  • Air conditioning, could be better? 10 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Air conditioning in cars. How come air conditioning is often so troublesome in cars? Contrasted that is, with the household fridge which seems so similar. we have two fridges past down from owner to owner with the house and are running fine at 25 yrs old, running 24/7.
  • Should I buy this Nissan QX 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Anyhow, today I had a drive in a 1998 Nissan QX V6 2.0 litre Auto. The car was honestly in showroom condition, not a mark on it, inside or out. Took it on a long drive and it goes very nicely - very quiet. Comes with a fully bang-up-to-date stamped service book from the supplying Nissan dealer and all old MoT's.
  • New car for parents 1 Dec 2005 (Forum)
My 70 ish parents have two old cars that are not worth a penny, they are thinking of spending approx £3-£5k on one car to replace both. It needs to be not too large otherwise my mother will not drive it though big enough to get my fairly fit dad's mountain bike in the back.
  • service history - what a load of rubbish 11 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I've been looking at a few Audi S8s yesterday and also calling up some independent dealers. The cars are 6 or 7 years old, all have Audi stamps in the service book, but none of the cars have any previous receipts/invoices to prove that the car has been looked after. The point I'm trying to make is that if you take a car for servicing, and the dealer says "oh, you need to change your discs and your bushes and whatever else", and you just say, "naah, I will stick to the service only", you still get your service book stamped.
  • Used car for £5000 - suggestions? 25 Apr 2005 (Forum)
, Fabia (good cars), Panda (strangely appealling) or Punto (too old again?) Don't want Renault again and Fords give me backache. Any others I should consider? Outside option is a Smart ForTwo - had two previous ones so like them a lot and mpg is good and from other owners experience they stand up well in accidents.
  • TV show "can you make $$ in used cars" 26 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I saw this programme recently, on five?, It was called something like "can you make money buying and selling cars" or maybe that was the tagline. The idea was that they were given money, had to buy a car at auction (BCA) then they take it home dress it up, clean it,etc and then they sell it again at auction (not BCA).
  • How to sell a car on credit 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I'm not sure what I will do about it, but the worst case scenario, which hopefully I won't have to do, is that I would have to try and sell it. Supposing I choose to sell it, how would I go about it? I would be replacing it with a car costing £2K or less so a trade in at a dealer is unlikely as there aren't many dealers round here that deal in old and new metal from the same forecourt. So that leaves a private sale, what are the pitfalls of trying to sell my car with finance outstanding?
  • Wot car? 22 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I am looking to change my 10 year old very reliable Volvo 740 for a similar sized car but am really put off by the cost of even simple repairs to the electrics on modern cars. For example, my wife recently bought a Mondeo privately and, as we were only given one key, she was told she had to have the whole thing re-coded at at a cost of £75 including two new keys.
  • Citroen DS3 - Citroen dealership caught speeding in my car 17 Jul 2012 (Forum)
have had an issue with my local citroen dealership where a member of their staff has been caught, without my permission, using my car for personal use, and caught speeding, whilst it has been in for warranty repairs. the car went in with engine issues, sudden loss of power and no acceleration. the garage has had three oportunitys to fix the car. the first time they did a software reset and gave it me back. the second time they replaced the timing chain and other associated parts. the third time they replaced the fuel pump. the car is, for now, OK but I've now had a letter from the police over an alleged speeding offence. this is dated to a Sunday, at 16:00, outside of business hours, at a time when i did not have possession of the car and had not given permission for the person who used the car permission to do so. surely this is classed as theft i would like to refuse the car and have my initial deposit refunded. the car is now 13 months old, i have owned it from new, having bought it from the garage where this offence has taken place advice would be greatly appreciated.
  • KIA Picanto - Accidentally starting car in gear, with clutch out 26 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Hi, Can anyone please put my mind at rest. I have a very nice Kia Picanto, only18 months old. As we have been away a lot recently, and not using the car. With all this wet and damp weather I found that the handbrake was starting to 'seize up' on the driveway. In order to try and combat this, i have recently stated parking the car on the driveway with the car wheels 'chocked' at the front with the handbrake off, and an extra precaution of leaving the car in gear.
  • What would you do - neighbour spraying car 27 May 2008 (Forum)
I cannot put the new car in the garage as 1) The other car is in it 2) the new car is too tall and too wide - 21st Century cars do not fit mid 20th century garages.
  • Used Car dealers / Salesmen 14 Nov 2006 (Forum)
(Planning on part exchanging current 5 year old car for a used model around £9k) Tried contacting two other main dealers (Ford and Toyota) via website...so far nothing... I went around to one dealer and asked about sourcing cars from other Dealerships in the manufacturer group (they had a very limited stock) - they seemed very disinterested...
  • Mazda CX-5 - Mazda CX-5 Engine failure. 30 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Obviously until they come back to us this is conjecture, but can anyone one offer any advice if this turns out to be the issue? A 4.5 year old car with full dealer service history surely can't be fit for purpose if the engine fails like this.  Any thoughts or advice is welcome.
  • Toyota Avensis 2006 Petrol - Engine vibration 5 May 2015 (Forum)
I must admit that the vibration seems worse when actually driving the car, but the vibration can be felt when stationary, thus must be engine related. I took my car to 2 private garages and a Toyota dealer. The private garages told me it was engine resonance and tightened every nut they could find, especially the engine mounts.
  • Nissan Almera: manual or automatic? 4 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Either will be more than powerful enough for me, and I can see a smallish difference in the fuel consumption, but is it true that the 1.8 is more reliable? 3) Is an ex-rental car OK? There seem to be several 6-18 month old Almera autos on Autotrader, all with about 7-12,000 miles, which implies to me that they may have been used for rental. (Is that a silly guess?) If a car does turn out to be ex-rental, is that a reason to avoid?
  • Do you think it's the battery? (Vectra) 13 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Being of the female persuasion and knowing as much about cars as I do about rugby - which is zilch - although I do like men in shorts - I opened my grumpy old Vectra this morning and noticed that the doors unlocked rather slowly and the beep for the alarm turning off sounded a bit feeble.
  • Honda CRV 2014 diesel 2.2 - Advice needed re.used CRV warning lights 3 Jun 2021 (Forum)
After owning two very old and battered cars (and spending no money on them as they were pretty much fault free for 17 years) we decided to buy a CRV from a very well known dealer. Looked tidy, fairly low mileage for year, drove well.
  • Volvo C30 - Taking on home based car maintenance 14 Feb 2018 (Forum)
We bought a  three year old Volvo C30 seven years ago, which we are very happy and content with, and after having it serviced by our local garage over the years we decided that it was time the now ten year old car had a proper main Volvo agency birthday service.
  • 2005 VW Transporter. Maybe changing it? 26 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I am not sure whether AWD is really worth the extra cost as I will hve winter tyres etc. A note about used cars here. There is no nearly new market, the newest cars generally are 4 yeas old and there isn't enough difference in cost to justify not going new. Also 5 to 10 year old cars are expensive. Outside of the Dacias everything available in the UK is available here with the wildcard being the Lada 4x4 which even comes with air conditioning!!
