  • On-road drag racing... 26 Mar 2002 (Forum)
From a local newspaper: A young Phoenix man and his passenger died horrific deaths on Sunday when his car burst into flames in a crash which police say was linked to drag racing. Leon Jagesur and a young woman, who has not been identified, were burnt beyond recognition on the M19 leading to Quarry Road early on Sunday.

Two door Orion, Ford or VW badge and often with a detuned VW 1800 GTi motor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Verona I think Honda miss a trick by not importing this wee belter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S660 A tough but cheap go anywhere off-reader for less than most city cars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lada_Niva The car to survive the apocalypse. https://www.toyota.com.au/landcruiser-70 This would do wonders for VW’s rather staid image in the UK. https://drivetribe.com/p/vw-saveiro-2020-its-a-little-pickup-PRVoQlOlT_WESBmEGGNVcA Affordable fun for young drivers. Only 63bhp but it looks mad. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2015-suzuki-alto-turbo-rs-is-pocket-racer-from-japan-video-photo-gallery-93149.html I think Dacia miss out of a lot of sales by not offering the Dokker MPV, Van and pickup in the UK.
  • Honda Accord - 2004 Accord v 2008 Mondeo mk 4 24 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I've heard good things about the revised Ford 2L Duratec HE engines once they fixed the swirl flaps and similarly good things about the Honda 2.4L K24A series engines. I should note that I'm a young driver so the insurance is ~1.5-2x more for the Honda. The 2004 Honda Accord 2.4L i-VTEC Executive is up for £2.7k, automatic, petrol, has had 1 owner, 85k miles and is at a (seemingly) reputable dealer.
  • New car for Mother-in-Law 14 May 2008 (Forum)
Criteria are (not very exciting I'm afraid) * Automatic * Easy to drive and park, she's a fairly tentative driver * Compact, but enough space to carry her 3 young grandchildren, so 3 proper rear seatbelts very handy, and 5 doors * Easy to get in and out of, she's not very nimble these days * Low-maintenance, reliable, hassle-free * She does a few motorway miles, so must be able to cope out of town The following do not matter!

I indicated by use of the horn his stupidity and lack of knowledge of Highway code. Some 200 yards later I was stopped by a another young fool in a Panda car who proceeded to berate me for using my horn. As he must have seen the incident he took the option of berating me rather than pursuing the driver who had caused the incident. Victim 1 Perpetrator 0 Additionally I pick up a passenger from opposite a well-known food store in Kingston Park.
  • VW Golf MK6 2.0 TDI GT Clutch Slip 28 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I know I might be jumping the gun a bit but don't want to go to the dealer unarmed if they say it's my fault.  We're both good drivers, I drive for a living and have done several advanced courses and my wife drives nice and steady. We did 180k in our last MK4 TDI with no issues and have covered 100s of thousands of miles in our cars without clutch issues.
  • Nissan Qashqai (2007 - ) - good choice-opinions/alternives please 19 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Insurance. I did have an altercation about 5 and a half years ago found against me. My husband is a new driver (30 this year, passed test 4 yrs ago, with pass plus if that counts). We've been paying just under £800 a year for the insurance, I'd not really like to go over that Fuel: I have no idea what to go for here.
  • Court Summons for Parking Offence 18 Nov 2007 (Forum)
We stopped to offer directions (we live in an area of scattered farmhouses and often see people looking lost) they handed me a letter containing an NIP. I had to explain to my two young kids that I wasn't being arrested The NIP simply asked me to confirm if I was the driver at the time of the offence. I completed it and posted it off in good time. Now I face a court appearance with a potential for a fine and already there are £35 costs against me.
  • Catastrophic Brake failure 6 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I was unable to avoid another motorist on the roundabout struck her a glancing blow to the offside door and wing and careered off at speed down a side road and into a metal post. The airbag inflated and the car is now a write off. Neither the other driver was injured nor myself but I am now faced with a fault claim on my insurance history and likely increased premia. I need to source a new car quickly and until the insurance company settle my wife deos not have a car as no courtesy car is available as the car will be written off.
  • Best legal advice 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Whilst waiting for the arrival of my brother-in-law to arrive and make arrangements to have my undrivable car removed from the scene I was asked by the attending officer sit in his police car. His colleague was a very young policewoman. I got in the back of the car whereupon the young woman started to aggressively question me as to my driving speed, distances, weather, the other driver?s speed etc. etc. etc. each question came as bullet out of a gun.
  • Peugeot 307 - Car mounts pavement, Reg photo, Police No Action 8 May 2014 (Forum)
The driver left the pavement and returned to the road once he had negotiated the temporary 'hold up' and narrowly avoiding a collision with the Family of four waiting on the pavement, at the bus stop, outside the Woodmans Arms.
  • Drink and Drug Drive Campaign 11 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Leicestershire's campaign supports the national Think! campaign - with brand new radio, internet and in-pub advertising - to remind drivers, and young men in particular: If you get caught drink driving you'll be processed like any other criminal. The consequences of being caught drinking and driving include: * You WILL be arrested, taken to a police station and charged. * You WILL receive a drink drive conviction and a criminal record. * You WILL receive a minimum 12-month driving ban. * You COULD be fined up to £5,000. * You COULD go to prison for up to six months. * You COULD lose your job or miss out on future jobs. * You WILL have higher insurance costs. * You WILL have to explain yourself to family, friends and your partner The Department for Transport has also funded new digital breath testing equipment which will be used by many forces, including Leicestershire.
  • 3 x idiots - 1 x unfortunate 22 Feb 2005 (Forum)
There was much screaching of tyres and this fool missed being wiped out by about 8 - 10 feet as the driver of the on coming vehilce did not react as soon as (s)he might have. He dived towards the pavement where he thought it would be amusing to roll around acting like the car had actually hit him, as his mates cheered and aplauded.
  • 'Death Trap' 22 Aug 2001 (Forum)
OK, so the person overtaking is likely to be exceeding the speed limit but it's the fact they aren't overtaking in a safe manner that's the real problem and cause of accidents. But often it's because drivers in the line tailgate making it difficult to pull back in, that you chance another couple of cars.... Further up the road it's now 40 mph due to recent building of big housing estates and subsequent rise in young kids and general traffic.
  • BMW 3 Series Convertible - Lent uninsured friend my car to fix but crashed it 30 Jul 2019 (Forum)
He is also claiming that it was my negligence that I gave him the car and that he made a mistake when was young and should be forgiven, I suspect he is trying to avoid any culpability of the incident. I have contacted solicitors about the matter and they have argued that it is my word against his but I have his conviction in my favour.
  • peugeot 107 - how much to haggle for <1 year old city car 16 Nov 2012 (Forum)
the destination and nature of his new job necessitated the ability to be mobile. seeing as he is a new licence holder, young, male and lives in a ghetto area (......east london)  the choice in cars which would not be stupidly expensive to insure was very limited - he also wanted something that would not depreciate so much + has free congestion charge access.
  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - Crash 22 Apr 2008 (Forum)
we are both 20 and have been driving carefully for 2 and 3 years respectively and i feel we may lose our no claims over this. i dont think it is fair that because i am a young driver people assume i was speeding. she was driving a brand new scenic which was a mobility car. hope i have explained it properly.
  • which drivers' car for commute? 25 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I don't like the 32mpg fuel economy and repair bills! We tend to drive in Mondeo at weekends and on holiday because it is bigger for our young family, but apart from my personal driving pleasure it makes no sense for me to have the larger car from day to day. The first assumption that I'm willing to have challenged is that both cars should be changed as soon as funds allow.
  • VW Polo 2003 Automatic Transmission - Advice on buying a used car 29 Dec 2024 (Forum)
I don’t know much about cars, and I bought this one to get more confident driving and just to get from point A to B. I’m still a young driver, and so I can’t really afford to do too many repairs, and I feel this is unwarranted especially since its only been a week since I bought it. I even have a photo that shows the dash lights on, and the mileage at 89994 (it was 89974 at its last MOT done this month before I bought it).
  • A Lovely "Day" Trip to Scarborough 11 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I think we only saw the sea a couple of times but the beautiful villages we drove through and the moorland scenery more than made up for that omission. The downside to this tale, poor young Steve, who is to drive the BMW, when he gets his licence, will have to pay £3000 insurance, on a £450 car. Good job he's honest or there would be another uninsured driver on the roads. Makes it good to be alive, doesn't it?
