  A 13k mile 2004/54 reg Golf V 2.0GT TDI sold for £13,600, an 89k mile 2003/52 Audi A2 1.4TDI with just two service stamps sold for £5,900, a 13k mile 2002/52 Mazda MX5 1.8 on steel wheels sold for £8,300 and in the Motability section a 29k mile 02 reg Focus 1.6 Zetec auto with Climate sold for £4,500 and a 2k mile 2004/54 C-Max 1.6TDCI Zetec CVT sold for £9,800, but a 13k mile 2004/54 Daewoo Kalos 1.4SX auto (the softest riding small hatchback) stuck at £4,350provisional. Probably best drive-away of the day was a 76k mile 2001/51 Astra 1.7 LS DTI estate, sold for £2,650. Badge is everything. Which is why a 34k mile 2003/52 Focus TCCI 115 Zetec sold for £2,000 less. On the other hand, despite the VW on the front, a 48k mile 02 reg Passat TDI PS 100 sold for a sensible £5,800.

  It sold for exactly £38,000, plus trade buyer’s premium, from which we can deduce that X3s are already priced at the maximum the market will pay so there are no overs to be taken out of them. Meanwhile, the more luxurious old-shape X5s (without the new X drive system) are starting to become better value. A 40k mile 2002/52 reg 3.0 Sport manual with leather but no satnav sold for £29,300 and a 30k mile 2002/52 3.0i auto with leather but not a Sport and on standard wheels bid to £27,300.

  If you’re in the market for a car you’ll still be able to pick it up cheaper at auction than from a retail site, whatever they paid for it back in November. My pal was after a 3-Series automatic for his wife who can’t drive the MINI Cooper he bought her for Christmas.
