• Can bacteria grow in fuel with 2.5% biofuel? 10 May 2008 (Forum)
  It poses a serious threat. Unless tanks are thoroughly cleansed you will find strange jellyfish-like objects in the fuel.? Is there any truth in this?

  My fuel pump has packed in (£105 to get recovered off the motorway - ouch!!) The car was a good runner previously sailing through the MOT every year so I am reluctant to scrap it. How big a job is it to change the fuel pump (mechanical drive - not electric), and the cam belt at the same time, as I can't get any mechanics to change the pump with a second hand scrap yard one?

  Hi, The fuel tank door on my Mondeo is broken. Basically, a small piece of plastic (it's the bit that should act as the door catch) has snapped , which prevents the door staying closed. Blu Tac has temporarily rescued me, but it's not very pretty and not much of a deterent to fuel thieves!

  At work we have a machine with a 360 hp Cat C9 (8.8 litre) and it works at between 94-100% for 12 hours at a time and consumes about 10 gallons each hour at this loading. So it has just over half the power and uses a 6th of the fuel. What gives? So why does the Merc SLR use so much fuel (assuming my maths is correct and JC's figure are accurate)? What is the specific fuel consumption of a typical car? 210g/kw/hr ish? How much does unleaded weigh?

  i have tried removing the solonoid spring and bullet, makes no difference. tried putting pipe from, pump directly into fuel container, still the same. checked power to heater plugs and made sure plugs ok. its fuel starvation because there is no fuel comming out of injector pipes when loosened, i think its the lift pump, intermitently not drawing fuel up, going to try an inline bulb pump.

  It would be fine for a couple of weeks (he does 30 miles daily 'round trip to work), then suddenly stop at low revs and refuse to start again for several minutes. After visit from auto-electrics guy, who ruled out electrical problem, we guessed it may be fuel starvation and as experienced on a previous car, fitted a push in temporary fuel cap as a "quick fix". Car has been fine ever since, which we assume means fuel tank breather is blocked causing vacuum.

  Obviously an Auto will normally have a slightly higher fuel consumption than a manual, but not of this magnitude. Has anyone got a technical explanation?

  Last year i was getting 58mpg on my clio but the MPG dropped massively to 50mpg and even after a minor service in January , The MPG  didn't improve, So i booked the car into ATS for a Major service last month which included adding Techron D Concentrated Diesel Fuel System Cleaner which i would imagine into the fuel tank. After a few days and a run on the motorway, I am now getting the 58 MPG so i would imagine that the Cheap fuel that i buy from Esso isn't all that clean. " I have a Card for Esso" ATS is selling Techron D Concentrated Diesel Fuel System Cleaner at £32 a shot with a ebay seller selling at £15 a shot, I just wonder if how this competes against Red X and other engine cleaners, Its certainly cleaned out my engine and it maybe worth buying a couple of bottles  I may give the ESSO synergy supreme a try the next time i fill up.

  Driving back from Cornwall 2nd August, I stopped at a petrol station to fill up, paid and have a receipt for £40. Last week I got a Drive Off Notice From VARS for £16.99 of fuel (total penalty charge £46.99 in there admin fee to be paid in 14 days). I immediately appealed and provided a copy of my receipt. Today I received an email from VARS... "We are aware that payment of £40.01 was made on the date, the staff informed us that due to a pump mix-up, the wrong amount was paid for, and the driver actually dispensed £57 worth of fuel, therefore, the remaining fuel balance is £16.99.

  If I persist with the light on, she cuts out, dripping with fuel (this has happened 3 times, in the 2 weeks I have owned the little darling).    But then  restarts without any difficulty.  If I quickly back off throttle so light goes out, she does not cut out, but I then pulled into layby with engine running - LOADS of fuel dripping from 3 / 4 places.

  I had four new tyres over a year ago the offside front tyre wore out rapidly and had to be replaced. We have had the tracking done numerous times to try and correct the cars thirst for tyres and fuel but it has never really been right. I beileve the tracking and tyres are now fine but the fuel consumption is not. Most annoying the fuel consumption is not very good, across all types of driving, short distances to long motorway runs it has never achieved better than 300miles per tank.

  I have so far released the fuel pipe on the in side of the filter(rhside of filter). have cranked engine and no fuel from this pipe, I have inserted a tube into the fuel pipe and sucked through fuel so no blockage there. Have checked all fuses, but don't know about relays.

  I have a 2002 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 diesel with 83000 miles. Last October my garage replaced fuel injectors 1 and 2 and the copper seals. 2 weeks later the EGR pipe came loose. In January a bolt sheared and fuel injector 3 dropped onto the road (literally). In April injector 4 blew its rubber O-ring twice in 3 days.

  Hi all, I have a problem with my vauxhall movano. mileage 67000 My van has just had work done to the gearbox, new clutch assembly, new slave cylinder. new master cylinder & new gearbox bearings. on replacing all components i started to turn van over & it started only for about 5 seconds & died, tried again a few times but would not fire. sprayed some easy start into air assembly & it started. Checked seals to diesel filter all fine, fuel filter has just been replaced checked for problems it to was fine, disconnected hose from fuel filter to diesel injection pump & turned van over to check for fuel, this to was working so pump in tank working. disconnected fuel union nut at fuel accumulator turned van over but no fuel delivery, could this mean injection pump goosed or is there something else i might have missed before i change pump as its not cheap.

  and I wondered if the ECU would stop the engine when the computer thought the fuel was about to run out. When I started the car the next day, the low fuel light was still on and computer showing only about 25 miles - 10 miles later, I noticed that the light gone and the available range was 720 miles.

  So, is this is a clear sign of fuel pump failure, or there something I?m missing? (by no means a mechanic !!) Only thing I can think is that when I?ve been removing pipes etc, it is no longer a complete vacuum? would this stop fuel being pumped along with ignition???

  The cylinder remains clean - doesn?t get carboned up. Exchange your used up tank at a refuelling station, and the spent fuel can be regenerated by heating it in the presence of hydrogen. It can then be reused. The article suggests that scrap cars can be the fuel for the next generation. As far as having a hydrogen fuelled engine, think what would be safer in a rear end shunt, a pressure vessel full of hydrogen or a tank full of iron ?

  My fuel flap shuts but doesn't lock. The small plunger/cylinder thing pushes in and out fine, but i can't get the flap to lock no matter how hard i push, please help?

  Speedo has been checked and is not faulty, but one week and 3 electricians later none have been able to resolve why speedo, fuel and temp guages aren't working. Has anyone had the same problem or can make suggestions please.
