and some very snazzy customised older vehicles (I saw a particularly fine blue metallic flake 1932 Ford 2-door for example? along with all the properly customised or decorated old and new cars there are lots of Barryboy-style carp ones (but you have to start somewhere)?), the car culture in Newcastle where I stayed most seemed more about wheelspin than speed. Hardly anyone goes fast, or not where you can see them, but you quite often hear what sounds like a dragster melting its tyres just round the corner.
• Grand Scenic - full review. 3 May 2007 (Forum)
But on the whole it's exactly what I hoped for. It's a spacious, very comfortable, very refined and a very pleasant car to use. It encourages a more sedate driving style which can only be a good thing with kids in the car, and driven thus, rewards with noise levels and comfort which are as soothing as any half-affordable exec car I've been in.
• 2yrs on from buying a 9yr old dpf-equipped diesel 10 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Oct 2018 - on drive down to Devon for a half-term break, dash engine management light comes on. Car behaviour seemingly unaffected. Light remains on during stay, but clears on way home. Light then reappears on commute a few days later. Diagnosed as failed Proportional Richness Sensor. Garage advises car can be driven safely until next service.

This means 3rd to 40mph, 4th to 50, 5th to 60, 6th thereafter. Once I changed my gear change pattern the car was much happier and I can now drive the car properly! Despite that its not a pootling around town car, it is very much a long distance open road car, which is exactly why it was purchased. The only off road it has done is the Kielder Forest Track which is an unmade surface, no dramas whatsoever and despite the rough surface the unevenness was soaked up.
• Police Numbers 26 Jan 2002 (Forum)
My old patch - which had 8563 souls on its electoral role+ under 18s, was Policed by three of us - one on a day off, one on days and one on lates and we covered everything bar fatal TAs and Serious Crime. In one 12 month period I recall, I dealt with an Air Crash - the bodies, and associated enquiries, 13 "other" fatalities. An average of one a week of damage, and injury TAs, a domestic a shift and all the other c***p.
• Nerves frayed and shot 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I took the secondary road and drove round the back of the building only to find that as the road leads in to the car park, some idiot had just stopped there, left his Kangoo and gone shopping. I couldn't believe it - two cars behind me, getting impatient and a selfish, moronic cretin blocking me in front. Had there not been a mountain of snow I could have passed but even on full lock the car was pushed sideways by snow into the offending vehicle.

Insurance is £480 for a 55 year old with max no claims. I don't know if that is a lot as I've had company cars for quite a while. On average, I cover about 18,000 to 20,000 business miles a year and around 7,000 private miles. I might end up doing quite a bit more business miles over the next 2 or 3 years so I was attracted to to the 5 year unlimited mileage warranty.

• My Road Test - Volvo XC70 D5 Summum Auto 19 Jul 2006 (Forum)
The formula for a XC70 is simple: take an ordinary V70, double its ground clearance, add some plastic inserts & covers, new grille and spice it up with active suspension and an intelligent 4x4 system. Oh, and add a nice aluminium handle for the passenger, while you're at it. Yes, I guess that would be all... A cross country estate, at your service.
• Scam 21 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The cheque is fake & bounces you are then in debt to the bank. Deal only with people in your country that actually come to see the car. Ask yourself the simple question - why when there are so many cars all over the world would someone want to buy your car and then add ££££s to ship it overseas? - crazy this may be but people are getting stung to the tune of a few grand!
• Right to Silence court case Monday, and publicity 23 Apr 2002 (Forum)
BBC Item I did not see. Secondhand report and old film but covered anyway, probably in South only. Interview Monday pm on radio in South Wales and Tueday on County Sound, Hampshire. Long article in Daily Mail page 19, 2/3 page showing 'Road Casualties Rise' as speed camera fines double to £25m, then 1/3 page on my case, with picture.
• Letter Fom The Colonies Vol 11 14 Mar 2005 (Forum)
One imagines if there was an MOT here that the horn would be a major failure item before anything else. Most cabs are the long-suffering Toyota Corolla of the 90's (no other car could take the punishment) and the clonks and rattles underneath are torture to a car lover like me. Drivers have to pay a daily "boundary" to the taxi owner. That's about £8. Which means they don't earn anything till they've done a number of trips each day.
• Speed cameras examined 28 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Truvelo D-Cam What is it? A speed and red light camera in one that can cover up to three lanes of traffic and be rear as well as forward facing. How does it work? When used as a traffic light camera, a set of sensors is buried before the stop line and three check lines are painted on the road after it.
• Gear Oil Questions and Answers 15 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Use of the incorrect oil can lead to clutch degradation and vibration. Why should I choose non-EP straight oils for my classic car? Depending on the age, make and model non-EP gear oils may be required for use in gearboxes and final drives. Certain designs contained a lot of phosphor-bronze (copper containing) components that are sensitive particularly to the sulphur extreme pressure (EP) additive.
• 2004 Pontiac GTO - Motor Trend review 7 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Surprise #6: The GTO apparently has Cool Whip in its suspension. Forget that punishing big-numbers ride we've come to expect from performance cars--the GTO is too well-mannered to deliver constant, seat-pounding reminders of its sport-coupe intentions. Maximum handling grip--0.80 g--doesn't set any performance standards, but the GTO's real-world useability does.
• Veg oil in your tank 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
The thing people might note about this is that the test, getting from Hamburg to Alicante on Aldi supermarket's salad oil, involved using an old diesel Golf that had covered nearly 500,000 km - about 300,000 miles - and the engine had done about 250,000 km . The author tested other oils too - fish oil stank too much and corn oil produced clouds of smoke. Salad oil apparently made th car slower in traffic and it was difficult to start and noisy - and when the driver and his photographer stopped the night near Barcelona they had awful trouble getting the car started in the morning (they eventually succeeded with a can of aerosol starting aid).
• Ford Transit - Help with independent dealer 21 Dec 2013 (Forum)
We returned later that same day to pay the amount in full but he has put 5/12/13 on both the deposit and the Used Car Invoice, which I probably should've checked and amended. On getting the van home it was dark and from signalling during the drive home, it was clear the left indicator bulb was going - it was flicking on and off very quickly.
• How to sell scooters 23 Apr 2001 (Forum)
If they want a 50cc, tell them they could try the 180 because it?s exactly the same really apart from the seat lock. Then point out that their licence doesn?t cover them to drive it so they can?t possibly go beyond the forecourt.. Make sure they understand that if it was down to you you?d let them have it for the weekend free, but ?it?s the insurance that?s the problem.?

Amir has decided to join the conversation, Westlife?s charms having evidently palled on him. ?Yer mean, it hit another car like?? For an English teacher who lives abroad, Jordan seems to be rather short on decoding verbal communication sometimes. I bet he spends too much time on the internet, but then who am I to talk?
