  • Mercedes ML250 - Help....Fuel System Needs Replacing? 14 Nov 2014 (Forum)
The car has been in to the main dealer 4 times, they have tried various things but failed to find the problem. They have just rang to say there are iron-filings in the fuel, this is caused by the some part of the fuel system (pump?) breaking up and must have been due to a mis-fuel (i.e. I’ve put petrol in a diesel engine) and a lack of lubrication. They say this is the cause of the stalling and the Mercedes warranty is obviously therefore invalid.
  • Wrong oil again!! 5 Mar 2001 (Forum)
This caused the hydraulic lifters to jack open the valves causing loss of compression. This was aggravated by using supermarket fuel which I suspect was gumming up the valves. I flushed the engine and refilled with a semi-synthetic 5W/30 finished off with a dose of fuel treatment in the tank and all now seems to be improving.
  • Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - Focus 1.6 TDCi or 1.8 TDCi 27 Feb 2009 (Forum)
We are looking to source through Ford Direct again. I fancy the Focus 3 Titanium Estate in Tango Orange! Greys and blues seem to show those supermarket scratches. Ford Direct seem to have mostly Titanium 1.8 TDCi's and 2.0 petrols, few 1.6 diesels or petrols. I quite like the thought of the diesel due to much better fuel economy and cheaper tax.
  • Forte gas treatment / sticking valves. 30 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Also could you give me an idea of how much it costs? I don't understand why it is supplied only by garages, how difficult can it be to pour it into a fuel tank.
  • Pinking Corolla 27 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I only have one problem with the car. For some reason it is pinking. I change gears at the right time and I avoid Supermarket fuel. The car is due for its 30k service - but this doesnt include plugs etc. Any ideas what could be causing the pinking and how to cure it ? It does it most of the time, not only when going up hill.
  • Coking - today's DT 24 Feb 2002 (Forum)
However haven't used anything to cure/prevent apart from using only Shell petrol, this has cured the problem, interestingly filled up with supermarket fuel the other day (as nearly ran out couldn't make to a Shell station) and occasionally would have smoke behind when changing up. Can I use Shell Optimax in my 1990 Subaru Justy GLII 4wd 1189 cc (carbed model) or will it be bad for it/a waste of money?
  • In the Can 13 Aug 2001 (Forum)
For the past 8 or 9 years I have filled up a few cans every other weekend to top up the motorbikes each day, since bike tanks only give a range of 150 miles or so and it is a pain to stop every day at a garage to fill up. Yesterday the pump attendant at our supermarket informed me that they had been visited by a jobsworth from the local Trading Standards who told them that it was only permitted for customers to fill two cans at a time. Whilst I know that there are limits on storing fuel, this is the first I have heard of limits on the sale.
  • Petrol Head 6 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Petrol addict banned from shops: A man with an addiction to sniffing petrol has been banned from every Asda store after being caught cutting fuel pump pipes. Brian Taylor, 36, has also been banned from going within 15 metres of any filling station on Teesside. Taylor terrorised supermarket staff and customers after sniffing petrol and cutting pipes at Asda in the South Bank area and dancing around the forecourt.

  • Rover 420 SDI 2 litre turbo diesel fault 31 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Interestingly, if the engine is turned off for a short period (say 5 mins) after even just a mile or two from cold, it runs perfectly when re-started. The coolant temperature sensor, fuel filter and the glow plugs have been renewed. I only use Shell diesel fuel, never supermarket products. Any ideas? Thank you,

  • ford mondeo III tdci - Injector issues - what to look out for 10 Sep 2012 (Forum)
If so what signs do I look out for on them? (2) I have heard the injector issue is down to the quality of fuel being used, so no using supermarket diesel then ? Thanks

  • Filling Up in France 12 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Follow up to a point raised in Huw’s Boulogne thread. Returned last week from holiday in France where we found it becoming difficult to access supermarket fuel. Around Gex (Ain) neither Carrefour nor Intermarche any longer have a cashier. All pumps are card only 24/7. No doubt the same in other areas, particularly away from the main tourist centres.

  • Astra G 1.6 8v estate - The cost of motoring 12 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Cost of depreciation of the 1st was 11p/mile, the 2nd was 12.57p/mile. The first averaged 40.1mpg and cost 9p/mile for fuel, the second did 38.6mpg and cost 12p/mile. The first cost 8p/mile for everything else, the 2nd cost 12p/mile. Total cost of the 1st was 27.5p/mile, the 2nd was 36.5p/mile. One of the surprises for me was to realise how little the fuel cost, compared to everything else.
  • BMW 5-Series E60 - Diesel Dilemma 29 Mar 2010 (Forum)
My wife nor my garage can discern my problem!!! In desperation I changed from filling up with diesel at my local Supermarket to a BP station, putting 2/3 tank of regular diesel to fill up. Almost immediately the car is running smoother, not quite as well as 3 months ago, but is this because I still had 1/3 of a tank of previous fuel.
  • Toyota Auris 2010 - TR 5dr 1.33 VVT-i - Carbon Build EGR Valve after 4 Years 8 Apr 2014 (Forum)
It shouldn't be so coked up after 22k and 4 miles. All they said to me was - tut, tut you shouldn't get your fuel from supermarkets, but Esso or Shell. Cobblers. Esso + shell may have more detergents in the premium stuff, but the standard isn't much / any different from supermarket. It all comes from the same tanks / source - ie.
