  • Follow on to car jacking thread 27 Nov 2001 (Forum)
UK fuel duty is there because its a travel contained within the UK situation, whereas airlines are operating an import/export business and it needs the whole world to agree on duties. My thoughts, what about domestic flights? Next time I put thick end of £50's worth of diesel in how far do you think I would get with the line that I should not pay duty am on my way to a meeting re exporting UK products and importing some wine, beer & ciggies. Really this makes my blood boil and is just typical of the lack of joined up thinking of this shower of incompetents in Government etc.
  • LPG 26 Nov 2000 (Forum)
In Honest John,s Telegraph column a correspondant was (more or less) rubbishing LPG powered cars. Here in Australia the current story is very different. Ford sells its big car, 4.0 litre six (FALCON), sedan, wagon and utility with factory fitted dedicated LPG as an option.
  • An extended test drive of a new shape Audi A6. 12 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The suspension on that car was rock hard and I hated the car because of it. From what I have read, Audi S Lines and very hard suspension go hand in hand together so I have never considered them. That and the fact most Audi’s look boring in my eyes…. Anyway, I phoned the lease company and asked for an S-Line as I wanted the worst ride possible; to really see if this car can be acceptable for a family of four and be comfortable doing 30,000 miles per year.
  • DIY Transport Policy 4 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Forget about trying to persuade people en masse to use buses instead of cars ? it won?t work, and there?s no point trying to build a transport strategy around the assumption that it will. 2. Dedicated bus lanes are pointless ? they just create a tailback which stretches beyond the point where the bus lane starts, and the buses get trapped with the rest of the traffic.
  • Suzuki swift - 2024 swift 23 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Still got a few bits of hard plastic inside but much improved over the last model, the interior was quite a nice place to sit, plenty of adjustment in the comfortable and supportive seat, controls all felt nicely weighted and the large infotainment screen, lifted from the latest S-Cross apparently,  was a doddle to navigate. The new 3 pot engine had plenty of go despite only having I think around 80 horse powers, you do get that off beat 3 cylinder "thrum" on pulling away but around town it was all but silent.
  • Electric Transit on trial 24 Mar 2024 (Forum)
My firm (a local bus and coach company) has sitting it its bank a tax payer funded grant which has to be spent on electric buses. We’ve bought two Sigma 8’s, which have proven to be a disappointment due to range and poor reliability - one has been off the road for months awaiting parts. We’ve also bought a Mercedes based minibus which has also proven to be next to useless.
  • Toyota Estima - Imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan…or something else?!? 3 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I’m in the market for a spacious (and reliable) used 7 seater with a budget of £12,500 Must haves are: petrol, auto, heated front seats, raised seating position OR comfortable drive (due to my disability), reversing camera, room for 2 teenagers in all of the rear 5 seats (so no Qashqai+2 for ex.) but also not as big as a van styled motor such as the Alphard or Berlingo Would be nice: leather/half leather trim, tray tables to back of front seats, half decent mpg After much deliberation I’ve cut it down to an imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan - around an 11 plate or newer, with less than 100k on the clock and good history (Verso is too small, XC90 worries me with repair bills, don’t fancy a Zafira, Galaxy, S Max, Grand Picasso, or Alhambra) Have I missed anything worth considering - such as an older X5? - and if not, which would be a better investment to try and get 6 or more years of well serviced motoring from??
  • Anyone bought a used tesla? 31 Dec 2023 (Forum)
I know there are more sensible options but I think the joy I'd get from the car is worth a bit of extra money and the risk of financial oblivion if the battery dies. My max budget would be £30k but I've seen older model 3's for less than 20.
  • Skoda Kamiq - Can't decide between two cars 28 Dec 2023 (Forum)
They both have good reviews, but the main dealer with 18inch wheels has probably the best reviews I've seen from a main dealer. As I'm near the top of my budget, it's not ideal for me to look at another set of 17's. Any input would be helpful, as maybe I'm getting hung up on the details.
  • Current process for Salvage car purchase? 31 Jan 2022 (Forum)
My friend has his heart set on purchasing a salvage car with light damage (I can’t recall if it’s a Cat N or cat S). The car in question does not have a log book, the company selling it told him to get a V62 and go to the post office where he can apply for the V5 and tax the car at the same time. Is this correct?
  • What would you go for? 11 Feb 2021 (Forum)
I prefer the look of the Audi but the Focus has more extras and I imagine is more comfortable for commuting as the Audi has Sport suspension (although I think this isn’t as harsh as S Line suspension?) and 19” alloys.   Are Audi massively more expensive for servicing and parts?  Paul
  • 2012 VW GOLF 2.0 TDI BLUEMOTION MATCH HATCH - Cat N purchase turns out to be Cat A or B 21 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I applied for a new V5 but have been informed by DVLA that car is Cat A or B and must be scrapped , Ive had an engineer who does crash damage repairs look over the car and he cant see any reason for a Cat A or B or even Cat S , as there are no signs of any structural damage at all .  Is there any way of getting this Category Changed , or finding out the previous owner as my friend thinks the insurance company may have wrote it off as Cat N but made a mistake in telling DVLA its Cat A or B.
  • Buyers of new cars are so dull 19 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Many of us look for colours that are either practicle for our use, silver is ideal for my use, or a shade that is considered fashionable, not only to 'fit in' which is understandable because standing out from the right on consensus of the moment isn't advisable and anyway there's always resale to think of, so something fashionable but bland is a good bet. Personally i much preferred the 70's in many ways as well as colours, ok the cars weren't great but there were lots of really interesting colours, ranging from oranges through yellows and lime green to all shades of the spectrum, almost no one had white cars, and black was for govt/drug dealers/hoods, and as i recall our own fair maidens were a delight in those better days when people didn't take themselves quite so seriously.
  • Citroen C1 - private seller vs franchise: milliage + cost 14 Aug 2019 (Forum)
I'm looking at second hand cars in the price range of £1000-2000 and it looks like I will have to choose to either have a high mileage or older car. Most of the cars I'm looking at are toyota aygo, citroen c1 or peugeot 107's (UK). What would be best between: - 2009 car 95,000 mileage £1250 (private)  - 2006 car 61,000 mileage £1700 (franchise)    - 2010 car <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->77053 mileage £2000 (franchise)   dg10mme <!

I have only used Luton once this year-Stansted is not much better ,but at least it was originally built as an airport and not a 1940's airfield. Stansted wasn't built on top of a hill either. Avoid avoid avoid
  • Toyota aygo - Vehicle recall and damages as a result of it 3 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Such as reimbursing her for damages or fixing the issues that have come about as a result of water entry. My mum hasn’t been able to pay for it as she is on a low income and is actually trying to get s new car because of the issues she has had with this one but she can’t afford it currently. Thanks all!!
  • Focus or any - Android head unit / Incar dash radio 7 Sep 2016 (Forum)
I'd also be getting a touch screen/DVD/optional reverse cam amongst other things with the android. • Old drivers killing pedestrians 26 Oct 2015 (Forum)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11270380/Driver-83-mowed-down-mother-when-he-mistook-brake-for-accelerator-in-his-classic-Mercedes.html It seems this year I've read of several fatal incidents involving old f***s mowing down innocent pedestrians in cark parks, in busy towns etc. Each time it irks me to read they all claim they are good drivers, self declared medically fit, and get away with ot by claiming a sneezing, coughing or even unexpectedly "passed out" for a couple of seconds (unfortunate timing).
  • Peugeot 207 - Peugeot 207 Warning Lights-No Speedo-Heavy Steerin 1 Jun 2015 (Forum)
He recommends taking to a Peugeot Dealer and we all know that would be financial suicide and literally at the mercy of being bent over a barrel and the chances are they wouldn't have an exact solution and it would be the start of £1,000's spend before actually finding the problem. Please can anyone help, it seems to be problem caused before amongst other readers and surely someone has eventually had the problem solved first time from a credible mechanic???
  • Volvo XC90 - running costs of a Volvo XC90 15 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Hiya, I am looking to invest in a XC90 as an upgrade to my falling apart Seat Alhambra that I currently ferry my 4 children around in.  I have 3 under 4's and I can currently fit the 3 car seats across the middle row with my teenage daughter in the front meaning I have a huge boot with the 2 extra seats  removed.  This works well for us as we do a lot of motorway miles to visit family some 200 miles away on a fairly regular basis.
