  • It's not all Black and White! 15 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have 2 cars A Volvo C70 T5 Auto and a VW Bora 1.9TDI Auto. I drive 38 miles each way to work so 384 miles week. I've driven both cars to work for a week and worked out the average Fuel Consumption for each The Volvo 35mpg and the Bora 47mpg. Doing my sums it will cost me at todays fuel prices £553 a year more to drive the Volvo to work over the bora.
  • Which company car to choose ? 13 Jul 2008 (Forum)
In two weeks time, I start a new job. After over 25 years of driving, I will be getting my first company car. The job will involve journeys of between 10 and around 300 miles, carrying a small amount of computer equipment and tools. I would expect the driving to be mostly motorway / A roads, with relatively little town / city driving.
  • 'Needing' to drive fast when there is a emergency? 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
To be able to let other road users know that I was in a genuine situation 'could' have enabled me to get to the hospital sooner. As a side note, I also wonder whether at other times those people that are driving at v. high speed (i.e. 100mph +) past me are also genuinely needing to get somewhere asap. To have a means of indicating this to me would at least temper my inbuilt rage at being cut up at times ;-) At the end of the today however, I suppose that any such method is liable to misuse......
  • Need new job - but driving's all I know! 25 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I'm very much feeling that I need a change but I'm stumped as to what to do next. I've done 10 years on service bus work so don't want to go back to that. I tried taxi driving before that and definitely don't want to do that! Driving is really all I know but I really need something that a) pays more and b) gives me more of a life. Any thoughts folks? Thanks in advance...
  • Not driving in Dublin 20 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Hardly a vehicle in sight under five years old, but congestion to make a Londoner blench. Driving back to the airport from Killiney on Friday evening with two charming second cousins once removed in their hire car, they showed how to reduce the journey time - for about 20 miles in all - from two and a half hours to one and a quarter: pay to cross the toll bridge and go through the very long new toll tunnel, at a total toll cost of ten or twelve quid.
  • Driving in Italy 10 Sep 2007 (Forum)
A few random observations after two weeks on the roads of Italy The worst sign-posted roads I've ever encountered - tiny direction signs right at junctions, no warning at all. LOADS of Truvelos painted grey in villages which might account for how slow the Italians drive - this really surprised me, I was expecting much more spirited driving and liberal use of horns and lights - experienced almost none of that Awful motorway inter-changes often where two lanes merge and then de-merge within 100metres so you have two lanes of cars jostling to get across each other - that was fun.
  • Driving in Ireland 3 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Perhaps there is a company that sells transfer panels to cover your windows! We didn't visit any big cities so I don't know what driving in Dublin is like - probably like any other big city - i.e. terrible unless you know exactly where you are going!
  • Ford Focus unexplained noise, 1.6 Zetec. 18 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I really hope somone can help me. I have a Focus 1.6Zetec (Black) on a 01' plate, 80k miles. Driving around town its a really nice, acceptable drive (For what it is) but when I drive at between 55-60-70+ MPH It sounds like the car is doing 95-100MPH!, Kind of like a revvy, vibrating droney noise.
  • Do people actually CARE about their driv 17 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I don't know how we do it, but it seems to me that unless we wake people up to the profound responsibilities driving involves, we won't get anywhere.
  • W reg Mondeo 1.8LXi - options 8 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I tried to drive it onto my drive and it made a crunch and now won't even start. AA man says sounded like timing belt off. I've had someone else look at it since who says engine is not repairable and exhaust is broke.
  • Insurance for 2nd car while selling? 1 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I have just bought a car privately and so am going to be selling my old one (the VW Polo, once I get the central locking problem fixed!). I have switched my main insurance policy to the new car as that's the one I'll be driving. I need some insurance for the Polo to cover fire, theft, and me driving to the MOT station and back. First question: my current insurer (Diamond) won't offer any cover for unnamed drivers taking it out for a test drive, is it standard to rely on the potential buyer's policy and their cover for driving other cars?
  • I was carjacked last night (almost) 2 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Five minutes after the police came (within a few minutes) there was a call over the radio.... the gang struck again and dragged a guy out of his Golf GTI and drive off with it. I keep shivering at remembering the sight and sound of the hammer hitting the window. -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
  • Two car family, new & old 9 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The other is a Citroen Saxo 1.5d 1997 P Reg with 66,000 miles on the clock. The Scenic is great to drive, comfy, quiet, great engine etc. However, and this is the point of this thread (eventually) there is something raw and basic about the Saxo that makes it so enjoyable to drive. It is difficult to put into words but it is such an involved driving experience.
  • Drink drive Road accident 9 May 2004 (Forum)
Fortunately, one officer was pointed in the right direction and went running to grab both relevent collars. He duly brought them back to start establishing who was driving at the time of the accident. It is then you realise how a professional PC gets answeres! Callington is a small community and a number of traders and residents have long complained about the growing yob culture in the town centre.
  • VR6 bearing probs - VW dealer negligent? 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
The garage have had such problems removing the bearing, that they have had to remove the whole assembly, including the drive shaft, to enable the drive shaft to be freed, and then get a very worn bearing out of the hub. Their opinion is that the bearing is so worn, that it couldn\'t have been replaced within the last few months.
  • The nerve of some people ! ... 5 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Brilliant story from the local papers: 'A' and 'B' travel to a canoe race, driving their landrover. Having nobody to drive their LR from start to finish, they ask if somebody would be prepared to do it for them - this is a common occurence, apparently. Volunteer 'C' steps up, and says OK.
  • Wanting to install speed bumps 11 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Now we would like to install two speed bumps at strategic points in the drive. We have brochures of the heavy duty rubber speed bumps seen on the roads, but these are expensive and don't look very nice. The drive in effect cuts across our front gardens, so while safety is paramount, it would be good to have something reasonably attractive.

  • What men say they want 31 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Our friend enthused about the Reliant to anyone who would listen without laughing: there was no rust, he could mend any dents himself, it was so economical, comfortable, versatile, a little noisy but quieter than the bike etc etc etc. Eventually he decided he could afford driving lessons, and although it was a struggle to adapt his driving style he successfully passed his test. Within a week, the Reliant had been replaced by a shiny black Cavalier. A mutual friend expressed surprise at this.
  • The Short Arm of The Law 9 Aug 2001 (Forum)
He told her that the security cameras could not pick up those lanes, so unless it was busy they were shut in order to discourage drive-offs. She jokingly said that now she knew that, she would know which lane to use if she wanted to do a runner without paying. His reply astonished her, when he said that she could drive off from any lane and get away with it, as the cameras could pick out her registration number but were not sharp enough to show an identifiable facial image without enhancement.
