Proposals to speed restrict cars 2 Jan 2009 (Forum)
That would seem to give the freedom to relax while motoring - watching out for road and traffic hazards - rather than cameras and speed limits that switch repeatedly between 30 and 40 on certain `revenue` roads. http://tinyurl.com/ay5h2t -
SatNav - coming next month 27 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Not sure if theis is a general discussion point or if the mods want to move to SatNav specific thread. Blaupunkt have a new system coming next month which uses a camera on the back of the unit to give a realtime image and overlays the directions. It also recognises speed limits and provides warnings. http://www.blaupunkt.com/de/7612201660_main.asp Can't help wonder how it will look when driving in a blizzard at 3am. -
PCN issued via cctv on private land 7 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I received a PCN issued through the post from a private company after parking in the loading bay area of a local shopping centre after overheating due to the fan for the radiator packing up. They say they have a contract with the landowners and there is a sign in place warning of camera surveillance. There is no manouvere for appeal. I've never dealt with a private company before. Is this ticket enforceable? -
Look to Iran for motoring offence punishment. 6 May 2008 (Forum)
According to my latest car mag. contraveners of traffic laws in Iran now risk up to 74 lashes or a year in jail, 70 in a 30 not quite so attractive anymore eh. Far more effective than 1000s of ugly speed cameras too I'll wager (and cheaper). Now that really is my last word on the subject. Have a safe weekend all. Cheers Bill -
Number plate cloning 27 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I have been in an incident recently where I think somebody may have tried taking a photo of my number plate with a camera phone with the intention of using it for cloning purposes. I have let the police know and i'm also planning to write to the dvla to inform them. Just wanted to know if anybody has any knowledge and if my worries are warranted. -
What SatNav @ Costco 15 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hi All Anyone know what Satnav is sold at Costco, I think I will go for the Tom Tom one Europe as it not too expensive and seems to tick all of my boxes, ie europe coverage, speed cameras, with or without sugar etc etc. Anyone used this one before ? If they sell it a costco then I'll make the trip there, but as you know with costco there is no way of checking what they stock. -
PIPS Spike system on M5 ? 21 May 2007 (Forum)
Going north bound on Devon section of the M5 tonight about 2 miles from the Somerset border and spotted what looks like the PIPS Spike system bolted to the railings on a bridge. Consists of small light grey tubes, one over each carriageway. Thought at first these were speed cameras but a bit of digging tonight has revealed they are probably ANPR devices. Can anybody confirm this (and the location too) -
Quad bike legality? 1 Feb 2007 (Forum)
If a motorcycle combination doesn't require a front number plate. What about a three wheeler (Reliant)? I'm thinking money-making (sorry speed) cameras. -
Squashed 300C 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Local news reports a disgruntled man destroying a house with a hired digger.....as the camera pans round there is an 06 reg 300C half buried in the rubble. I just thought I'd share this with Murphy the Cat - I don't know if there's any collective mourning that needs to happen.....if it's any consolation I thought it was a Bentley at first. -
A Lesson Not Learned 27 Jan 2006 (Forum)
As reported on BBC Welsh News; Motorcyclist Lee Beddis from Ebba Vale was killed when he hit a car at 100mph on a single carriageway road while travelling to work. In May 2002 Mr Beddis made legal history when he was convicted for riding past a police camera at 155mph, then the fastest speed ever recorded on the public highway. It led to a years ban. The coroner recorded a verdict of Death by Misadventure. -
Talex Lite 22 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Has anyone had any experience of this speed camera warning device? If you're thinking of getting one, you may still find your local Somerfield/Kwiksave with pre-Christmas stock now selling at £39.99. Talex very kindly tipped me off, and I bagged the last one in my local store. -
Blindspots when reversing 29 May 2005 (Forum)
I remember hiring a Focus several years ago and finding reversing very difficult. I believe that there is a push on in the US to get reversing cameras fitted to SUVs. Something needs to be done. -
Foreigners 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Very sorry if this has been discussed before....... Do the drivers of foreign registered cars caught speeding by the UK revenue cameras receive a ticket back home in France or wherever ? Or can they belt around sticking up two fingers...so to speak. (Actually most of them that hit the motorway at night in the rain only a minute after getting off the ferry at Portsmouth seem pretty intimidated judging by the way they try to keep out of everyone's way :) ) -
Interior lights when driving 22 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I thought the people on TV driving around at night with the interior light(s) on was simply to aid the camera shot but have noticed quite a few drivers doing exactly this. Surely this considerably reduces their ability to see out, although it could explain why they need their headlights and foglights on all the time? -
Exchanging information after an accident 18 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I haven't (touch wood) had an accident but I want to know the legal situation in case it ever happens. I already carry a disposable camera in the car. Thanks Pete -
Contents of boot 29 Dec 2003 (Forum)
in my toolbag in the boot, I've taken out all but what I consider to be essential. I am now left with jack, torque wrench and sockets for wheelnuts and spark plugs, single-use camera in case of an accident, torch, AA membership card, and mobile phone. I hope I'm not tempting providence! -- L'escargot by name, but not by nature. -
On the Spot Fines. 13 Feb 2003 (Forum)
My spy in sunny North Wales (Mr Brunstrom's area) tell me that North Wales Police intend to pilot "on the spot fines" in the true sense of the phrase, targetting foreign drivers who currently break the limits. Apparantly nearly 300 cars caught by Speed Cameras in January were registered aborad. I can attest to being overtaken by Irish registered Artics and cars at crazy speeds when on the A55 recently. -
Motorway Speeding 9 Apr 2002 (Forum)
A simple question: Has anyone personal knowledge of a motorist prosecuted for driving on a UK motorway (with the NSL of 70mph in force) at : A. 75-80 mph B. 80-85 mph I have not. I am aware the mere mention of speed cameras, speed limits or the police is sufficient to drive Bogush and his ilk into a frenzy. However it would be nice to have simple answers without them hijacking this thread for their crusade. C -
Driving with no rear plate. 22 Aug 2001 (Forum)
It's back on now but I would suggest for the 'one off' long distance high risk drive this is the ideal Camera risk avoidance strategy. (And no, I didn't deliberately speed - jsut using plate removal as belt and braces...) -
Motoring myths 13 Oct 2005 (Forum)
If a police officer thinks your driving is putting others at risk - by encouraging risky overtaking, say - you can be booked. 7. Reflective number plates can beat speed cameras The myth says that a certain type of reflective number plate is impossible to photograph, enabling offenders to avoid speed camera photos. Tests have shown that no known number plate can do such a thing. 8.
