  • Driving without splashboard 28 May 2008 (Forum)
Hi all. Driving to work yesterday the spalshboard under the engine near the exhaust came off. It wasn't pretty as i was doing 70 at the time. Anyway I've lost the whole thing. Question is will it be OK to not bother replacing it.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.6 knocking steering? or drive shafts? 24 Jan 2008 (Forum)
when reversing car on full lock I get loud knocking noise from left hand wheel area, some times right. It sounds like the drive shaft is binding up, Any one know what's wrong, or how much its going to cost. thanks
  • Soon you can drive on hard shoulder 26 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Today's radio news says plans are on way to allow hard shoulder as a driving lane on some of the motorways (eg. M1, M6, M42 etc.). However, many wonder where do you stop then for emergency! By the way, we already use a good part of M1 hard shoulder between J6 & J10. Usually these areas are covered by Free Recovery Service.
  • Renault Clio drive problems 22 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I am currently having problems with my clio, It is a L reg 1.4 auto. While driving the rev counter will suddently jump up to around 60000 rpm, and then settle back to 30rpm. Also when sat at lights it is prone to jumping forward, or feels like it is slipping out of gear. I was wondering is it the Idle control problem or worse still a gearbox fault, or could it be something easl?
  • Driving with no tax. 29 Mar 2006 (Forum)
If I buy a car which does not have any tax but has an MOT and I have insured it, whats the legal position on driving the thing home? Obviously in a perfect situation I would tax it straight away, but as you now have to have an MOT and insurance documents with you in order to buy a tax disc, this isn't always possible.
  • Stereotypical Drivers 26 Mar 2006 (Forum)
As I drive around in a non official capacity I have noticed that drivers who blatantly use a mobile phone when driving frequently do not wear a seat belt and drive in an aggressive manner (probably because they are not in full control of the vehicle).
  • Driving in Cape Town 25 Mar 2006 (Forum)
My wife and I are shortly off to Cape town for two weeks - have Backroomers any advice/warnings about the driving dangers? I've booked a group 2 car(Corolla)from the local Avis branch. I've read the broad hints from the Rough Guide- keep all the doors locked etc. but wondered if anyone who's been there recently could advise.
  • Who are the bad drivers? 23 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I have read the Honest John Backroom off and on for a few years and am struck by the generally responsible attitude of its contributors. No one here ever drives with fog lights on unnecessarily, or holds a mobile phone whilst driving, or drink-drives, or sits in traffic with their brake lights on, etc. As the HJ board is widely read and we are all so considerate and law abiding, just who are these bad drivers?
  • driving to Slovenia - Ljubljana 3 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Okie dokie, nothing like advanced planning. There is a good chance I shall be driving to Ljubljana - next April. No cant fly due to the "cargo" My sat nav stops at Austria tho Michelin web site covers it all the way - about 1300 kms Calais to Ljubljana. I assume my route will be through Austria.
  • Get paid to drive a Renault! 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Yes that's right! Just got an email offering me £15 of M&S vouchers for test driving one of their cars - so booked up a Clio 182 to test next Saturday. I assume it's open to anyone, just visit http://www.summertestdrive.co.uk to book. I've made sure i've got the email printed too, just in case the vouchers don't appear.
  • Before driving away your new car...... 12 May 2005 (Forum)
On collecting your brand new car can the dealer force you to sign something to say the car is cosmetically perfect before you drive it away? I think under the Sale of Goods Acta you are entitled to a reasonable length of time to examine it, say a week or so? Some things show under different lights for example and are not immediately apparent.
  • Scenic Drives in Scotland 28 Jan 2005 (Forum)
We had a few days around Loch Lomand and the Trossachs a couple of years ago and it was superb. This time, I'm thinking that we should drive up much further into the Highlands. Does anyone have any recommendations for any really scenic routes? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Brian
  • Interior lights when driving 22 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The Blackpool illuminations thread has reminded me of something I find most odd. I thought the people on TV driving around at night with the interior light(s) on was simply to aid the camera shot but have noticed quite a few drivers doing exactly this. Surely this considerably reduces their ability to see out, although it could explain why they need their headlights and foglights on all the time?
  • Driving from the rear seat. 12 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I've suddenly developed an interest in a Picasso. I know a new car takes some getting used to. But how long is the process in a Picasso where you drive from what in any other car would be the rear seat? Seriously that is a very nasty feeling. And the pedals are way off set or I need an operation. Or I've turned into a grumpy old git and not noticed.
  • Chain drive small hatch ideas plse 19 May 2003 (Forum)
Folks I'm starting to look around for a small hatch, about 1 year old and want if possible to avoid belt- driven motors. I know the new Ibiza 1.2 is chain as are the small engined new Corsas. Any other chain drives out there. What about the Yaris? Any info most welcome or advice on the best buy. Thanks Baz
  • drink driving/ piloting limits 13 Feb 2003 (Forum)
In contrast to driving I read recently that there is no actual legal limit to a pilots intake of alchohol, in fact they are allowed to drink prior to take off. Obviously if a pilot was found under the influence he would lose his licence and job, it just seems odd to me that they are allowed to drink and then pilot an aircraft with peoples lives under his responsibility.
  • Octavia cruise control - drive by wire 16 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a retro-fit electronic cruise control for my Skoda Octavia (2001) SDi? It has an electronic speedometer (i.e. drops to 0 if you switch ignition off), and a "drive-by-wire" accelerator, no physical cable linking pedal to engine. Surely it should just be a "plug-in" module with a set of dash controls, (set, resume, cancel, +, - ?)
  • Cars and mobile phones 4 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Its time to stop people using mobile phones while they are driving. Everyday i will follow somebody who decides to answer a call, then the inevitable erratic driving happens - you know speed up/down , wander across lanes. The vast majority of us do not have the coordination to drive, hold a mobile and a conversation.
  • Rear wheel drive tyre wear 21 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The tyres were on the vehicle when I bought it and I have covered 25k on them. Is this kind of wear pattern normal on a rear wheel drive car? Thanks
  • Driving with no rear plate. 22 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Went past several Rozzers including one speed trap and got no interest. It's back on now but I would suggest for the 'one off' long distance high risk drive this is the ideal Camera risk avoidance strategy. (And no, I didn't deliberately speed - jsut using plate removal as belt and braces...)
