  Beautiful fit & finish, especially in the cabin, whith nice plastics and a very 'German' ambience. I've owned two Corollas before (a s/hand F reg 1.6 exec hatch - nice, and a K reg saloon - bland and boring, but both totally reliable) and I must say this one looks like a cracker. The T-Sport with its 190bhp ex Celica engine might be good..........

  An interesting article in today?s Telegraph when ?Motormouth?(Mike Rutherford) resisted the advances of high powered Ford PR men and wrote a pretty damning article on the new Fiesta. Admittedly a subjective view, but there seems to be a correlation between the amount of advertising manufacturers place in newspapers and the level of praise a new model gets given by the motoring correspondent.

  In an unrelated thread last week, a comment about manufacturers adding new bits just to make us change to a new model caught my eye. Yes, yes. So, let's hear it........... Which new modification(s) in recent years have been wholly superfluous ... or worse, just a darned nuisance? I'll start the ball rolling with infuriating electric windows which I find I always need to wind down justt after I've switched off.

  My cousin runs his early 70's {no road tax} land rover diesel on used engine oil collected by his mate at the local waste disposal site. Uses proper diesel too sometimes. Bad for the environment, but good for his pocket? It tends to run on a bit though, and a little messy filtering the old oil too.

  I drops to around 1200 to 1500 rpm and with an automatic box this is a problem because the car wants to travel at 30mph on its own. The Vauxhall dealer has had three attempts to rectifiy this problem and it;s still there. I am aware of another (manual) Omege with the same problem.

  The fact is that in the wrong application a high viscosity oil can be just as damaging as using a low viscosity oil. The use of an oil that?s too ?thin? can cause metal-to-metal contact, poor sealing and increased oil consumption and conversely, an oil that?s too ?thick? can cause increased friction, reduced energy efficiency, higher operating temperatures, and poor cold starts in cold temperatures.

  I am in my 80’s and run an ageing Honda Jazz iShift. Goes very well, but is now 14 years old. My wife drives the car mainly to visit nearby friends all within five mike radius. I use it for getting to a couple of social clubs I belong to.

Where has simple good design gone to? Mazda seem to get it right, although the 3's C-pillar is on the slab/van thickness side.

   I have studied the manual but there are so many things to get used to. It drives very nicely and  does mid 40's to a gallon, very comfortable and easy to see out of which wasn't the case with the slk. Had a major service from the main dealers before I got it but after the warranty year runs out it will my trusted indie looking after it.

  Yesterday I removed the TR7's cam cover and spent much of the sunny afternoon removing the carbon deposited on the inside surface from the breather pipe.  Last time it was removed was in 1987 at 41,100 miles to check the valve clearances.
