"Economy" settings 23 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Punto 1.2 ELX Speedgear has an economy setting, at which engine revs are limited to 4000. Over two recent 1000-mile runs under similar driving conditions - with not much time in town or on dual carriageways - 44.3 m.p.g. registered on the trip computer, for an average of 28.7 m.p.h. The ordinary setting gave 44 m.p.h. for 31.8 m.p.h. -
MB W124 plenum float 27 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Some time ago my 230TE backfired and would start but not run, I managed to find a mechanic who fixed this fault for an outstanding 40 quid... It's done it again and my clever mb man has gone to greener fields..however he said it was caused by a float in the plenum chamber becoming stuck as a result of the backfire...now I'm quite clever mechanically, but I don't know where to look and my library doesn't have any manuals later than '84. -
air/con new theory 14 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Until one "veteran" member stated that this was true of old systems using R12 gas, but the new systems use R134a and have polyalkylene glycol as the lubricant, a different elastomeric seal material that does not swell and, therefore, it is not necessary to occasionally run R134a systems to prevent leaks. Can any air/con experts confirm the theory? -
Renault Laguna Auto 4 Jul 2001 (Forum)
For a few months I've had a problem with it "holding" low gear when cold, but today it went to "3" on the Motorway and stayed there for 40 miles all the way home. Running it later when cold, it's doing the same thing. I've obviously a serious problem. Honest John's Car-by-Car breakdown gave me no comfort with it's diagnosis of problems with these autos. Before I shell out several hundred for a rebuild, has anyone suffered the same fault? -
Oops! Wrong fuel!!! 17 Jun 2001 (Forum)
After eight years of running a diesel, the other night I done the inevitable and started filling up with unleaded. Fortunately I noticed almost straight away, and only put 2.7 litres in. A phonecall to the AA brought the assurance that this would not do any harm in a full tank, so I brimmed it, gave the car a good shake to mix it in, crossed my fingers, turned the key and the nice man was proved right. -
Forte Diesel Fuel conditioner OK 1 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Before Forte Average emission test 3.29m-1 (Fail as limit 2.5) After Forte and 15 mile full throttle run Average 1.21m-1. Oh joy! (Did try other brand Injector cleaner from Halfords before in the tank but did not help) Wonder if the secret to get quick results was putting the fuel additive in the Fuel filter? -
VW Golf Diesel Cam Belt - COST! 11 May 2001 (Forum)
Total bill £630 of which 4 hours (at £65) just for the cam belt plus parts of almost £100 again just for the cam belt. They sell you on the good fuel consumption but forget to tell you of the ridiculous running costs. How can a cam belt on a modern engine really take 4 hours? Any ideas? -
Subaru Impreza II WRX (2000 - 2005) - Hit and Run 26 Feb 2009 (Forum)
This is now passed onto Collisions Unit who work Monday to Friday. Did a ASKMID and vehicle is not listed as being insured. Given Idiot runs a motor trade business, i suspect that's fleet insurance or something. Let's give the benefit of the doubt for now. Do a Company House search on business and identify Idiot's proper name and address. -
Advice Needed: New Insurance and NCB Woes 14 Jun 2025 (Forum)
The issue comes when I apply for insurance. My current insurance ends early next month. My license runs out at the end of the month. Do I have to declare this with the insurers? I have already sent off my DVLA renewal application a few weeks ago. No doubt, I’m going to have to do a DVLA medical. -
Live within your means 19 Oct 2023 (Forum)
Set your sights on what your budget can reliably provide and buy a simple normally asperated petrol engined mass produced car that you'll realistically be able to afford to run. Above all keep it simple... -
Toyota Aygo - Fuel lines make strange noise over 90 km/h 15 Jul 2021 (Forum)
So I went to a normal Toyota dealer at about 10 AM this morning and they went for a test drive and at around 11:30 AM, after 1 and a half hours they sent me to the main dealer since they had replaced the back bumper earlier this year and they thought it was the bumper. Got there at about 12:15, and went on a test run after we got back and they did a lot of careful inspection they finally figured out it was the fuel lines touching the car body. It was not obvious, the lines were on their original plastic fixing supports, all it took was pulling on them by hand (away from the car body) and going for another test run and the sound was no more. -
How far safety has moved on 14 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I’ve been looking for a particular copy of What Car magazine for a while dating from 1990 and I’ve finally obtained it through EBay. It’s the first privately run multi car crash test run by the European motoring press and it shocked the public and pressured the car manufacturers into action. It pretty much instigated the big safety push of the 1990’s which saved countless lives. -
Ford Focus Estate 2009 1.6TDCi 110, 120k miles - Focus 1.6TDCi Power loss 9 Dec 2019 (Forum)
This can be anything from a small but noticeable blip when using cruise control at 70mph on the motorway, to a more noticeable drop when accelerating, which is similar to tapping the brakes. At it's worst, under heavy acceleration, the engine loses all power and refuses to run. Fortunately if this happens if I turn the ignition off and restart the engine, then it runs as it did before, although the problem is still there. It is possibly worse when the engine is cold, but I would say much more related to amount of acceleration, regardless of speed or gear. -
Mk1 Ford Focus - Ford Focus starting issues 4 Dec 2019 (Forum)
They didnt and told me it could be an intermittent sticking injector, as for the time it was in the garage it would start and run fine. I suspect it was left inside the garage for the few days it was in, sheltered from the cold. They suggested adding some fuel cleaner and running it for a week or so and repeating. The next day it struggled to start as per, so i booked it in to have the glow plugs changed. -
Mazda 3 1.6 tdi - At a loss as to what to do now! 22 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I have a 1.6d Mazda 3 2007 it has an intermittent problem where it will cut out (revs drop and nothing I do will stop the car from stalling) and then the car sometimes will not want to restart, other times it will restart on first turn of the key, it could be when I am idling, driving, changing gear, accelerating, breaking, there is no correlation that I can find. The car will run fine for days, weeks or maybe just hours before this problem happens. I have had diagnostics run on the car with an independent garage using Mazda software which showed nothing, no current faults and no pending faults, the guy said the only fault he could see anywhere was an old fault on the system for the throttle positioning sensor but that it was in the history and not showing as active(he also cleared it just incase it was causing some random problem by being stored there). -

In the reply to the 'Superman' comment, the part that says "Quite a lot of Volvo owners are coming very unstuck from trying to run their Volvo diesels on anything else" is not correct. The EGR / EGR cooler fault with the Volvo D4 modular diesel engine is well-documented and is a fundamental design fault from the factory, compounded by inadequate pre-launch testing. -
Peugeot 106 1.5d 95' TUD5 Rev Hunts, slower starting, performance down Timing? 17 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Now fixed but since this the engine is slower to start (still less than 1.5 seconds but used to be split second) and sometimes the rev's hunt up and down. Seems little or now pattern to this ... hot, cold, start up, running ... is just every now and again. When engine running, there is definitely a fractional lull in performance now and then. For example, going up to Screwfix just, I slowed at a junction and pulled away in third accidentally (not a good idea I know) but it definitely confirmed the lull in engine performance ... not the gear itself but you could see and hear the rev's drop a bit. -
Vauxhall Vivaro - Smoking/misfire/rough under load 5 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Also my understanding was on common rail diesels the glow plug continued to function whilst engine running to aid combustion, but Haynes says only used while coolant temp is under 20 degrees? So not sure if in the absence of any other codes that it could be something to do with this side of things? -
