  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 99 2.0 Oil Warning 30 Dec 2009 (Forum)
In the centre dash screen, a warning message comes on intermittently, advising that the engine is low on oil. Using the dipstick, it comes up full. Would I be right in thinking a sensor might be misbehaving. If I do an oil & filter change the warning disappears for a few months. The car does a mix of urban and long distance work.
  • Correct gear oil for Renaults? 4 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I want to change the gear oil on my wife's Kangoo ( doggie waggon) at about 30k to ensue maximum life but am uncertain about what to put in. Renault specify only Elf TRJ 75-80 for gearboxes with brass snychro rings.
  • oil sludge etc. 6 Nov 2005 (Forum)
An American article on engine sludge, Power flushing etc. http://www.andrewsofprinceton.com/shared/nines/002.cfm I know oil change intervals vary by operating conditions but once again I note the often recommended US period is much shorter than our 6K /6 months. from the link.... "Most professionals in the auto-repair industry would suggest 3-5,000 miles regardless of the type of oil used and not go more than 4 months regardless of miles."
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 2004 1.3 CDTi Oil Light Flashing 6 Nov 2008 (Forum)

  • VW Polo 1.2 E petrol - VW Polo 52 sooting up one cylinder 23 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I read about the cam chain slipping being a common fault, linked with the oil. Could this cause it to burn oil and misfire?  The previous owner was not a careful driver and may never have checked the oil as she relied on her mechanic uncle who serviced it once a year :( It has run for another year with me topping up the oil and changing the spark plugs only once and passing it's MOT.
  • Porsche Boxster 986 + Boxster S (1996 - 2004) - 02 2.7 Tiptronic Main Oil Seal 24 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Appreciate that this is a 7 year old car but I would have thought a Porsche should be able to make or source an oil seal so not have to have its gear box removed every four years or so to change. Not sure whether to let the Porsche dealer change the seal again or ask about another good will gesture or trust it to a specalist repairer, but I am not sure who they are.
  • Omega pollen filter.. 20 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Also when replacing it be sure to clean the drainage flap in the plastic housing below, it can get full of gunge and aggrevates damp. Also had the "Kwik Fit" Mobil 1 oil & filter change, absolute bargain considering that 5 Litres of Mobil 1 in Tesco's is £30! Car is running much smoother and quieter with it (surprisingly) though I recommend watching kwik fitters whilst they do the job, it took 3 men to change the oil on my omega and even then, they didn't mop up the old oil spilled in the plastic cowling underneath the oil filter (which left a bit of a mess for me to clean up).
  • MAZDA 323F - MAZDA 323F SOUNDS LIKE A DIESEL 15 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Great little car however recently there has been a strange loud tapping like noise coming from the main engine block. I have had many different opinions of what it could be: 'The oil needs changed' or one of the valves could be blocked . Basically the car sounds like a Diesel, although the car still drives ok, the water and temp are fine, the oil is still at the right level etc...however i hace been told it may be the type of oil in the car that is the problem, I am going to change the oil this weekend and see if it makes any difference, but thought I would ask on here first just in case anyone knows of any known issues or similar issues with mazda's or 323's?
  • 2.0 zetec mk1 auto - Focus burning oil smell 28 Dec 2012 (Forum)
My zetec mk1 has a strange misty smoking burning smell coming from the right hand side of the engine near the pcv valve. I have changed the rocker cover gasket, changed the sump as it was badly corroded and replaced new oil. Im pulling my hair out as i cant pin point where its comming from. There is a misty burning smell, oil is dripping onto the exhaust and then its burning up through the exhaust and thats when you see smoke comming from the front right of the engine.
  • Daewoo Lanos 1.4 8v - Fitting hydraulic lifters 12 Aug 2011 (Forum)
--[endif]--> Got a ticking noise on my 1998 Daewoo Lanos 1.4 8v (similar to the old Astra engines).   Before the oil change the ticking was only present during initial start-up from cold and went away.   Did an oil & filter change using carlube 5-30w fully synth long life oil (on offer at wilko’s) but since then the ticking does not go away even after a good long run and increases with engine revs.
  • Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007) - 04 1.2 Oil light 18 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Wifey took her car to work this cold morning, phones me and says it is flashing 'OIL' on the dash. She gets home and it is still flashing and beneath the odometer it also flashes a number of miles, initially saying 50. I check the oil level and it seems fine, I add a little bit of oil and it is still flashing, the figure has changed to 68.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2005 - ) - 07 2.0 Wrong oil used-What shall i do? 29 Jul 2009 (Forum)

  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1996 1.8 Oil Over fill - problem 2 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Recently I have had sever thick white smoke out of my exhaust (like a Gary Numan concert) ! ! - After some consideration I realised I'd over filled my oil by about 1.5 Quarts. which caused much pressure in the crank forcing oil up and past the pistern rings, I've drained and change oil to fix this fault the engine appers to run just fine again.
  • Low viscosity oils, older cars, fuel saving 1970`s 6 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Point of interest to me is the cars of the era would have had their rings and plain bearings set for a thicker oil. Did you ever try these oils out and what was the result?
  • Any VAG PD : non-PD specific oil in a PD 6 May 2008 (Forum)
If you ran a PD engine on regular oil( say 505.0 spec) instead of 505.1, what would be the outcome? I'm not suggesting just one oil change, but over 50K - 100K miles. What would wear, and what would be the repair / rebuild costs? NB.
  • oil warning lamp on 99 Polo 1.4 auto 24 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I've had my polo 1.4CL auto (1999) for two years and no problems - regular servicing/oil changes etc. This morning the engine spluttered while starting, coughed and died, and the oil warning lamp and buzzer went off. I tried again - same thing. I got it onto the flat and checked the oil, which was fine.
  • Which oil treatment/additive is best? 23 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Hi - I have a 1996 Peugeot 306 non-turbo diesel with low mileage and I'd like to treat it well... Is it worth adding an oil treatment when I change my oil (which i do every 6 months)? If so, which ones are good? It must be hard to prove, but I'm open to anecdotal evidence from you lot.... Ever seen the little oiled cogs on the counter at your local parts supplier?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 Engine oil level 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
My engine oil was changed yesterday but its about 4mm above the max mark. It was 8mm above but I drained some out today though its still 4mm above. Does this matter? I've driven it a few miles and there don't appear to be any problems.

  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - 00 1.8 Notchy gear change when hot 7 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The car was due a new clutch (or so we thought) and the garage warned us we'd probably need a new flywheel too. Both were fitted and made a 10% improvement but the basic problem remains. Gearbox oil? I'm getting them to check it but it should have been changed when they did the clutch, right?? They charged me for the oil anyway! Any other ideas or similar problems? Thanks
