  • Golf mk4 1.9tdi 130 - Normal power delivery ? 31 Mar 2015 (Forum)
On this engine, the diesel injectors work like hypodermic needles, they are pressurised by a lobe on the camshaft which pushes the 'plunger' to atomise the fuel.  If the camshaft timing (which is adjustable) is slightly out, pressure will build up either too early, or too late.   This article describes exactly how the camshaft timing works on the PD engine, and how altering it affects driving behaviour:  http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_112521/article.html Any VW diesel specialist should be able to set it up correctly for you.
  • Road Tax 5 Mar 2015 (Forum)
So what do the BRs think will replace the current system of road taxing? Pay as you go, tax added to fuel, weight of vehicle or any other fair system for both the vehicle users and government alike. As far as I know, no party has addressed this issue ahead of the election. But what do you think will replace the current system?

  • Mercedes W124 Coupe - worth a try? 6 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Looking for some opinions. I currently have a VW Polo TDi which was bought for fuel economy for my 75 mile commute. I've changed jobs and the car now either sits ont he drive or at the airport. I'm on the lookout for something interesting that won't break the bank and will still get me to the airport on time to catch the 6.30 am shuttle to Heathrow from Edinburgh.

  • MG ZT-T td 130 - Cooling system 21 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I have a 2005 MG ZT-T td 130 from new with 69,000 miles and until the last 3,000 or so the temperature guage has always read on the middle bar on the guage for all types of driving - Howver, once warm it tends to remain on the middle bar for normal driving but at motorway cruiing speed it dips to 1 bar below and remains consistant, moving back to the middle bar and never higher when back to slow speeds. Fuel consumption remains mid to high 40's and coolant level is correct with no leaks. This would appear to be logical but why the fluctuation after this time and should I be concerned ?!
  • SAAB 9-3 Sportwagon - Used car for high mileage commuter 25 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I'm considering looking for a used Saab 9-3 1.9 diesel as my mode of transport for a 600 mile/week commute. Any opinions on the suitability of the car? The main things I'm looking for are good fuel economy, reliability over high miles and be a comfortable motorway cruiser. Other main contenders are 1.9tdi skoda octavia or 1.9d Volvo v40. Have a budget up to 5k but would be much happier spending around 3k so am expecting to be buying something which already has a fair few miles on it.
  • Ford Focus - diesel Ford Focus - mk1 or mk2 12 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Money is tight at the moment and I'm wondering if there is really any good reason not to go for a mk1 other than it being an older shape and more plasticy interior?  good fuel economy is a priority for me. how would mpg compare between a 1.8 mk1 or mk2? Any tips on things to look out for on either option?
  • frod transit 2008 - cranks but won't start 9 Feb 2014 (Forum)
No dtcs.fuel rail pressure was going to high so I put a pressure relief valve on it and suction control valve as well. (Prv wasblown).fuel pressure within tolerance now.there is a good battery and good starter motor on it.tryed crank sensor, ignition switch.all to no avail, oh and fed pump and return into can so rules out diesel running back or taking in air.thinking of sending injectors of to get cbecked now.any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Mazda 6 - Mazda 6 estate buying advice 18 Jan 2014 (Forum)
When im researching this car there are a lot of reports about the dpf clogging up and dumping loads of fuel to clear it I just wondered if these are a good reliable car? Also is servicing costs going to be expensive? I generally do a basic service myself as well as exhausts, brakes etc. Im wondering if its easy enough to reset the service interval on these cars?
  • Nissan Terrano II - Terrano - Low rev stutter 10 Jan 2014 (Forum)
My usually reliable Terrano is giving some grief, lately it has been a bit spluttery at low revs, just the odd hiccup now and then, but today it has been playing up terribly, it cit out a a junction and ran like a dog when restarted, until it hit 2000 revs and pulled away as normal, I was worried it was fuel starvation, but on the motorway it sat at a very comfortable 80 until the end of the motorway when it started the stutter thing again, when it stutters there is a burst of blue smoke, keep it above 2k and it is fine.
  • Hyundai i30 2012 onwards - 1.4 petrol - any good? 1 Nov 2013 (Forum)
The car will be used for pootling about, but a number of long (250 mile plus) trips per year three up plus luggage. Does anybody have an experience of them - are they OK to drive (underpowered at all?), fuel economy, ownership and so on? We did think of diesel, but we probably don't do the mileage to justify the £1,500 jump in cost to an equivalent diesel model. Any thoughts and views much appreciated!
  • BMW 3 Series Touring E91 - Intermittent Long Crank 30 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Car is aprox'10 months old, normally starts up from cold perfectly but every 4-5 weeks it has a habit of struggeling to start.Instead of firing up straight away the engine cranks over for about 4 seconds or so then fires up.The problems goes away but then returns like I said after 4-5 weeks.I get this problem in the middle of winter or the middle of summer so its not weather related.Have had the car in the garage once no fault found,no fault codes stored in the memory.A friend has suggested it sounds like a fuel pump problem?.
  • Zafira A Diesel 2.0 DTi - Zafira A Ticking Noise 7 Oct 2013 (Forum)
The turbo hasn't worked in a while so I think this is something different. I also found that when I filled up the other day, it took a while for it to register on the fuel gauge where normally it would show immediately. I have recently checked and topped up the oil.   I'm hoping it's nothing serious but then I've already spent a fair bit on repairs for this car!

I’ve had a new fuel pump, 4 new reconditioned injections fitted but still having problems with accelerations.   I’ve taken it to a VW dealer who had kindly informed me that the head gasket has 2 broken brakes in it which is causing the problems.
  • BMW 3 Series Touring - 4 cylinder engine. - Vacuum pump problems 13 Jul 2013 (Forum)
The main dealer where I bought the car diagnosed a leaking vacuum pump, which is apparently part of the fuel system and is located at the back of the engine. Since there is an integral gasket the whole pump had to be replaced, at a cost of several hundred pounds. The car was 6 years old. The problem has now started again after only 3 years (the warranty on replacement parts expires after 2 years).
  • Changing my car 24 Jun 2013 (Forum)
I have had my 04 Fabia 1.2 comfort for 6 trouble free years now, and have just retired and fancy getting something a little newer, another Fabia is prbably the best option but i do fancy somrthing different, looking at maybe Polo, Jazz, or Focus. Not to sure if i need a diesel or not, as long as its similar in fuel consumpton to my present car it should be ok. Lots of the hondas i look at have i shift, is this any good or is it trouble. Any advice or suggestions on suitable cars appreciated, i plan to keep the car for at least 6 years again.
