Volvo C70 - Automatic in neutral when parked up for long time? 22 Sep 2024 (Forum)
Soon to be putting my Volvo mk1 C70 auto away in the garage for autumn/winter hibernation, and I have a battery pack at the ready, though I'll be getting her out once a month to allow her to run for a good few mins. The question I have is, would it be worthwhile leaving the car in 'neutral' and with the handbrake off? The garage is very much on a flat surface. Will leaving it in neutral prevent unnecessary wear to the breaks/transmission? -
Ford Mustang questions 20 Dec 2023 (Forum)
What is the appeal of the Ford Mustang to UK buyers? How easy is it owning and running a Ford Mustang? If you are thinking of going in to Mustang ownership, which would be a good entry level Mustang to own? Which Ford Mustang do you consider to be the greatest of all time? -
Nissan Juke versus Toyota Aygo 18 Dec 2023 (Forum)
I've fallen in love with both the cars above (subject box). However, which is the cheapest to run? Are the wheels on the Juke pricier than the wheels on the Aygo, for example, if I ever needed to replace them. To me, the Juke wheels look massive. I've never had a big car before and I need something with a bigger boot too. -
Renault Kadjar - Is it good news? Have I been lucky? 22 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Engine was flushed and new turbo/intercooler/piping was replaced. 2 services later car is running fine. Do you think I've been lucky? It's a 1.6 diesel bose Signature and fully paid off now. So I owe nothing on the car. -
Vw mk6 golf 1.6 tdi - Engine cutting out 25 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Hi, my daughters vw occasionally cuts out and when she tries to start it it will turn over but won’t run. After a few minutes it will go. This has happened 2 to 3 times over the last 6 months at very awkward times. Someone has mentioned it could be a relay sticking but there are quite a few on this car, not to sure where to look. -

Honda Civic - New car questions 18 Aug 2021 (Forum)
After a brief interest in Mazda and again complete apathy from the local dealer I've decided to buy a new 1.5 Civic sport. Couple of questions as this is my first new car : Do modern cars need running in what should I avoid doing if so ? Didn't go for the paint protection and they've confirmed it's been finished off with autoglym super resin so what protection Coukd I add my self ? -
Any (Toyota?) - Cheap second car 19 Dec 2020 (Forum)
Somewhere around £2000 (or less, can't justify spending more for what would be just a 3 mile run). Would be for 2-3 years. Want to keep the cost down, so probably 0 road tax (or minimal), low insurance, minimal maintenance/service. A petrol manual. Autotrader shows: iQ, Aygo, i10, Alto (all around the 10 year mark, 100k mark). -
VW Golf MK5 - NO POWER 10 Dec 2020 (Forum)
hi, I have a MK5 Golf 1.6 fsi (BLF) that has no power. it starts and runs fine but when you accelerate it is like the handbrake is on. I have scanned the ECU and come back with a P000A fault "A" camshaft position slow response ( bank1 ). I have replaced the timing chain and tensioner, camshaft position sensor, coils, spark plugs, oil and filters, and whilst the sump was off I cleaned out the oil pickup and checked the oil pump, all to no avail. -
Is towing a car behind a motorhome safe? 17 Nov 2020 (Forum)
I worked in a recovery garage 20-odd years ago and we were told the rigid bars were only suitable for short runs - dragging a broken down car back to be repaired. Apart from anything else, the motorhome driver cannot see the towed car in his mirrors. Surely this cannot be safe? -
Challenges for Electric Vehicle Production - Can w 7 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Hey guys, I've recently written an article which looks at the current limitations of electric cars, as well as how it affects potential new buyers and whether or not it is sustainable for the entire planet to run Electric Cars at the moment. I'd love to get some thoughts from other electric car owners, and if there any potential solutions to the problems that I'm not aware of ? This is the article: (link deleted) It's a relatively quick read, and I would really appreciate any feedback or thoughts on the content. -

2017 Ford Fiesta Titanium - 2017 Ford Fiesta battery problems 7 Aug 2019 (Forum)
I am having problems with the battery on a 2017 (registered Jan 2018) Fiesta. After parking up for 2 weeks the battery was completely flat. Even after long runs (300 miles) the battery is testing at 50% charge. The Stop-Start ceases to work as the battery is below 85%. The dealer has so far fitted 2 new batteries but I feel that there is a more fundamental issue with the electrics either draining the battery or not charging it properly. -
Any - 'No brainer' fuel change 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
The motivation appears to be two-fold: to safeguard jobs in the bioethanol sector, and to reduce carbon emissions It is reported that the E10 gives a slightly poorer fuel economy (perhaps 1%) - and presumably a slight reduction in power output. This would seem to run completely counter to HJ's frequent exhortations to use V-Power or other premium fuels - I wonder whether he will comment in his column? -
Astra G smoking 1 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Hi I have a 51 plate astra g 1.6 16v. When cold is a bit sluggish but kind of accepted given the age. Runs fine until the engine gets to 90 degrees then I get a white cloud on pulling off in 1st and a smaller cloud when accelerating hard. There's no massive oil loss or coolant drop, no mayo on the oil cap. -
Leaf 20 Apr 2019 (Forum)
I don’t think I could live with this palaver, how would you go about a long trip? I don!t know the real distance between charging needed but I can imagine running out of battery in the middle of nowhere on a cold January night. -
Mobile Electric charging point 6 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Reckon with at least a 150kVA generator and car having charging capacity to take 100kW could charge a car up in about 45 minutes. Just looked up Jaguar I pace. On a legal basis would it be permissible to run the genny on red diesel as it would not be directly used for propulsion ? -

BMW i3 - Depreciation on Petrol Hybrids and Fully Electric 26 Oct 2018 (Forum)
Thinking of going petrol hybrid or possibly fully electric to replace a Fiat 500 that we only ever use for short runs and commuting about 30 miles a day. The form to post here requires I put in a make/model which I have said is BMW i3, but not wedded to that, if anything an Audi A1 would be preferable. What's the received wisdom on how these vehicles are depreciating?
