Focus Tdci Running Problem 30 Jan 2005 (Forum)
this happens at lower speeds 30mph ish restarts fine and drives off and does the same thing again usually a mile or so down road. have changed fuel filter and it has made no difference ,yet it will do 70 miles or so without a problem thinking the auction the car came from had put petrol in tank(only a 1/4 tank in car when problems started)i filled it up with diesel to full and this has inproved things but it still breaking down every now and then ,it usually jerks before it dies . i drove the car at 70mph the other day and it went fine but every now and then it popped like some rough fuel was going through but it didnt stall or the light stayed out any ideas ,was her indoors xmas present and she wont drive it anymore!!! -
Peugeot 106 diesel wont start when cold 3 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Engine idle speed varies when first started and sometimes the engine accelerates on its on when cold. Eventually discovered that priming the fuel system gives much better results when starting. So I'm assuming there is an air leak in the fuel system somewhere. Not sure where to go next as has already cost me about £500 for parts, labour, service and MOT on a car thats worth £1000 tops. -
Golf Diesel Cutting Out 18 Oct 2004 (Forum)
It broke down, we went out and got it started and returned to workshop and on the way back after about 35 to 40 mph. you could feel it wanting to chuck it, but if you backed off the pedal it would recover. Everything you could think of we checked, ie tank unit out checked filters, blew fuel lines out, replaced fuel filter, checked all joints for sucking in air. One day a chap was walking past the garage who knew the boss and commented on this car and gave him a bit of history. He said it had been to the dealers who had replaced allsorts and gave it back to the garage who had sent it in for repair, who in turn had given it back to their customer, and it broke down in the Tyne Tunnel. -
Ford Fiesta - misfiring, it now happens 2 Jun 2004 (Forum)
4. ive had the diesel leaked fixed, it was leaking from the throtle shaft seal. 5. its now running on so called "cleaner diesel", but it was misfiring before the change, so ive ruled that out 6. ive tried changing petrol stations, no difference to misfiring or the smoke. 7. ive replaced the fuel filter & checked for water getting into the fuel. both have got no problems. any ideas before i start shelling out money on parts that i might not need? -- shaun the sheep ford fiesta. 1.8d. j reg. 91'. -
Mondeo Pinking 4 Aug 2003 (Forum)
When the weather is warm I get quite severe pinking from 3000rpm upwards with high load ( uphill or accelerating ), this pinking seems to coincide with the opening of the secondary throttles. I maintain the car myself and it has new spark plugs, HT leads, air filter and fuel filter. Ive tried running higher octane fuel ( Shell Optimax ) and the pinking is still there. Ive checked the Intake Air Temp sensor and it gives a reading of approx 25kOhms at 20degC which seems to be OK. -
Security suggestions for yard 7 Mar 2003 (Forum)
What appears to be happening is that the fuel thieves are getting into the water board property, then either lifting up or pulling down the wire fence to get into our yard. We have sensor floodlights but no CCTV, and the yard is located at the end of a 1-mile long industrial estate road. -
VW/skoda 1.4 16V engine - chipped back? 16 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The problem is that if you extend the engine beyond 4500 rpm you are wasting your time, indeed the rev cut off is a lowly 5700rpm has the engine been deliberately chipped back to avoid the lowly 1.4 embarrasing the larger engines or has it got a different cam profile to maximise tourque??? (PS would I still get this fuel economy if I converted to gas?) -
Holiday Hire Cars 29 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I then spotted we had the new 1.5 common rail diesel dCi model and my interest was roused. The highlight had to be traveling for extended periods with no discernible movement from the fuel gauge. My wife who did most of the driving (while I was sampling the local alcoholic beverages) has a rather heavy right foot, but we still achieved nearly 60mpg. Perhaps I've got latent green tendencies but there was something immensely satisfying about using so little fuel. -
Viruses - Microsofts attitude 28 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Would any other type of business charge customers to fix faults which are clearly present in their products ? Would a motor manufacturer who is recalling some cars say -- We have found a fault with fuel lines which we have modified and will replace free of charge, but YOU will have to buy a new fuel tank so we can attach them. -
Lexus Rz450 z - Steering by wire 4 Aug 2025 (Forum)
We all marvelled in the 90s when our cars accelerator pedal actuator was replaced by a rheostat controlling the fuel injection system. But now the new fly by wire steering systems have sensors on the steering wheel controlling actuators on the wheels. No more arm wrestling in tight spots because of the variable power assistance but a bit scary to rely on electronics for this basic function . -

Recommendations Estate/SUV £3-4K 11 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I am looking for an estate/SUV for £3-4k (ideally 3). Reliability first and foremost, fuel efficiency second. Needs to cater for occasional DIY runs and carry my dog and family comfortably. Auto preferred but this probably throws both of my criteria into question? Thanks in advance -

Mazda 2 1.6d Sport - Diesel Engine Maintenance 1 Dec 2021 (Forum)
Having bought a diesel car this week which is 9 years old and has about 66k mileage i was wondering what people's thoughts are on looking after the engine, is it worth adding fuel cleaners occasionally when i fill up? Is Shell Diesel really better quality and better for the engine than supermarket diesel? -

Audi A2 tdi - Two stroke oil in PD Tdi engines 8 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Seen a recommendation to add a small amount of two stroke oil to the fuel to quieten the engine. Seems to work but are there any issues with this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silkolene-SCOOT-2-Semi-Synthetic-2-Stroke-Engine-Oil-For-Scooters-Mopeds-1-L/332423849916?epid=1857806258&hash=item4d660167bc:g:o0EAAOSwAHBZ7xHM -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 24-11-2018 Part 1 30 Nov 2018 (Forum)
This is a known issue on other VAG products, eg Audi TT. Also, letting an engine run when stopped for fuel at a pump is not a good idea.... -

Vw getting into even deeper do do. 13 Nov 2015 (Forum)
http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/aa35f24c-8259-11e5-a01c-8650859a4767.html (Google "vw cheating probe spreads to co2 tests" if link doesnt work) Looks as if they've been gaming the CO2 and fuel consumption tests too. Quelle surprise... How are the authorities going to deal with all this cheating I wonder?
