  • rover 414 starting problem 26 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 1994 Rover 414si, K-series engine, problem is when engine is warm and left for 10 mins. Takes along time before eventually it will start and runs again. No cold staring problems usually starts first time and runs great! Any advice would be much appreciated. Regards, Ian
  • Air Filter Change Intervals 13 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Some manufacturers (BMW for one) are now talking 60k intervals for air filter changes, which to me seems grossly excessive if the engine is to run at maximum efficiency. I personally feel that 20k intervals would ensure the engine is running close to it`s designed optimum and wondered what policy B.R`s adopt.????
  • Range Rover Classic 4.2LSE 18 Aug 2004 (Forum)
My Rangie runs on LPG and petrol. Does anyone know if at MOT time the emissions are tested with the engine running on petrol or gas? If gas, can I get away with fitting an exhaust pipe minus the cats? I intend to fit tubular headers with lambda fittings.

  • Toy Run - Marvellous policing!! 10 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The Growler mentioned in an earlier thread that he was off on a motorbike Toy Run, to help underpriveleged kiddies. Well, they did that here.... Cape Town's traffic department has admitted that it treated the premier motorcycle charity event of the year as a cash cow. Officers of its technical section set up a speed trap on the morning of December 1 specifically to target riders heading for the annual Charity Toy Run, which begins at Ottery Hypermarket.
  • BMW 523i E39 - What stopped my car?! 5 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help! On Saturday, my 2000 year 523i suddenly died on the motorway. It was like it had run out of fuel. AA diagnosed fuel pump as no fuel at rail and it was recovered back. New pump arrived today and fitted. Car wouldn't start, seemed to be no power at pump. removed the relay in the boot and tried jumping + to gnd but no pump running.
  • Vw tdi - 1.9 tdi rough running very lumpy? 3 Jan 2022 (Forum)
It has 65k miles. It does not have any fault codes or warning lights on the dash. It starts perfect but runs very rough and lumpy, will not idle at a constant rpm. When driving it feels like it is down in power. The car seems to be fairly well looked after with full service history but as it was a trade in to a main dealer I don’t know much more.
  • Astra mk6 1.4T 140 - Octane Requirement 16 Nov 2020 (Forum)
The manual says 95 octane recommended, 91 and 98 possible. I'm struggling to think why it wouldn't run better on 98 (or other higher octane fuel). Yes, it's possibly mapped for 95 but with 200Nm at 1850rpm that's a lot more stress/compression (almost double) compared to its naturally aspirated equivalent which is also recommended to run on 95.
  • Peugeot 206 2005 1.1 petrol - Engine running temp & pedal Sensor 13 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Two queries: The above car runs at 80deg C which I thought was low, just wondering if this is normal for this car. I wasnt able to connect to live data on my Memoscan U585 generic code reader to check temps. Previously at last service I think I could access this live data!!!
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace 1.6 VTi Petrol - Cooling system problems 24 Sep 2014 (Forum)
The temperature gauge inmy 2013 Multispace, whilst on a run, suddenly went off the top of the scale and a stop warning came on. I stopped and checked under the bonnet and nothing indicated  overheating, the fans were running but nothing was too hot. The car went in for a warranty repair and a temperature sensor was replaced.
  • need a small run around pool car 14 Nov 2013 (Forum)
In one of my my business incarnations I run a lettings agency. The manager drives a Mini, but that will soon depart and we need to source a less expensive pool car which will be used not only for her but other staff to go out to doing inspections etc.
  • Jaguar XF - an indicated 34mpg from a 3L petrol.... 17 Aug 2013 (Forum)
This compares with 32mpg earlier in the week on a trip from a return trip to Lancs - > Cambridge. The Mazda 6 2L petrol I owned previously would only do about 38mpg on a run. I shall update the 'real-life' mpg. Who says big petrol engines are expensive to run (if you ignore the £465/yr road tax...) ? Stu

  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta - Running costs 19 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I know that car manufacturers arrange very extreme conditions when they are calculating running costs for their new cars but I am really fed up with the consumption on my new multiair 1450 Guilietta! One of my main reasons to buy this beautiful car was to have fun as well as a sensible consumption. The best I can get on combined , really steady driving in calm conditions on fairly empty road, with me alone in the car is 30.2mpg!
  • Peugeot 306 LX 1.4 petrol - Fuel pump noise 28 Oct 2012 (Forum)
During the last few days we have become aware of our fuel pump. I am not sure if it has got louder or if it should be cutting out. It runs momentarily prior to the engine starting but once started it appears to run continuously. Is this normal? It is most noticeable during idle. The car appears to function OK but we are concerned about the the extra noise and if it is indicative of a serious problem.
  • Peugeot 405 1.9TD 1995 XUD9 TE/L - Should I use original or an equivilent. 8 Sep 2012 (Forum)
I have renewed the leakoff pipes, and when she is running pulls like a train. Has 185,000 on the clock, so just run in..... I was told that these engines perform best with original Peugeot filters only, the replacements I used were NOT could this be a fact , or just fiction.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso - Is it time to replace my Picasso? 29 Aug 2012 (Forum)
It runs OK but it's starting to show signs of age - cutting out after starting occasionally, even less power than it used to have. I'm worried it might be about to enter a period of expensive failures. But it's been a very reliable machine and the total cost of owning and running it has been really low.
  • Seat Ibiza 1.4 SE - ECU control during "running in" period. 2 Jun 2011 (Forum)
The Polo felt very flexible and long-legged, easily sailing up hills often in 5th gear, but the Ibiza is sometimes down to 3rd gear for same uphill speed. I just wonder if the ECU is programmed with a "running in" algorithm so that the engine never  labours in too high a gear for the first 1000 miles or so after which it will become easier to drive. Anyone else had similar experience?
  • Peugeot 306 HDi - Bizarre starting problem with 306 HDi 12 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Bit of a strange one this so I am hoping someone might be able to shed some light on it I have a 306 HDi that at face value wont start, if however I feed a static 12v feed to the pump which at the moment is via the cigar lighter socket it starts and runs perfectly everytime and whilst running I have voltage at the plug for the pump But if I put the plug back into the pump it turns over but wont start which doesnt seem to make much sense Could this be something as silly as the seal between the LP pump and the fuel tank letting air in, and running the pump constantly via the cigar lighter socket prior to ignition is compensating in some way for the poor seal?
  • Ford Mondeo diesel - knocking from engine on start up from cold 22 Sep 2010 (Forum)
hi, i have a 1998 mondeo diesel, it has been very reliable and has covered 126000 miles. recently it has developed a loud knocking/clattering noise from the engine when starting from cold . when i press the accelerator there is no response for about a second and then the engine will run as normal. when coming off the revs and when it settles into tickover the knocking will come back, but as the engine warms up the noise will gradually quieten down and disappear. the car will then run fine throughout the day, and when left for a few hours will continue to start and run fine with no problems. the knocking only happens when left for several hours, or overnight.
