Bother with an expensive service item on old car? 2 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Just thought I'd garner your opinions on whether it's worth messing around with an expensive preventative service measure on an old car. Specific example being our Daewoo, probably worth about £400 (Nubira, R-reg, 1.6SE manual saloon, 48K miles, no service record but in good overall condition, engine sweet as a nut, no rust anywhere, everything still works) -- if we don't get hammered due to lack of interest on such an undesirable car. -
Old Fiesta diesel - dying? 9 Dec 2004 (Forum)
But when I change up through the gears a bit soon, or negotiate sharp bends or roundabouts without changing down from third to second, the whole car just jerks and "kangaroos". To pull away I need to drop another cog. Should I be worried that I've spent my hard-earned on a car on it's last legs? Or is it just normal that this wheezy old torque-free lump can't pull itself along? -
Any - Renewing old paper licence 29 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Has anyone changed their old paper driving licence (pre 1998) to the newer id card style? I tried to renew mine as it was tatty, and I'm hiring a car abroad this year and thought it would be better to have the newer one. -
Old Merc? 12 Feb 2019 (Forum)
The itch to replace my Logan (now just coming up to three years old) with an older semi-classic estate is presenting itself again! I have spotted a 1988 Merc W124 at a local specialist, who I know through using them when I had my CLK. They know the car having serviced it, and it looks in good nick, with 120,000 miles and a good history. -
Old age Air-con lifespan 24 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I am fairly certain the air-con in my seven year old Mondeo has never been repaired/regassed at all since new, yet it still seems to working fairly effectively if not 100%. I rarely use it winter except to speed up screen de-misting, so it is not as if I have it running regularly outside of the June-August decent weather period....anyone have an older car than mine with air-con that has not needed any work? -

Rust on Mid 1990 cars - which manufacturer is wors 29 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Why don't companies realise that, not only does rust depress resale values and reputations, but also, corrosion seriously compromises the strength of the car? Crash tests are all well and good on new cars, but the average age of cars in Britain must be around five years ? most of us therefor drive cars 5 year olds and over? - So what of the crash worthiness of five year old cars? -

Any - Old jack as bead breaker 6 Apr 2017 (Forum)
Long time since I last did this, and when I did IIRC driving onto the tyre or using the heel of a bottle jack under the car worked OK. Not any more. Just slip off. I might have lost the knack. I suspect my old (Girling) tyre levers were better than my current ones too. I kept the old screw-jack when I scrapped my Ford Sierra, which works a bit, though i think some curved extension plate to the foot to keep the pressure near the bead would work better. -
Peugoet 306 TD 1.9 - Bottom Hose 6 Jan 2011 (Forum)
My problem is that the notch on my new radiator and the one on the new hose only line uo in a way that the hose is sitting next to the main radiator tank and the only way to get the hose in the right position is to twist the hose itself which leaves a kink in the hose. Stupidly i didnt take note of the old hose on the old radiator before removal just took it all off. The notch on the old radiator is the same as the new but i no longer have the old hose. Could anyone help please as i am quickly loosing patience with this car!! -

Is Citroen Air Suspension Reliable? 2 Jun 2007 (Forum)
A question regarding Citroen's hydro-pneumatic suspension, It seemed to be that with the old BXs, that when the mileage got high, the car got a little old and the suspension gave problems it would mean big bills. Is it still the same with the modern Citroens (like the C5), or is the system now more reliable at high mileage? -
Crash worthiness of classic/old cars 8 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I think scally wags are about at this time of night. Question is, does anyone remember having a bump in the seventies/seventies era car and how did it/you stand up? I'm trying to weigh up the added risks of driving my old Allegro vs My 1999 Rover 620ti (itself not the strongest of cars I'm led to believe) What are the implications of an Allegro or such like being hit by any 1993 is onwards (airbagged) type cars? -

Are the goalposts moving faster? 7 Feb 2003 (Forum)
For some models this is not much longer than the original warranty. As the perceived life of a car shrinks, will typical owners see it as less worthwhile spending to maintain cars? Soon we shall have to copy the Japanese and export old vehicles just to move them on. -

Wolseleys from the 30s to the 60s. - My accidental interest in old cars 14 Jan 2017 (Forum)
My love of old cars stemmed from my parents only buying what they could afford to pay for without gettig into debt and as a result the cars that they owned were somewhat older than many of our neighbour's. I was born in the late 40s and my father bought his first car a 1932 Fiat 514 in 1950 and this was the one in which he past his test. -
New car dilemma 14 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Hi there I've been pondering this for ages and wondered what peoples opinions were. Shortly we intend to buy a new family car. On the one hand, nearly new Mondeos and Vectras look to be a terrific bargain for about 7 or 8 grand for a car about 18 months old, and they're now very good cars. (even 3 year old new model Accords are coming in for this money now!)
