Peugeot 106 1.5d 95' TUD5 Rev Hunts, slower starting, performance down Timing? - mkultra

Morning all.

Posted the other week re air / fuel leak causing cut out. Turned out to be leaky fuel filter/pipe. Now fixed. Thanks to all helping on that one.

Now fixed but since this the engine is slower to start (still less than 1.5 seconds but used to be split second) and sometimes the rev's hunt up and down. Seems little or now pattern to this ... hot, cold, start up, running ... is just every now and again.

When engine running, there is definitely a fractional lull in performance now and then. For example, going up to Screwfix just, I slowed at a junction and pulled away in third accidentally (not a good idea I know) but it definitely confirmed the lull in engine performance ... not the gear itself but you could see and hear the rev's drop a bit.

Question is ... is this a timing issue? And if it is what to do?

Just to note, engine is high miles but carefully used and maintained ... never missed a beat. Uses synthetic oil, always serviced. Had water pump replaced 18 month ago by garage ... (not failed, just prevention). Timing belt and set up was done maybe 8 years back by decent garage. Diesel pump was replaced at same time with a decent refurbished unit done by decent folk. Absolutely zero smoke and always passes emissions.

Would the hunting and power lulls likely be timing? Keen to hear any ideas on that. As I say it ran like a sewing machine for years and years until this air leak.

Thanks in advance

There is a small margin of adjustment of the pump timing , but I think this unlikely to be the issue . If the engine is hunting , then I suspect you may still have air entering the fuel system. You may want to check the injector spill return pipes . They may not be leaking fuel , but they could be porous. These are easy and cheap to replace.

Thanks for the steer. I can see air in the clear pipe attached to the diesel pump. Sounds mad but don't know if that was there and normal beforehand or not. The things we take for granted until then become an issue! :-)

Not entirely sure what the injector spill pipes are. Is that connecting pipe across the tops on the injectors? Is it rubber rather than metal?

Going out to have a quick look now but yes 100% agree if it's a cheap replacement part and eliminates the possibility of air then absolutely fine by me. This car been turning wheels now the same age as my daughter ... 24 years and runs great ordinarily. A few replacement parts is absolutely fine by me.

Are those sort of parts still readily available?

Thanks for the suggestion.

These are the thin bore rubber pipes that link all the injectors . The pipe is pretty much universal on diesel cars of this era . Easily available.

Brilliant, yes just been looking at it ... would say these are the originals.

Curious as to how they remove. There is no obvious locking or unlocking method. Going to have a flick through the Haynes manual shortly but are they a push fit or is there a technique to remove and fit?

Thanks for the direction ... is a new area for me this side of the engine

Push fit , but if they are the originals, then you will need to cut them off.

Looking on ECP, GSF and ebay and not seeing any parts to replace.

It is a component you order as a set or a pipe that is cut to length? Not fully sure of the spec ... know of a web site that might be able to help? Or is there a name or spec of pipe to replace with?

I'm thinking on now to change all the fuel pipes to eliminate the possibility. But again not fully sure what spec of pipe to track down. is there a name or make or spec for diesel fuel pipe?

Thanks again

Loads on e bay . Look up diesel spill pipe . Order a length and cut to size . Just check internal diameter
