  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.8 tdci Injectors? Fuel Pump? Cheap Diesel? 20 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Around 12 months ago, I had a problem with starting & then loss of power & was told by the garage that it was probably the injectors. So they changed the injectors & the fuel filter (as well as flushing the system) It was running ok although was having a small timing issue on the motorway at around 2000 revs (which later cleared up) I have since had problems & had a new clutch & fly wheel. I have also been replacing the fuel filter regulary (the last being 2 weeks ago) This is due to running it on some 'cheap' diesel due to financial issues.
  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - Honda Jazz or Nissan Note - which to go for? 2 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi, I'm looking to buy either a second hand Honda Jazz or Nissan Note and have about £5000 to spend (or maybe a little more) - which one should I go for? I previously had a honda civic and was very impressed with the low running costs, one of the reasons why I am wanting to sell my VW passat tdi (great car but I don't really need all that space and power and do mostly short runs). I'm looking for economy, both in fuel consumption and maintenance, space for the occasional 5 passengers and a dog.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.8 TDdi Mysterious pool of liquid under car... 11 Jul 2008 (Forum)
It seems to be clear liquid, doesn't have a smell to it, so I don't think it's windscreen fluid. The car seems to be driving OK, doesn't seem to be running poorly. Does anyone have any ideas? Having never owned an air-con fitted car myself, It's a bit of a mystery - the wife only uses the air-con sporadically, but I follow the Ford manual which instucts running the air con for at least 30mins per month.
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 1999 1.8 16v Suspension 11 Jun 2008 (Forum)
The rear end is perfect nothing wrong on the back, i have undone all the metal pipes while engine running and they seem to be unblocked and the flush oil is coming through ok. As you can tell i am a little lost on this by now and citreon just say its the oil that need replacing, when i separated the rack i pushed all the dirty oil back in the system but even with this flush there is no improvement. can any one help matt
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 01 1.3 auto significance of faulty exhaust sensor 3 Feb 2008 (Forum)
As emissions is tested as part of the MOT (which it passed without problem) in Nov 07 this sensor is largely redundant / irrelevant and has no bearing on how the car runs. Nissan dealer has quoted £600 to repair" 1. I am not a techie so would appreciate if someone could confirm that "this sensor is largely redundant / irrelevant and has no bearing on how the car runs." 2.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 318 auto - what to look for? 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The car is in top condition - its been cosseted from new - so I'm intending to give it a long and happy life. Any suggestions - especially from those of you who've owned and run 3s - would be welcome. TIA, Gromit PS: Please don't post suggestions for what else I could/should buy, why running a BMW is badge snobbery etc. :-) The inlaws have one to sell, and they're not parting with their equally well cared-for Focus estate which I'd be equally happy with.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - Estate options for 5k 2 Oct 2007 (Forum)
We're in the market for something around the 5k mark which is good to drive, reasonably cheap to run and has room in the back to take a dog crate. Obvious choice (to me) is a Focus estate- never driven one, but appeals because: 1. supposedly great drive (ie. better than equivalent Astra) 2. choice (again, seems to be better than Astras) - don't want to take too long waiting for the right vehicle 3. running costs, although lower than average mileage so don't need a diesel (but would be happy to have a TDCi) 4. highly recommended in the Car-by car breakdown IIRC 1.6 is supposed to be the sweetest unit and performance would be adequate, but wouldn't say no to the 1.8 or 2.0; the extra fuel/insurance isn't a major issue.
  • Nissan Cube (2002 - 2008) - or Cubic, views and suggested alternatives 21 Sep 2007 (Forum)
What alternatives are there in the UK - stylish design with enough space for two adults, three children plus space for additional passengers as required? The car will be mostly used for school run with very occasional motorway trips to relatives. All advice welcome Leapy s
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - TU3 - oil in water & source for engine. 15 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I'm fairly certain that the head gasket will need changing but there are a few questions I have before I attempt this 1: Is there a chance that after a while the head may have warped slightly ( I have heard rumours this "may" happen). The engine (last time it was run) still goes like a rocket!! 2: With the engine having wet liners is it a complete pain to do? and lastly (although i know this wont be the last question I post) 3: What other peugeot models use the TU3 engine that my XS runs as i may just try and source a good engine from somewhere?
  • 1999 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec drinking oil 14 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, newbie first post so hope you can help. Got a 1999 1.25 Ford Fiesta Zetec with 75K on the clock that the wife runs around in that up to now has been relatively trouble free, the car that is not the wife. Car had a major service last December but about a month ago it started to run really hot so I checked the water which was ok so I then ckecked oil and there was next to none in the engine!!
  • Rover 420 SDI 2 litre turbo diesel fault 31 Jul 2007 (Forum)
It will sometimes display this fault when idling by hiccuping and, when it occurs when the engine is pulling, it feels like the driver is stabbing at the brake pedal . This continues until the engine is fully up to temperature and then it runs fine for the rest of that day. Interestingly, if the engine is turned off for a short period (say 5 mins) after even just a mile or two from cold, it runs perfectly when re-started. The coolant temperature sensor, fuel filter and the glow plugs have been renewed.
  • Omega Write-off Value 3 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Which is a shame, really. I'd got it all sorted (after 4 and half years of ownership) and it was running nicely with everything working. It's a 1999 pre-facelift 2.5V6 CDX Omega saloon, petrol, manual with 96K on the clock. How much do you think I be should looking for as an insurance settlement? I wonder what I should replace it with?
  • Mystery Oil Leak - Corsa 1.4 8v (X14SZ) 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
{Added to subject header so as to catch the eye of possible Vauxhall experts - DD} Its definitely not the oil filter or the oil draining plug. I initially thought it was the "seam" that runs around the bottom of the sump, as this is very wet. There is not much wetness above this line however. I was informed by a mechanic friend (who lives too far away to look at it) that it is probably coming from above this seam, and pooling above it before running down and dripping off.
  • Aircon maintenance - R12 and options 21 May 2007 (Forum)
This seems bizarre: it is surely less wasteful of resources and more environmentally friendly to keep existing R12 systems intact and running well than to have to empty them, dispose of the R12, fit new parts and use alternative (but probably equally environmentally-unfriendly) refrigerant fluids. Although R12 is not now used in new cars in the EU or in the US, it is apparently still possible and legal in the US to obtain and use recycled/recovered R12 to keep existing R12 systems topped up.
  • Vectra Alternator 25 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The fuses are all fine, the Vectra starts okay but cuts out when the jump lead is removed. The battery does charge because if I leave it 'jumping' for while the car will run on it's own for a few minutes until the charge runs out. The Battery warning light was on but flared and went out, it now does not light up at ignition. I think I've burnt out the diode pack on the alternator by reversing the polarity.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 1999 2.0 SRi - gearbox problem 23 Mar 2007 (Forum)
There's no crunching sound from any gear so I assume the syncromesh etc is working. Once the engine is at normal running temperature, the problem disappears and I can change gears normally. Even when the engine is cold, I can easily change gears when the engine isn't running but as soon as I start the engine, the gearbox starts acting up.
  • 18k to spend - speed & prestige needed 23 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The cars I've thought about are: BMW M3 E46 ('01 ish) -- worried about losing value now new shape is due BMW Z4 ('03) -- A4 Conv 3.0 / 3.0 quat ('02-'03) -- doesn't look that fast on paper (7.6s 0-60) Boxter S ('00 ish) -- Other considerations (where running costs scare me): Maseratti 3200 ('99 ish) Merc CL500 ('01 ish) BMW M5 ('01 ish) Has anyone got any feedback? Am I right to be scared of the running costs of the cars in the last group? I can spend arround 800-1000 a year on servicing / repairs / parts
  • LR Defender- to buy or not? 17 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I have been offered an N reg Defender 90, and in my 30+ years of motoring have never run a LR product...very wise some might say! I sold my Legacy estate some 2 years ago, but continued to run my '97 VW Transporter, for no reason other than emotional attachment. During the next 6 months I am having a house extension built, and once complete, will assess my finances and purchase a car.
  • Cavalier SRi Ecotec difficult starting 8 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Crank it some more, catches, misses, dies splutters etc (sounds like fuel problem?). Eventually it will catch and splutter into life, after which it runs, but I have to keep my foot on the accelerator for the first minute or so or it stalls again (would ICVS cause difficult starting. I have had idling problems with it in the past and have cleaned it out, does it need this again, or is ICVS not related to bad starting).
  • Reliable, cheap French car - possible? 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
What with the high cost of french s/h cars I'm minded to buy a RHD car in England, run it here for a while to make sure any bugs are sorted out and then drive it to the french holiday house where (with right-hand dipping headlights) it will live out it's natural life. It certainly won't have much retained local value as RHD!
