• Astra running rough (longish) 28 Jul 2003 (Forum)
  (The injector itself has been replaced but this made no difference). Then started running rough when fully warmed up/driven for about 1/2 hr. ECU warning light started coming on sporadically, again when warm/driven >1/2hr, turned out to be EGR valve. Replaced. ECU light stopped coming on, but still tappy injector & rough running, now getting more noticable even from cold.

  Here goes.. bought a non running mondeo mk4 2008 2.2 titanium x and have tried all sorts to get it running first off the pump/sender unit in the tank was not pumping fuel up to the filter so replaced that .replaced the fuel filter too.the problem im having is it will not start .

  After a bit of trial and error this morning, I've worked out that it's only whilst the engine is running that I have the problem. If I turn the engine off, I can run through the gears with no problem at all.    3rd - 5th and reverse select absolutely fine with engine running or not - so the problem lies only with 1st and 2nd whilst the engine is running.

   Is it possible to do this as a DIY job, or is it for properly trained and equipped persons (i.e. garage) only? - Can I replace the tyres with non-run-flats?  Not sure if dynamics would be unduly impacted, or whether the inflation warning system would be unhappy (run-flats generally operate at higher pressures).  There's a spot in the well of the boot for a spacesaver which would be preferable to wrecking a tyre by having to drive it to the garage.

  I currently drive about 600 miles/week, and it looks like I will be doing so for a couple of years to come. I'm currently running a 2006 Focus TDCi, which although fairly fuel-efficient (50+mpg), running from 60 to 150k miles has so far cost, apart from usual service, tyres etc: £1,000 - DMF/Clutch £600 - turbo £500 - injector service So the idea that diesel's are great & cheap to run is nonsense - great on a company car/3 years, not for private use over an extended time.

    I purchased for next to nothing, so I expected it to have problems. Anyway, when cold, the car is difficult to start, and does not like to stay running. Once running, it is running so rich that it's pouring smoke out of the tailpipe. Obviously it's missing terribly as well, from the spark plugs being covered in soot from running so rich. So far I've only replaced the Lambda, to no avail.

  I stopped the engine and re-started after about five seconds, it now runs perfect! Drove home (about 60 miles) with no further problems, but the exhaust pipe is definitely showing it running rich. I've done a MPG check and it's doing about 40 MPG, so does not seem to be using fuel to any massive excess at all.

  The cooling fan appears to have taken on a life of it’s own. It runs on after even the shortest of journeys. Indeed, it ran on when I simply moved the car off the drive this morning.  Whilst driving it comes on and goes off in what seems a random way, regardless of the temp display reading.

  I have a problem with the gearbox. The car will run In 1,st gear (low) no problems. But when I drive it runs great until it shifts up to 2nd then it feels like the engine loses power and starts running as though the engine is seezing up. Any thoughts?

  Hi  Just been told its running on three cylinders is that  the glow plug thats not working or is it more than this its diesel there are no signs of overheating or moisture in the oil so I'm sure theres no leaking head or other gaskits.

  Peugeot Partner - The battery light stays on when the engine is running - starts ok - but the light just stays on and the fan on the heater, indicators, and rear heated screen doesnt come on - although the head lights and the radio do? - Any ideas?

  hello can you help i have a2003 1.8 tdci ,when i start it in the morning from cold it smokes bangs and clatters and misses this lasts about a min or so then the car runs starts and drives fine for the rest of the day thanks from chris ?

  I have an astra 1.6 1998 running on 2 cylinders. the middle 2 are runing but ouside 2 are not..there is no spark on ouside cylinders from ingnition coil pack..so I bought a new ingition coil pack but no difference..still off two cylinders with no spark..engine management light is burnin steady any ideas....verno

  firstly little info about my car '91 sierra 1.8lt with piersbury carb. my problem with car is as the title suggests it has very rough running from cold, but fine when warm/hot. vehicle doesn't overheat and heats up like it should neither too fast or too slow. ideas welcomed solution even better.

• Can a diesel engine run backwards? 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
  Question is related to a previous posting in which I referred to an as-yet-unexplained 'abnormal running mode' which I experienced in a diesel car. I know that some stationary one-cylinder engines can be started backwards, but can a multi-cylinder diesel vehicle engine do likewise? Oz (as was)
• Citoen HDI "bang",smoke, poor running 23 Sep 2002 (Forum)
  Heading for Portsmouth last night, Citroen 1998 HDI 2 years old 29000, A3 exit on M25, loud bang from engine compartment (felt through bulkhead by passenger). Engine still runs, but very smoky and intermittent loss of power with occasional noise that sounds like a miss functioning servo.
