  • MGB - MGB (Modified) way down on power 1 Dec 2022 (Forum)
Got a ‘68 MGB that I bought with a 1950 Oselli engine that has been dry stored for a few years. I’m struggling to get it running well. It has been extensively recommissioned with a new stage 2 head, Weber, and 123 distributor. Sent it in to be set up on the rolling road and is way down on power - 65hp at flywheel. Compression is very good.

  • Ford Focus Estate - Advice on engine size for Ford Focus Estate 25 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Hi all, I’ve placed an order for a new Ford Focus Estate, I went for the 1.0 MHEV 125ps engine. I’m going to be using this mostly for driving round town, school runs etc that’s why I went for that engine. But occasionally we’ll be doing long trips for family holidays. This will consist of 2 adults, children, prams, fully laden roofbox and a golden retriever in the boot.
  • Hyundai I10 or Skoda CitiGo 8 Sep 2021 (Forum)
This is from a main dealer, which is where she will buy the car from Anyone know what justifies this premium for the Skoda, and does anyone have views about the merits or otherwise of such cars for a newish driver who needs reliability, easy to drive and park, cheap running costs, and avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention regarding catalysts converters (the current one was hacked off whilst parked in the street at work - despite it being a 20 year old car)
  • Toyota Yaris 1.0 2002 - Misfiring 10 Aug 2021 (Forum)
After I cleared the codes, it would shut down the engine straight after starting, but today I revved it a bit and it managed to run on idle for a bit, still sounding funny. This is accompanied by strong smell of petrol. At this stage I am reluctant to pay to get it fixed due to agem but in case it's something obvious or cheap, I may still do it.
  • Ford Focus zetec 1.6 tdc 59 plate - Focus Rough idle when warm 29 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Hi my 59 plate focus has a rough idle when it's been driven a for 20 - 30 minutes, it's fine on start up, it drive fines no hesitation but when it comes to a stop it idles rough, I Googled it and read that it could be the MAF sensor  The air filter is fairly new and I've changed the MAF yesterday and took it for a 10 minute spin to get it warm and it seemed fine. but this morning when I got to work 30 minutes away it was idling rough again, (how I know its after a 20 - 30 minute run)  Any help appreciated,  Thanks in Advance

He was a mechanic by trade and so everything has been kept to the highest standard, though the car hasn't run for approx 10 years but has been kept inside a garage through this period. Would anyone be able to offer some advice on the best place to try and find a good home for the car? The car is located in Farnham Common, SL2.
  • Ford Transit Custom - Bought via auction without V5 unable to Tax & MOT 7 Jun 2021 (Forum)
So my questions are - 1 - do I need to wait 6 weeks (or longer during covid) for the V62 postal application to DVLA for a log book to run it course or is there a more efficient way for this to happen. 2 - the van will be repaired by next week - once we have the van MOT ready do we have to do anything more than MOT it and Tax it to get it back on the road thanks in advance

  • Any - E10 petrol - from September 25 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Our household has two auto petrol Honda's, one from 2008 (FR-V 1.8) and one from 2003 (Element 2.4 import). Both have been faultless running on a mixture of E5 and V-Power (more V-Power than E5 generally).  The Gov website advises that both cars will accept E10 without issue, which will be cheaper to buy,  So why am I not interested in changing fuels on two cars which have been totally reliable for years on end.

  • First EV servive station 13 Dec 2020 (Forum)
Its aim is to fast charge EVs in about 20 mins while owners shop or use other facilities while they are waiting.  The company operating the system also runs a solar farm some 40 miles away.  Presumably they are selling electric to the grid and then buying back electric for its service station(s). I expect  the company and its customers are laughing at the moment with the price of electric with no fuel duty or VAT  How long can this be sustainable and what disadvantages to the tax payer and ICE motorists.
  • SEAT Leon - 'Can we not go through insurance?' after bump? 22 Oct 2020 (Forum)
The woman in question wants to avoid going through her insurance (she looked about 20 on a 20 plate car) so I'm guessing she want's to avoid the excess and having her insurance increase in cost. She admitted responsibility. Is there any way we can do this without running the risk that she backs out of paying for the repairs to my wifes car? What would the backroomers do in this situation?   thanks in advance
  • Audi A3 - Radio will not work? 20 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I believe the previous owner had fitted an aftermarket radio at a stage as when removed I noticed a lot of extra wires with various plugs/aux and even a wire running over to the fuse box inside? On the back of the original radio it still has the correct multiplug style fitting, when I ran a scan using VCDS it said "Radio - Status: Cannot be reached". I have also replaced the fuse on the back of radio but no different.

  • Private Sales - COVID-19 6 Jul 2020 (Forum)
We are looking to sell a used car privately in Scotland and I'm wondering what people are doing with regard to advertising and test drives. We initially said no test drives in the ads, but we would demonstrate the car running and could video a drive but we've had little interest even at a decent price. Clearly we cant accompany someone on a test drive with either party driving and keep social distancing in place.

  • Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 01-02-2020 Part 2 7 Feb 2020 (Forum)
I'd imagine that it's also safer if the car is FWD so that the power delivery is more balanced, though I wouldn't like to say what the effect is on the rear handling when cornering (especially on wet roundabouts) or if the car is RWD/4WD, perhaps the latter not allowing them and only run-flats.
