  • This or that car 17 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Dear John I wish to change my BMW 318i automatic for a new car which I hope to keep for a number of years. My priorities are safety, comfort and of course reliability with reasonably good performance. I prefer an automatic and I have reduced my list to a choice between a Lexus IS200 and a VolvoS60 both 2 litre.

  • Is it possible? 4 Apr 2002 (Forum)
(obviously talking old banger for occasional 2nd car use here) Two 30-something drivers, both max no claims, car garaged overnight, good area, no DIY servicing.... My other car is a BMW etc (and sorry, fellow Backroomers, to have been away so long)
  • Source of error codes? 5 Mar 2002 (Forum)
While talking to the owner he mentioned that he was greatly obstructed by the unavailability of, in particular, BMW error codes. I seem to recall having read that the car makers were now obliged, by a European competition directive, to make this information available. In any case, as things are now, little secrets like these are usually compromised.
  • cars up north. 23 Oct 2001 (Forum)
i think everyone should know how cheap cars are up north, in the paper you can buy a 1989 renault 5, with FSH, 54000 miles, tax and test, all for £200. what about the 1986 bmw 525i, that went at the local auction, FSH, 85000 miles, tax and test, it went for only £80. a 55000 mile pug 205, from 1987, with FSH, went for £70.
  • bmw 1 series m sport convertible - Professional valet in London or home counties? 16 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Firstly I am not a car "nut" or know anything at all about what goes on under the bonnet or the least bit technical or generally car savvy. So bear with me!! I am 95% sure I will be purchasing a used car (BMW 1 series M sport convertible) this week, subject to AA inspection. Car is from a private seller and I viewed it yesterday. I have also previously viewed 2 other examples at independent garages, which although didn't work out, I was particularly impressed by how they were presented - how I would describe as showroom finish, exterior and interior, scrupulously clean etc and does add a certain "wow" factor.
  • BMW 535/Honda CRV/Volvo 40 - Acquiring a fleet of cars - need to let one go 14 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Nice looking car, nice comfortable heated seats but not as roomy as the CRV. Used value approx £1200. (3)BMW 535i auto (1998) 100K miles, goes like a dream but SORN off-road at present, so a bit of a pain to keep charged-up. Lovely to drive, but doesn't go in snow, and doors stick closed in cold weather and then won't close properly (is there a simple fix for this?).
  • BMW 3-Series E36 Compact (1994 - 2001) - 316 overheating problems 3 Nov 2008 (Forum)

  • 1986 BMW 318i Starter Motor (E30) 3 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I've just acquired a 1986 'D' black BMW 318i 2 dr which has covered 167,000 (and the engine's still as sweet as the day it was new) although it's highly unlikely to get through the next MOT without a lot of work on the sills and wheel arches and so the friends of ours who have given it to me (they've had it for 12 years and spent a lot of money on it (including over £1,000 for a respray about 10 years ago) have just gone and bought a 1998 'R' 318iS coupe which was advertised in a local garage to complement the wife's 02 registered Clio Extreme as the husband had the 318i (although originally they only had the 318i) The 318i that I've been given has 4 good tyres and is in perfect condition apart from the sills rusting through and the doors are starting to go and also the wheelarches and back bumper so as it all mounts up to more than the vehicles worth they decided to give it to me as they loved that car to bits and couldn't bear the thought of it being scrapped.
  • Buying a Lemon-Your Worst Experience? 26 Jan 2003 (Forum)
They said though that the car was still on their database and had been serviced by other BMW dealerships, the last one being about 15 months ago at 107k miles. Upon learning this I went back to the supplying dealer to cancel the deal but he had already sold my previous car on and seemed as distraught as I was.
  • BMW 2 Series Active Tourer - A weekend test drive in a BMW 225xe plug-in hybrid 22 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Long version:  I thought I’d share my impressions of the BMW 225xe plug-in hybrid I’ve just had for an extended test drive for the past couple of days.   I wanted to evaluate one because the contract hire on my current company Volvo V60 D4 is up in July, and plug-in-hybrids currently offer a big saving in BIK tax compared with diesel or petrol equivalents.
  • BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - 325d 2nd Impression 24 Apr 2008 (Forum)
It would only have cost them a pittance to fit decent speakers as standard. Such cheap skating devalues the BMW brand, I think. On the plus side they don't look too difficult to replace with decent units. Well, from the face plates anyway. Initial impressions prove to be hopelessly optimistic. After two weeks of forum surfing - including correspondence with BMW UK - I have still not found a source for plug compatible upgrades.

I can see how it can be 50/50 but 60/40 is challenging my brain even if it is a child. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/bmw-lawyers-buckinghamshire-oxfordshire-milton-keynes-b1092468.html Edit: sorry Xilano, I didn't realised there is an earlier thread slready, please feel free to delete.

  • 2018 2.2d - Mazda6 diesels 1 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I do around 25-30k a year so the car will be with me until at least the 150k mark. I am well aware of the dpf issues and have suffered badly with them on a BMW. But for the mileage and usage is it such a bad bet for me??
  • ALL - MOT 9 May 2019 (Forum)
What nonsense is this to be telling people. Probably paying the dealer full price for the MOT.   The local BMW dealer here contracts out their MOTs to  another garage so your precious car is driven across town for its test.
  • Car to seat 5 adults for 150m commute 18 Sep 2016 (Forum)
I now share a lift with 4 other people we drive one day each. My bmw 4 series only has 4 seats so it looks like getting a different car. Can anyone reccommend a suitable car? The only one I like is the old shape Jag XJ tdvi possibly a 2007 shape but I'm not too sure what the reliability is like.
