  British classics dominated day one of the Silverstone Auctions NEC Classic Motor Show sale, raising more than £500,000 as bidders jostled to buy historic Aston Martins, Jaguars and Minis. The car of the day was superb 1994 Jaguar XJ220, which raised a fitting £220,000. The right-hand drive supercar was formerly owned by the Brunei Royal Family who placed the factory order in 1991. The car has covered just 6000 miles.

  The 1995 Mercedes Benz 500 SL has been generously donated to Cancer Research UK by a supporter and is being sold by BCA with all the proceeds going to the charity. The car is finished in silver, with blue leather trim and blue canvas power-hood. It is equipped with the optional wind deflector as well as the usual SL refinements. This one-owner car has covered less than 10,000 miles and must be one of the lowest mileage examples anywhere in the UK.

  No stranger to publicity, Best and his new acquisition were photographed by the Daily Mirror in the showrooms of Ian Anthony Car Sales on 4 December, 1972. The car has sported various registration numbers over the past 44 years but on that occasion wore plates advertising the Now repainted since belonging to Best, the luxury saloon has also gained a black vinyl roof covering and later-style integral reversing lamps.
