. -
Ford Focus - A/C not working after lockdown 30 May 2020 (Forum)
I checked and the compressor's clutch is engaging, the compressor is spinning and the system seems to be running but no cool air. I had re-gassed the system a couple of years ago, not because of any fault but because I was told it was probably best. Is it that the lack of use of the A/C over winter plus the lockdown led to the refrigerant leaking out? -
Ford B-MAX - Ford B-Max - Ecoboost engine issue 27 Mar 2020 (Forum)
As this engine can and has catastrophically failed due to coolant loss, including engine-bay fire, an inspection seems perfectly reasonable to me - but Ford wants £77. I made clear it's only that system I want checking. The car's running fine, but given the expense and inconvenience if it DID fail for this reason, from the customer's perspective it seems reasonable - or am I expecting too much? The engine problem and Ford's initial sloppy response has been widely reported in the media. -
If you're going to test-drive an EV or PHEV.... 16 Feb 2020 (Forum)
They had a BMW 225xe available (most dealers don't), and as I like to start a short-list a year or so in advance I arranged a test-drive - only to find that it wouldn't run on electric power. Battery low, according to the screen. I've generally been lucky with car salespeople in the past: this one was keen and friendly but was new to the job and had no product knowledge of hybrids. -
BMW repair history check by VIN number 30 Jan 2020 (Forum)
I want to check the repair history for my BMW. The main dealers can do this, by performing a lookup against my car?s VIN and running a detailed ?Vehicle History Report?, but won?t do it in the depth I require unless they receive written authorisation from the previous owner. Which probably won?t be forthcoming. The type of information I want to find out includes the service codes, showing the issues the car had when it came in for each service. -
Skoda Octavia - 2016 mondeo or 2017 octavia 25 Dec 2019 (Forum)
It'll be roughly the same price as octavia Which would be better from a comfort reliability resale and general running costs point of view? Or is there other cars I should be looking at? Thanks -
Ford Focus Cmax 2.0 TDCI - EGR valve problem 10 Dec 2019 (Forum)
My question is: Is it possible to get the EGR changed on these models and get the engine running without programming/re-calibrating? I'm worried the mechanic either didn't change the EGR valve at all (they just cleaned it), or they changed it but didn't re-calibrate it? TIA -
MG ZS 2017 - ! year on. Turned out quite nice..... 18 Nov 2019 (Forum)
Car doing what i bought it for, and to join the debate in the other post, it does seem to be slightly better on economy on premium fuels, but the engine definitely runs better on premium 98. One of the points that has helped, is having the excellent Kerridges in Needham Market https://www.kerridges.co.uk/ as a servicing/warranty dealer. -
Any - French tunnel dropping barriers mystery 3 Sep 2019 (Forum)
I can't see anything online about these lights and barriers. We wondered if it was to control pollution? It seemed pretty dangerous to stop the running lanes without any form of countdown. Anybody any idea what was going on? -
Vauxhall Astra 1.8 vvt 2006 - camshaft worn and loud, likely any other damage? 15 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Hello, My sisters 2006 55,000m, astra is making a very noticeable camshaft noise, when running. No oil lights or fault codes are stored. The VVT solenoids have been modified by the local vauxhall garage and are not to blame. The noise is definitely coming from the camshaft area. -
immobilize immobilizer? (Car won't start... blinki 24 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Hello! My car was running fine last night and this morning. Later in the morning, when I tried to start it, the car would turn over and catch, but then die. The little "car and key" icon continues to flash on the dashboard, which means that the anti-theft device (immobilizer) is active. -
Abarth Grande Punto - Car paint , pros and cons of metallic over non 30 Apr 2019 (Forum)
I used to professionally spray cars using good old cellulose paint in the 1980s . Brilliant stuff if you got a run you could wet flat and polish and it looked amazing. I left the body trade in the early 90s so forgive my lack of knowledge now . Fast forward to 2019 and I think most car paints are now water based. -
Toyota Corolla Verso - OIl restorers 9 Apr 2019 (Forum)
I remember some years back the story of how two Hillman Hunters (1725cc 5 bearing) were driven to Brands Hatch. One filled with standard oil, the other with Molydusolfied. Bothe cars were drained of oil and run around for 10 laps. Ordinary oil seized and theor other filled back with the Molyslip and driven home. Examined by AA, molyslip car suffered little wear. So on came the product called Molyslip, an additive that would "cure" some issues. -
Ford Focus - Good car for long commute 25 Mar 2019 (Forum)
This would work out around £200-250 per month for five years. Alternative is to keep running the Corsa and save the money for repairs or replacement when it finally gives in. Any thoughts on either of these options, and what cars I should be looking at? -
Honda Civic Type R 2016 - Extended makers warranty. 13 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Daughter's Honda warranty runs out in March, we've just collected the car after some warranty work coincidentally, wiring loom replacement that would have been some £700 all in, and she enquired about extended warranty whilst there. -
Peugeot 308 1.6hdi 92bhp 2010 - Flat battery 24 Jan 2019 (Forum)
What battery would you recommend? There are 440cca, 540cca or yuasa do a £120 battery at 760cca. I have a dash cam running off the 12v cigarette socket and I charge my phone via the socket as well. For information. The battery was slow to turn over last week and after 7 days parked up idle its suddenly died today and will not turn over at all. -
Prius mpg on motorways 19 Jan 2019 (Forum)
From my usage pattern, a Prius would make good sense for my local journeys (would have to be about 10yrs old though - all I could afford), but also, quite a chunk of my usage is long runs (360+ mile round trips). I'm interested to know just how many MPG a Prius will truly get on a long steady cruise like that. The 'Real MPG' section isn't able to provide that level of detail. -
Which sports/fast car? 11 Oct 2018 (Forum)
Also be under the insurance radar such as not involved as much in insurance statistics and in lower insurance groups be a bonus. Spare parts are easy to get not rare expensive and preferably cheap to run servicing and maintenance. Do sports/fast cars also have to comply with Euro 4 or 5 or 6? Sort of like a fun practical commuter car you know what I mean. -
Ford focus mk1 - Mk1 focus clutch slip 21 Sep 2018 (Forum)
B) care to suggest if it's worth doing, the car must be essentially worthless C) suggestion for replacement. Ideally an estate for around £2_3k she does tip runs with all our lab/office waste and for home jobs too. She already has a slightly less beat up 02 reg corsa
