We all marvelled in the 90s when our cars accelerator pedal actuator was replaced by a rheostat controlling the fuel injection system.

But now the new fly by wire steering systems have sensors on the steering wheel controlling actuators on the wheels.

No more arm wrestling in tight spots because of the variable power assistance but a bit scary to rely on electronics for this basic function .

No need for arm wrestling with variable power assistance if it's combined with variable ratio.

Fly-by-wire is common on modern airliners - but they have standards of design, testing, construction and maintenance many time higher than cars - and still they crash occasionally!

Is steer by wire actually fitted to anything currently on the market?

Brake by wire is prevalent (including Lexus), but I’m not sure about steering.

The Lexus RZ450e has steer-by-wire as an option

Don’t know of any car that is brake by wire . All braking systems are hydraulic, but there’s a move to electronic hydraulic systems with no vacuum servo .

I suspect cross purposes.
Yes, everything has hydraulic brakes but the mechanical link between pedal and master cylinder is being eliminated in EV’s and hybrids and replaced by an electronic signal.

Thanks for clarifying this doc.

Is this the problem with the compensator unit which simulates the brake pedal feel that some Honda cars have experienced.?

Toyota Landcruisers and other lareg Toyotas have had hydraulic directly connected brakes assisted by an electric pressure pump/accumulator since the late 90's, a reliable simple system capable of really powerful braking, is this the sort of thing being referred to?

Mercedes had a similar type of pressurised system called SBS in the noughties, it wasn't great because as far as i understood it was pre programed with so many thousand operations and would then shut down, it was dropped in later models, a good indy could reset the 'counter' as it were, it also required some care when being worked on because the system didn't fully go to sleep, crushed fingers for the unwary was a real if rare risk if the system wasn't put to sleep correctly.

There are huge safety risks associated with all these advanced electronic systems . I have no concerns about anything introduced by Lexus but I’ve heard that some Chinese manufacturers and car component makers are using domestic quality components whose specification may vary especially the low end temperature rating .
