passat golf octavia fabia a4 focus - £4K estate dilemma 31 Jul 2011 (Forum)
With £4K then the newest Golfs and Fabias I can find are 2006 for cars with around 100K miles on them. Passats and A4s tend to be older for that money. I worry that the Fabia is more a super-mini estate and with the curvy tailgate on it it won't offer enough storage space. It looks like I can buy a much newer Focus for the same money - there are 2007 TDCis with around 80-90K on them. Much as a I love the VAG cars, I reckon I can pick up a newer Ford for the same money. -
Skoda Fabia - engine stutter and high oil use 8 Jan 2011 (Forum)
That said I have toyed with various theories including, sticky valves, faulty ECU, bad electrical joint, radio frequency interference from passing mini-cabs/public service vehicles blitzing the ECUs working values. prompting a reset etc. Any ideas ? Nothing appears to show on VAG COM diagnosis. Also, the engine started consuming oil from 30,000 miles onwards. -
Toyota Yaris II/Vitz (2006 - ) - Knife edge decision: Yaris vs. i20 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I could really do with some advice and a reality check as I'm torn between two options for buying a new car. I'm after a cheap but decent new/nearly super-mini for around-town driving and occasional longer motorway trips; anticipating a yearly mileage of around 7k. I'm coming from a '99 Mazda MX-5 which while very fun to drive is becoming increasingly impractical, expensive and has depreciated faster than I've been paying it off. -
Rover 75 (1999 - 2005) - 04 2 Have I found a "Tracker" in my used car ?? 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
When I removed the facia trim this afternoon, I was surprised to see a big black box with multiple connections with the markings "EagleEye" and "Mini Vehicle Unit" and a large black relay. At least two of these connections appear to be co-ax and one has a loom with a tied-up PC RS232 type serial cable and there is an Ethernet network socket too !!. -
Rat runs, main routes and traffic obstruction 31 May 2009 (Forum)
He refused to stop off for a drink at my favoured dive in Kentish Town and suggested we stop at his favourite dive in the Portobello Road, in our home district. I agreed and we set off, he in his partner's MINI and I in my rough old Escort. I got to the pub, which was crowded. He wasn't there yet. They had run out of my favourite tipple so I had to have Young's ordinaire, the next best thing. The staff took ages to get to me and I got us both a pint. -
Main dealer rip off. Can you better this? 7 May 2009 (Forum)
No history of bulbs blowing but his comment justified checking electrics for said cost). My niece took her mini in to have a fault fixed under warranty. The fault was fixed (cooling fan) no problem but she was given a bill for £140 (may have been £180 not sure). This was because the dealer changed the brake fluid! -

Subaru Impreza III (2008 -) - 1000+km in new Impreza 22 Oct 2007 (Forum)
This model has electric PAS and unfortunately has that slightly wooden feeling that many of these systems have - it feels a bit like a BMW Mini in that respect, to be honest. Not nearly as nice as the steering of the old car. Japanese roads are very smooth and well graded - so its hard to comment on the ride as it would be experienced in UK. -
Fun practical used car for £6-8k 14 May 2007 (Forum)
I really like the look of the Hyundai Coupe but am not convinced they're very good to drive. I'm not keen on the new MINI and don't see myself as a BMW driver, but would still like plenty of toys for the money (choice between a high-spec Mondeo and a poverty-spec BMW or Audi and I'd go for the Mondeo straight away; likewise I'd tend to go for a Seat Leon rather than VW Golf). -
Seat adjustment advice 4 Mar 2007 (Forum)
It may be just the car is too small, although in theory for cars 'one size fits all' it would be easier if I was only 5-7'' etc. The only car I remember that was similar was an original Mini back in the 80's where you always had a hunched driving position. Reason for all this is I have got some back pain between my shoulder blades, feels like my spine is seizing up (2 hours per day commute) and wanted to get it sorted. -
Suzuki Swfit at 5000 miles & 7 months 30 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Mini-review on the Suzuki Swift 1.5GLX I bought for my sister back in May 2006. The car has now done 5000 miles. I drove it recently and also drove it for its first 500 miles back in May. Sister has been highly delighted with the car. -
Golf Mk 5 Buying Decision 10 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I currently run a Golf TDI 130 mark 4 model. I bought it new two and a half years ago as an EU import, after I had to hurriedly reject a new Mini Cooper. The Golf has been faultlessly reliable, there are no squeaks or rattles and the engine is smoother and zippier than ever. Running in took a while though, exclusive use of Shell Diesel and 18 mile part motorway commute to work probably helped.
