  • Classics spotted in the classifieds 20 Oct 2011 (News)
Porsche 911 Carrera 2 - £17,995 The 964 series of 911 is extremely desirable, with the traditional Porsche layout of rear mounted aircooled engine and rear wheel drive. The iconic shape barely differs from the first generation 911 and this Targa model benefits from a removable hard top. It’s covered more than 110,000 miles but the engine was rebuilt in 2010, and since then it’s covered 5858 miles, which should put minds at rest when it comes to expensive bills coming up.

  • Haynes Book of the Lotus Elise 16 Jul 2009 (News)
Innovative in its extruded and bonded aluminium construction, thrilling to drive, yet surprisingly affordable and usable, the Elise has become a legend in its own lifetime for its mixture of track-day ability and accessible sports car fun on the road. Conceived as a plaything, the ground-breaking Lotus captured buyers' imaginations and forced the hand of its maker into turning the Elise into a full production model, one that went on to spawn the extreme, track- focused 340R, Exige and 2-Eleven, as well as the more comfort- orientated 111S and Europa plus the badge-engineered Opel Speedster, Vauxhall VX220 and electric Tesla Roadster.
  • Weak Sterling Fuels Sales to Ireland 14 Jan 2009 (News)
    * One customer who has certainly benefitted from the huge cross-border savings is Michael Coplen from Mullingar in County West Meath, about a 50-mile drive from Dublin. After doing an internet search for Motorpoint on Google in December, he found the car he was looking for, namely an 08 Reg VW Passat 1.9 TDI Bluemotion, for only 10,000 Euros, more than half the price of the same model from his local dealer in Southern Ireland.

I choose the Saab 9-3 after seeing it in a magazine advert.

Nissan had new variations of its TIIDA B sector car and Intima prototype of the new Teana. Ford showed a 4-door Verve, to be built in Thailand in 2009, but only pre-facelift Focus IIs.

  • Bargains Bought, Despite Auction Frenzy Today 21 Sep 2005 (News)
£8,700 for a 3 year old 42k mile 2002/52 Golf TDI PD 130 can only be justified because the market still regards it as a car that will make them look better than being seen driving a Ford. Badge is everything. Which is why a 34k mile 2003/52 Focus TCCI 115 Zetec sold for £2,000 less. On the other hand, despite the VW on the front, a 48k mile 02 reg Passat TDI PS 100 sold for a sensible £5,800.
  • Mini Adventure at Auction Today 7 Feb 2005 (News)
And the answer had to be, unless you know someone who wants a really nice original Mini, you end up driving around in it. In direct contrast, new MINIs aren’t making quite as much as they were. There was a bit of a surplus in the Leaseplan section: no less than five 51 reg Coopers, all in metallic racing green and white with white wheels.
  • X3 Makes £39k at Top Car Today 12 Jul 2004 (News)
It sold for exactly £38,000, plus trade buyer’s premium, from which we can deduce that X3s are already priced at the maximum the market will pay so there are no overs to be taken out of them. Meanwhile, the more luxurious old-shape X5s (without the new X drive system) are starting to become better value. A 40k mile 2002/52 reg 3.0 Sport manual with leather but no satnav sold for £29,300 and a 30k mile 2002/52 3.0i auto with leather but not a Sport and on standard wheels bid to £27,300.
  • Big Stuff at Blackbushe Today 23 Jan 2004 (News)
If you’re in the market for a car you’ll still be able to pick it up cheaper at auction than from a retail site, whatever they paid for it back in November. My pal was after a 3-Series automatic for his wife who can’t drive the MINI Cooper he bought her for Christmas. (If anyone wants a heavily loaded 51 reg Cooper, green with white bonnet stripes and 58k miles for less than £10k, e-mail me and I’ll put you in touch.)
  • Yaris For Less Than £3k at Auction Today 10 Sep 2003 (News)
On the other hand, there were some cheapies. One bidder overcame his or her embarrassment to drive away in a blue and pink 51k mile 96N Suzuki X90 for £1,700. £6,100 wasn’t too much to pay for a 3k mile 2002/51 Suzuki Jimny 1.3 JLX hardtop auto (find another); £2,675 was far from crazy for an 89k mile 96N Frontera 2.2 16v 5-door; and £1,950 wasn’t bad for a 153k mile 97R ex-police Volvo S70 T5 automatic.
