What to do if you’ve lost your V5C Part of the process for claiming the Historic Vehicle tax class is that the V5C needs to be amended. • Big Increase in Cars Being Bought On ‘Logbook Loans’ 2 Jul 2014 (News)
The second is that the vendor has mortgaged his car with a ‘logbook loan’ company. Here, the car owner borrows money using his car as collateral, giving the V5C ‘logbook’ to the lender as security. So never, ever buy a car from a private vendor or home based trader if the V5C ‘logbook’ is not readily available. Unfortunately, there is nothing to stop a car owner who mortgages his car in this way from obtaining a second ‘duplicate’ V5C ‘logbook’ from the DVLA.

  • Car cloning on the rise - half of all used car checks reveals hidden history 2 Mar 2019 (News)
“The RAC vehicle history check does not give a guarantee against cloned cars," said Rod Dennis of the RAC, "The check looks up whether a car’s number plate has been changed and can confirm if the number plate and vehicle identification number (VIN) match those recorded at the DVLA. “It’s crucial that the V5C matches the car when it comes to both the new number plate and the VIN, but even checking this can’t fully protect against a clone as in some cases fraudsters produce fake V5Cs and even change VINs to match number plates.” The AA offers a car data check service, but says it will only cover losses arising due to car cloning if the vehicle is paid via the banking system – such as cheque or a banker’s draft.

You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the V5C either online or via the DVLA’s automated phone service, which will be in operation 24 hours a day. A change of ownership part-way through any month will therefore see both the vendor and the new owner paying for VED for that month, meaning that the vehicle is effectively ‘taxed twice’.
