  • Old large diesel estate 11 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Im NOT interested in performance whatsoever, so if its sluggish, not bothered ( I put that in because I know many people like punchy diesels and may assume I do, but not in this case ) I have already crossed the Merc estates off because they are not that economical, nor is the Peugeot 504. Also the Citroen CX doesnt appear because I owned one of them and it was a nightmare. Id also be interested in any petrol options that can get near the diesel economy, but they must run on unleaded. Thanks!
  • Volvo 850/V70 Diesel Auto - Good Buy? 2 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Quite liked the drive - very smooth and quick, but engine was very noisy even inside the car - much more so than my dads Citroen XM diesel. Can anyone on here comment on the reliability/durability of these cars - was this vehicle just a dud ? I notice most of the 850/V70 diesels advertised seem to have done huge mileages - most for sale about 120K+ - and they are still asking about £6K - are these worth buying or will they just be huge money-pits ?
  • Citoien C5 3yo - a good buy? 26 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Those HDI engines sound reliable, and other posters suggest that the suspension problems are cured by Citroen's fix. It seems that there are a few duff ones around, but www.carsurvey.org also shows some very satisfied owners. The 2005 JD Power survey (see http://tinyurl.com/8dtbs )gives it a satisfaction rating of 77.5, which is significantly down on the 1st-placed Honda Jazz at 88.1, but not much lower than a Ford Focus on 80.2 or a Mondeo on 79.7.
  • Bringing a used car back from France 30 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My wife and I live in London. I am Welsh, she is French. Her mother has given my wife her 1992 Citroen AX and we have processed the correct forms from the prefecture in Lyon, France for exporting the vehicle. It has temporary plates that we have been told can be on the car for a period of one month before we register the vehicle in the UK.

  • Two car family, new & old 9 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I am in the fortunate position of having 2 cars due to necessity with SWMBO going in one direction and me in another. I am doubly fortunate that one of these is a brand new Scenic with all the toys. The other is a Citroen Saxo 1.5d 1997 P Reg with 66,000 miles on the clock. The Scenic is great to drive, comfy, quiet, great engine etc. However, and this is the point of this thread (eventually) there is something raw and basic about the Saxo that makes it so enjoyable to drive.
  • Pug 306TD tacho sensor/wiring 30 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I had been experiencing intermittent problems with my tacho on my pug 306TD 1993, and on the advice of other threads, replaced the crankshaft TDC sensor. The replacement crankshaft sensor was sourced from gsf, and was for a citroen xantia 1.9td. I was told that this was a suitable replacement as engines were identical. Both parts looked much the same physically. However, replacing the crankshaft sensor gave me no tacho reading.
  • Best Car - Worst Car 23 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Starting with me Best cars I ever owned: Renault 11 GTL 3 Door 1985MY. Reliable, solid, drove well, covered over 40,000 miles in it 5 years. Citroen 2.0 16v Xantia VSX. Excellent drive, very fast and comfortable. I was sorry to see it go. Discovery 200 TDi (current) passes MOTs with style! Excellent drive, economic for a >2 Tonne 4X4. Worst car I ever had: Fiat Regata Weekend (Estate) 1989 G - so called because it took several weekends to try to figure out why the hand brake would never work.
  • Cyclist's paranoia? 8 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The noise of a small car at maximum revs coming from behind us made me take an extra glance in the mirror. It showed a green Citroen AX approaching at speed apparently coming straight at us. I braked and was pulling in behind Mrs H. when the car passed within a yard of me doing, I guess, over 60. I was so incensed with this lack of courtesy and the driver's disregard for Highway Code Rules 139, 188 that I gave him a V sign. 50 yards up the road, the AX slithered to a halt with 3 wheels locked.
  • messing about with engine air intake 21 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi guys, a question, which borders on being technical but I hope will not raise the objection of the back room minders if I write is here. I have a diesel Citroen AX, and I have realised that the noise and general smoothness of the engine is highly dependent on the outside air temperature, even when the engine itself is hot. If the air is warm the engine is very nice, quiet and much more smooth.
  • Cheap diesel needed 28 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I've read previous posts recommending Montegos and Maestros but I'd rather get something a bit newer looking. Most people I know recommend Citroens and Peugeots but I'm worried about reliability and parts costs also some of the prices seem a bit on the high side. On Autotrader's website there are a number of Rover 218/ 418 diesels and turbo diesels eg M plate 218 TD with 130k and 7 months ticket for £600.
  • Corolla Carb Question for Tune Up Boys 28 Nov 2002 (Forum)
So, I'm wondering if this is work that I need to go to a Toyota main dealer for, or can I entrust it to my local friendly independent (who is a Citroen specialist - I've used him for years and have been unable to track down a local Toyota independent)? Clearly I can ask him if he thinks he's got the necessary kit and info, but I thought I'd ask here first. maybe the Tune-Up guys can offer an opinion - Is this the type of job that a general motor engineer can handle or is it too specialized?
  • 2008 Motorshow- Good Bad and Ugly 30 Jul 2008 (Forum)
On to the cars, although we missed a lot of stands found a lot of noticeable things on the ones we did see. Biggest revelation had to be the Citroen C5. Sat in the tourer, and whilst it was the top of the range model, it felt very very special. The interior felt more like something out of a prestige german executive model, not a mainstream fleet model.
  • DS 5 - Smoke from DS DS5 Diesel engine after a short run 16 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Does it just need a good run (which I was planning to do tomorrow) or does it need a visit to the Citroen garage before I do any damage?   Thanks in advance

  • VW Passat/ Skoda Superb - VW 1.6 and 2.0 TDI Reliability? 9 Oct 2015 (Forum)
As u maybe remember few months ago i sold my Honda CR-V (2012) becouse in this period we dont need a bigger car, and we can survive using our secound car Citroen C3 1.4 HDI (2011). Im not planning to buy a new car right now, but still i checked what is offered on the market (for brand new cars).    Of course i went first to check new Honda CR-V, but as i can see its too expensive (33000 eur here).
  • Red light on ? Keep driving ... 7 Jan 2009 (Forum)
My son's Citroen AX threw its alternator belt while he was taking his g/f home last night. As far as I can gather from a morose 19 y.o. teenager, the events were as follows; a small sharp noise comes from the engine, simultaneously the lights dim and the battery light comes on; son stops car and phones g/f's stepdad to shepherd him to g/f's house (by this time some 10 miles away); son and g/f listen to radio until stepdad arrives; car starts reluctantly and covers nearly 8 miles until lights go to candle mode and engine stops; g/f's stepdad arrives, kicks tyre and they abandon the AX and travel to g/f's house, stepdad slagging off Citroens in general during the journey; son phones me to ask if he still has recovery service, I explain that he is part of the family's pay and reclaim GEM recovery service, something he has known about for 18 months; son goes silent for a long time and then says he has £6 in his bank account and the GEM membership card is in the car; before I go all sarcastic and congratulate him, Mrs H chimes in and says I should go and recover him, I ask what the point of paying for GEM mebership is if I have to turn to on a freezing night with a tin of Guiness consumed and rescue his nibs; having just put a new cat and lambda probe on the car, I insist that no attempt is made to start the car, even with the spare belt (under the boot carpet) fitted; I leave Mrs H and son to sort out the finances and irritably pour a Scotch; Mrs H says if I don't want the car started, I should go and supervise the recovery; I refuse politely; I warm to my subject and criticise son's lack of organisation and expectation that everything will be done for him, quoting the time I bodged a fuel pump diaphragm with a piece of plastic bag by the side of the road on my VW Beetle, and other exaggerated feats of mechanical ingenuity; Mrs H's eyes glaze over, she may have heard this one before; an hour later the car arrives on the back of a low-loader, with the key turned to free the steering, there is barely enough juice to light the battery light; the extremely helpful recovery driver and I push the car to where I can connect the battery charger while son makes phone call to person unknown; the battery charger reports that it's giving 8+ amps and I leave it to cook overnight.
