  • What to choose for long motorway trips? 16 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I’m thinking of spending £8000 - £10000 on a used car, and it needs to be reliable, reasonable running and servicing costs and sufficiently powered and comfortable for motorway driving. I've had a look at the Renault Captur, would you recommend it?    Thanks

  • SUV or MPV - Cheap car/van, SUV or MPV 17 May 2019 (Forum)
Hi, I need a new cheap car/van. I work for myself in art and antiques and currently run a Renault Grand Espace It’s great to use as a van, but also a great family car at weekends. Only problem has been removing, then storing, the putting the VERY heavy rear seats back in again, all the time.
  • Used Hyundai ix20 - dealer or franchise? 9 Sep 2018 (Forum)
My S-i-L wants me to help her find a new car.  She currently drives our old Renault Modus and after seeking advice on here and elsewhere the consensus is the ix20 should be ideal.  She is going to her local dealer tomorrow for a test drive to be sure it ticks all the boxes (high driving position, good boot space and capable of seating 4).
  • Conversation with a mechanical fitter 14 May 2018 (Forum)
I had the pleasure tofay of spending nearly an hour in the company of a hire car company mechaincal fitter/repair guy who was attending a relatives hire van His pearls of wisdom -  If your buying a car, buy Toyota or Lexus If your buying a car, dont buy a Renault  If your buying a commercial vehicle, buy a MAN TGE (far better aftersales support than VW provide with the Crafter), a Vauxhall Vivaro (easy to work on, not alot goes wrong) or Toyota Hilux (only ever need a service) If your buying a commercial vehicle dont buy any IVECO model ('Fiat rubbish') or a Ford Transit Courier with the 1.0 ecoboost engine (clutches dont last long) A few recent things he mentioned -  * currently only Landrover dealers can change the rear brakes on the discovery sport, its meant to be very complex with the electric parking brake  * there is a batch of full size 67/18 plate ford transits with the hill assist that locks fully on and needs a dealer visit to provide a permanent fix  * recently did a first year service on a ssangyong musso and found it to be as well built as the hilux  * the new cummings diesel engine in the hilux is a delight, easy to service and work around
  • Worst car you have ever owned or driven? 3 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Build quality didnt seem that great either, went to close the window and the switch separated itself from the door. (Renault influence here?) Not looking to insult the owners of such cars, just my experience with one.  At least the aircon worked..!

  • CLK to a Dacia? 7 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I haven't driven one yet, which may be its undoing, but just looking and poking around it seems okay. We would be looking at the little turbo petrol engine which seems to get good reviews in Renaults, and I'm not bothered about traffic light races, although I am sometimes tempted in the CLK. I will have had a fun year in the Merc but am worried about expensive failures (I've had a couple of cheap failures and have been lucky with those!).
  • new car needed....suggestions needed 19 Feb 2016 (Forum)
I currently drive a Renault Clio three door 2011reg. Whilst I really like my Clio its not practical for me with my job. Here is my situation; I am a part time nanny and look after kids of various ages and car seat needs.
  • 18yr old son passed Driving Test today - now what? 8 Nov 2009 (Forum)
, 3) drive on motorways and 4) learn how to get around himself without mum, dad or satnav to guide him. 1) Do we just start with him as a named (new) driver on mum's insurance which was where it was linked to during the "learning to drive" phase or start him off on his own? 2) Any thoughts... he drove his mum's X-reg Renault Clio and the instructor's new Yaris to learn in. PS were the findings of the Top Gear bit on young'uns buying a safe but dull Volvo the best route? 3) Ask the instructor to give him a couple of lessons on specific motorway driving - I've done enough of that myself so I can give him the basics (hope he listens!)
  • Lights; their correct use and maintenance. 14 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Correct me please if I'm mistaken, but in some European countries is it not mandatory to carry spare bulbs? I know Renault dealers sold them years ago, so why has this one excellent European initiative not been pursued? Question; how many of you check your lights on a regular basis?
  • How to buy a car 4 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Ok, so the time has come to flog the old workhorse and get something better, bigger and newer. Looking to buy a 2004 (or thereabouts) Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol or 1.9 Diesel. Due to lack of suitable cars for sale privately, I feel that my fate will lie in the hands of the west midlands 2nd hand motor trade. I know pretty much what I want, how much I should be spending, how much I can spend how I will finance it etc., but am looking for tips on how best to peel back all the salesman's pink fluffy dice such that I pay no more than a "fair" price.
  • Clio 02 Quickshift - Starting Problems 11 Apr 2007 (Forum)
He could find no fault with it and muttered that the quickshift gearbox migh have something to do with it ?!? I have been advised to take it to a Renault dealer. Called up and found that they charge £104 for a diagnostic alone. Any advise? Have anybody else had this problem? Although the car is from 2002 it had only done 15.000 miles when I bought it from Cargiant a couple of years ago - and by now, due to very limited use, it has only done 18.000.
  • TDCi judder around 2200-2700rpm 17 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I've tried cleaning the MAF with Isopropanol, which didn't cure it, but the hesitation feels almost like a MAF fault, as if it is telling the ECU that there is more air getting in than actually is and less fuel is consequently injected. Anyone got any suggestions for other potential causes? It's a 2002 Volvo S40 with a Renault DCi (surprise surprise) engine.

  • A French Speciality? 24 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Looking back there are a fair few: - Peugeot 205: sold until 1996, with its replacement, the 106, being introduced some 4 years prior. - Citroen AX: Sold for about 1 year after the Saxo was introduced - Renault 5: sold for 5 years after the Clios introduction - Peugeot 505: Ceased production in 1992, even though the production of 405s and 605 started in 1988 and 1989 respectively. There may be more which I?
  • Opinions sought 23 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Excluded BMW cos they just don't do it for me I'm afraid. What would YOU do? Please don't suggest a Mondeo/Renault/Vauxhall, been there, done that! I would say I'm open to other suggestions but we'll get bogged down in the relative merits of three cars that aren't even on my list if we're not careful. Having said that, if there are any blindingly obvious cars I should consider...

  • Old Fiesta diesel - dying? 9 Dec 2004 (Forum)
BTW, all the locals (French) swear that old Fiestas are a much better buy than their Peugeot/Citroen/Renault counterparts! Easily fixed, or do I put up with it? It cost me more than you might think to buy - used motors in France fetch higher prices than in the UK.
