Recent Journey a Rare Delight 16 Jul 2007 (Forum)
At the weekend just gone I drove down to Stevenage from Sunderland for a party on Saturday night and drove back yesterday. There were no traffic jams or holdups, only a few trucks on the road and most folk were driving around the 70mph limit, my chosen speed. Going North on the A19 I passed numerous classic cars obviously driving home from a show somewhere. I arrived at my destination at both journey ends in a calm and relaxed state. -
Honda Civic 6 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Reminds me of Knightrider... not in a bad way (what impresses teenager in the 80s, looks like a cheap heap today) Everying about this car suggests it is a sporting drive: low driving position which is a novelty for todays cars, drilled aluminium pedals, knatty gear box (which worries me as it is not clear how 6th is distinguished from reverse). Then there is the injun noise and of course the needless rear spoiler. -
Anybody with a 1.5 Dci (106) Scenic? 2 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I have just been looking at the stats on the 1.5 Dci (106) Scenic/Grand Scenic and it could fit the bill. Most of my driving is motorway driving (40,000 miles pa) at a steady 70-75MPH. The fuel economy that the Scenic offers ON PAPER seem terrific, what are they actually like on the motorway? What consumpton do you guys actually get? -

Power and Torque figures 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
When one reads the specifications for a vehicle, they always give the maximum power and torque figures - eg 110 bhp at 5800 rpm, 110 lb ft at 4000 rpm. These figures are very useful for giving one an idea of how how the vehicle is going to drive. But it struck me that because of the way I drive, I'm probably more interested in how much power and torque a car have at 2500 or 3000 rpm. And of course, those figures are never given (though one can sometimes find graphs which will give you the information you want). -
Rover T series Timing 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The question I have is in refitting the camshaft timing sprockets in the correct position. They have slots from the central bolt hole marked "in" and "exh" with corresponding drive pins in the camshafts. My question is which way round do the pulleys fit onto the drive pins? The timing marks are also marked inlet and exhaust, and these should line up horizontally, with I think the inlet markings on the inlet side of the head. -
MINI One or MINI Cooper? 16 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Has anyone any experience of comparing a MINI One with a Cooper? I don't think that we need or can afford the S. Journeys are mainly her driving 5 miles to and from work, plus me borrowing it for some long business trips to keep the mileage under control on the Audi. The question is really - in day-to-day driving, is the extra pace of the Cooper worth it? -

New motoring offences 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Just caught a short piece on the news that there is going to be a series of new motoring offences which include (IIRC) "causing death by careless driving" (max. sentence 5 years) and "causing death whilst driving without an MOT, insurance etc." (max. sentence 2 years). Whilst I'm sure many people feel there have been serious gaps/weaknesses in the law which have often leading to apparently grossly inappropriate sentences, are these new laws going to make any real differences or are they just an example of an unpopular government kite-flying? -
Strained noise from mondeo normal? 11 Sep 2005 (Forum)
The dealer assured that the noise is just normal but on cold starts especially there is what i can only describe as a vibrating type sound coming from the engine, kinda like something is loose maybe? its a ghia x tdci 2005. also when driving the car i have managed to stall it 3 times, 2 of them dangerously, ie junction. does the car need loadsa gas to get going or is it my car that is messed up, if i let the car drive forward with no revs slowly the revs dip suddenly and then just before the car stalls they shoot up to stop it from stalling, is this normal? -
GPS Safey Alerts Systems 24 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I am interested to know more about GPS Systems that alert you to speed cameras, accident blackspots etc. I have read that the use of them can reduce accidents but it strikes me that if we drive within the speed limit there would be no need for these devices at all. I like gadgets and was wondering about getting a Road Angel or Snooper Evolution - but would it just be a waste of money and make me rely on the device being alert rather than me being alert and driving properly??? -
Honda Jazz 21 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I went with my wife for a test drive today, in the CVT version. I didn't drive it but we were both very impressed with it. The ride is good and the internal space is excellent. The auto box changes gear very smoothly, the handling is good and the engine is refined. -
One-handed steering 4 Apr 2005 (Forum)
My parnter insists on driving her car with one hand on the steering wheel with the other varioulsy on the gear lever (horror of horrors - as was Jason!) or on her left leg. Where and why does this habit originate from? -
Are 'P' plates a good idea? 4 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I'm not so sure. Having been assisting Mrs V learn to drive I've been in a car equipped with 'L' plates for the first time in over 20 years. What I've noticed is that 'L' plates seem to attract moronic behaviour rather than assuage it. Anyway, her test rapidly approaching' she's asked me whether I'd suggest she drive using 'P' plates if/when she passes. -

Dad wants a new car 17 Feb 2005 (Forum)
He currently has a L plate Rover 214sli, which I have said (to his utter dismay) is worth a few hundred quid. He never drives on the motorway, never goes above 3000rpm, never drives quickly at all. He will probably keep the car until it gives up the ghost. his only requirements are - fitting the weekly shop into the boot, reliable, 5 doors. -
