Need advice buying a car 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
So I have approx 3.5K to spend, need something with 4 doors, not high insurance, not a massive engine that will cost a small fortune to run, something that isn't expensive parts wise, I do about 10 miles a day, just running to work and back, don't tend to long journeys. Any advice would be helpful as I have been trawlling autotrader and just don't know what is good to buy and what is best avoided. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2005 2.0 diesel - engine fault 2 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I really need some help from people who know about Ford Mondeo diesel engines. I have a 2005 Mondeo on which the warranty runs out in March. The car has had a new fuel pump under warranty. Sometimes the car still runs badly and goes into limp mode. The car has been at the dealer and they have tried to recode an injector but say that this has failed and a new injector will need to be fitted. -
Used diesels on veggie oil..buy or not? 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Look if i paid a couple of hundred quid for a fairly simple old fashioned indirect diesel then if it runs ok on the muck, why not, if it blows up on 6 months i'm probably in pocket, but i will not be taking the risk of having someone else's experiment on my hands. In fact my old merc indy is adamant on having nothing to do with this mazola thing and his opinion is good enough for me. -
MPG - what to believe and what to buy? 28 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Possibly looking at changing my Megane 225 for something more economical to run and insure/tax as I am likely to be increasing monthly mileage quite a lot from about 200 to around 700 miles a month just commuting. I always owned the 225 on the basis of lowish mileage and mainly a 'fun' car. -
BMW 3 Series Touring 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have always liked the look of these, rather than the normal coupe/saloon version. However, I don't really know much about them and would value any advice. My intention would be to run one for 3-5 years / 50-75k miles. I would be spending around 6K. Are they a reasonable prospect at this price or is it all image? Which engine would be best, etc? What I am getting at is the question of whether a 3 Series Touring is a viable and reasonable proposition when compared to a straight, run-of-the-mill, family car. -
Oil Contamination Problem-Renault Scenic 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Although it is not as bad as it first was, I am still getting oil contamination into the header tank, but only at full running temperature and only after half an hour of running. I asked an old mate at Renault who's been in the trade 35 years whether it could be a crack in the block. He said he'd never heard of it over his 35 years in the trade. -
Peugeot 406 diesel - mass air flow meter 22 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Whilst I know a bit about petrol engines diesels are very much an unknown quanitiy. At the moment the car is running ok but but I do get the impression of a lack of pick up as I accelerate. I also feel that I could probably run it as it is for a while but ultimately could damage the turbo etc The manual doesn't give too much info on the mass air flow meter but from the detail I could make a guess at its use however I would appreciate some basic info from yourselves. -
Vauxhall Astra - ECU orange light 12 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The first problem is the instumental panel orange warning light (engine block symbol) is now on continuosly with the engine running. The engine is quite 'chuggy' at idle and seems prone towards running hot (fan cutting in more often even with January temps). The engine starts fine and there is no noticeable loss of power. I have heard horror stories of dealers reading fault codes and then causing the customer to spend successive big cheques progressing through a list of possible causes rather than achieving a technically accurate and cost effective diagnosis. -
Daytime Running Lights 1 Jan 2007 (Forum)
It's definately going to happen I think. I agree, it's another step towards removal of human decision-making. I usually turn mine on on twisty country... -
Volvo 850 GLT 20 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Was looking at a 1996 automatic volvo 850 GLT. When i started it up the engine was running fine. The 'lamba' light on the dashboard was on. Does this mean it is time to replace the sensor or is the sensor faulty. have been told that after so many miles the light comes on to say service it or replace it. -
Golf Mk3 Ignition info 25 Oct 2006 (Forum)
All is now rectified, but take heed, it seems, if your Golf 3 is 9+ years old the engine will not start or run without a working CI sensor. -
Rover 414 Cuts out 31 Aug 2006 (Forum)
If you tap the accelerator the revs dip, and if you press it enough it will stall. Leaving the engine running for a while, or turning off and re-starting it straight away, doesn't cure it. It needs to be left off for a minute or two before restarting and then it's fine - will revv up and drive off. When it is not playing silly beggars it runs well. -
Vectra 2.0Di Turbo hose blew off. 3 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Does anyone know if these to faults are linked in anyway and do you think that there may be a further fault that blew the turbo hose off. It was quite oily by the EGR but always has been, and it has been running fine up to that point. thanks, Carl -
tempted to drive into car in front 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
i was wondering where does one stand if someone cuts you up and slams his brakes on. since he has taken up your braking distance you would probably run into him. who is at fault? -
Polo GT '91 again 24 Oct 2005 (Forum)

Bright ideas please 3.5T van 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
P junior rides for a KIDS motorcycle display team and we cart all the gear (Jump ramps, bikes, spares) around in a 7.5t IVECO, trouble is this is rapidly approaching the end of its useful life and becoming v expensive to run Repairs/Insurance/Diesel etc etc, plus its not very popular on the driving rota ! Therefore we have thought about downsizing to a 3.5t van which if we make the Mums and Dads tow the larger bikes should be plenty large enough and hopefully cheaper to run, easier to find and a bit more popular to drive - Mums too. -
Poss. electrical fault with M Reg Astra 3 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Got to our destination and halfway back when the airbag light came on as before, temp & fuel gauges re-set. Bit further down the road the engine warning light flickered on and off and the engine started to run a bit roughly - however this was all for only a few seconds and car started running perfectly normally again, but the airbag light stayed on and fuel & temp gauges were still on zero. Any suggestions before I pop to the garage for another huge bill. -

Insurance groups + which car? 11 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Yaris seemed a bit cramped, and comments on the ride in the Jazz puts me off. Any other ideas? I'm happy to buy up to 1 year old - but need to keep the running costs low. Any help appreciated.
