Petrol, diesel, hybrid? (No EVs please) - Advice on car for retirement 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Bit suspicious of Volvo since the Chinese takeover but I'm probably looking anyway at something that predates that. Open to Japanese or Korean though. I have a Mazda MX5, kept garaged, for sunny days though it only gets about 1000 miles a year, and I have thought of replacing both with a single car. But there are precious few open large cars and I'd probably want a tin top rather than a ragtop. -
Advice on buying a cheap used family car? 17 Feb 2020 (Forum)
I'm near Glasgow so choice seems a touch limited compared to London. I'd love a Japanese option, and the only one that seemed a contender was the Mazda 6 1.8 petrol, which is a distant 3rd place due to looks but I'm flexible. The least risky option seems a dealer due to some level of protection for 6 months and I'll be buying some kind of extended warranty anyway (mentioned below). -
New car - making a shortlist 28 Feb 2016 (Forum)
It's not just a matter of height off the ground - she gets in and out of her Mini Roadster without too much trouble. Out of the running - Mercedes GLA, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Mazdas CX-3 and CX-5 - spare wheel not even an option and no space for one. Sorry - that's a deal-breaker. Must be something about makers beginning with M. So shoot me down and/or tell me what I've forgotten. -
Honda CR-V / Citroen C3 1.4 Hdi - Should i sell my Honda CR-V or C3 ? :) 9 Aug 2015 (Forum)

What used family car? Too much choice is a curse.. 29 Oct 2020 (Forum)
· USED Audi A4 Avant TFSI 1.4 or 2.0 (S Line) o Pro: refined, well built and good looking vehicles, budget friendly due to popularity o Con; Boot space could be better – will this cope with demands of family-life · VW Passat Estate 1.5 TSI (SE Business or GT) o Pro - Passenger and boot space generous o Con – Questionable reliability · Mazda 6 Tourer o Pro – Good looking, and decent passenger and boot space o Con – Rare to find used · BMW 3 Series touring o Pro – Ride quality and driving experience, and ticks the snob box o Con – Lowest boot space so question practicality -
Shopping for auntie dear. 3 Sep 2020 (Forum)
The related Hyundai was also ignored. I’m fast running out of options. No to the Yaris, no to the Mazda 2 and no to the gorgeous Suzuki Swift I found. Next up the Peugeot 2008 which at last drew a smile. It’s the right size, it’s comfy, it looks good to her eye and it uses a simple and well regarded engine and a robust torque converter gearbox. -

Only 15k miles though and the pics certainly support the claims of it being immaculate. Comfy, spacious barge that most wouldn't give a second glance to, even the alloys look like wheel trims!. -
Bangernomics 22 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Resists Rot better than most and rarely falls into the hands of anyone under the age of 60 so few are abused. A perfect banger buy. The Mazda 3 is a close second and is much better to drive but rust is an issue. Get a solid one and it’ll be a great servant. Honda Civic up to 2005 is another good option but the Toyota wins it for me. If you must have a diesel then the Toyota or Honda 1.7 are the best bets. -
Smallish 4wd cars 27 Apr 2024 (Forum)
It's like someone designed an engine to be maintained and repaired properly. Brilliant. Mazda CX3 2.0 AWD 2018 ( think - Nice engine and gearbox. Handled beautifully, but the ride was very bumpy over country lanes. Very little space in the back. The one I drove was quite tatty and I was surprised how tired the interior looked (it was about 45,000 miles). -
Cabrio joy 10 May 2020 (Forum)
So what convertible would I say is the best ever made? Easy, it’s the Mazda MX5. My personal favourites are the early Mk I 1600’s, and the current model with the basic 1500 motor, the simpler the better. I’d love another one but I’m banned from buying anything with only two seats. -
Most impressed by 17 Apr 2020 (Forum)
Practical enough to serve as the main family car in 5dr form, able to do 250k in diesel spec and the best hot hatch on the road in GTi form. These wee cars were just right. Mazda MX5 1.6 Mk I 114bhp - Early cats were the best, later gens became heavier and had less feel. The Japs showed us how the two seater sports car should’ve been done. Prices for good early Mk I’s are through the roof which tells you plenty. -
New car shortlist - who's going to help? 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Dismissed: Renault Scenic and Citroen Picasso - too wallowy round corners, and the Scenic I tried had trim rattling or falling off at only 7,000 miles. Mazda 5 and 6 - road tests all say how noisy they are and noise is something I'm trying to escape from! Honda Civic (great to drive but I don't think I can live with the appalling rear visibility); the Accord Tourer, like the Mondeo, is bigger and longer than we need. -
Letter from the Colonies Vol.9 11 Aug 2005 (Forum)
For days the newspaper columns were full of irate letters; the balance of payments deficit, the exchange rate woes, the New People's Communist Army and the oil price increases were forgotten. Even the launch of the new Mazda 3 was upstaged. (Pity, it's a great looker). As of the time of writing, when I go home every night all 3 of the 4 lanes of the motorway are dominated by jaywalkers and buses parked at weird angles picking them up, just as before. -
Spartan Warriors. 7 May 2020 (Forum)
Ford Ka - I loved these and the more basic the better. PAS was a bonus but you were having too much fun driving it to notice the spartan spec. Mazda MX5 1.6 Mk I - Early cars had nothing on them at all. It was about driving and not about gadgets. A fantastic thing but just as spartan as the MGB and Lotus Elan’s etc it was emulating. To be honest most European firms in the 80’s and early 90’s had utterly basic models available right up to large saloons and estates. -
2500 miles per month. £2500. Diesel? Petrol? LPG? 1 Jan 2017 (Forum)
6) Hyundai i30/Kia Cee'd with the 1.6 crdi (if I can find one) 7) 2005 Honda Civic Executive 1.6 VTEC Petrol (To LPG) 8) Auris 1.33 vvt-i For what I read I should stay clear of pretty much every make that uses a PSA derived engine so No Mazda, Ford, Peugeout, Citroen and some Volvos. I should also stay clear of Renault and also stay clear of any make using Fiat derived engines so no Saabs, 1.9cdti Vauxhalss, Fiats, or Alfas. Finally I would like to have an opinion on the current state of affairs about LPG. -
My question to an MP regarding Bio-diesel - Reply! 4 Feb 2011 (Forum)
It appears this problem is not unique to Volvo, since another constituent has had the same problem with his Mazda 6 2.0tdi. My constituents believe that this problem has been caused by the now compulsory 7% biodiesel content of road fuel available at the pump. They also point out that these cars are fitted with a compulsory Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in the exhaust stream, which requires a regeneration process roughly every 300 miles. -
Pandemic bargains 6 May 2021 (Forum)
. £1300 paid and passed on to a previous customer who’s bought loads of cars off me over the years, this time again the fee will be another addition to the Rum collection. 2011 61 Mazda 3 1.6 Tamura in white with 66,000 miles and a near full history. Paid £2250. This would cost nearer £4K from a dealer and you’d have no clue about the previous owners. Instead I got to meet them face to face and had peace to assess the car properly without an irritating salesman pestering me. -
Choosing a second car - ideas? 10 Feb 2008 (Forum)
t even have a hot (or warm) hatch like latest Astra / Golf / Focus variants). Go up a size, and the Primera is woeful compared with latest Mondeo / Mazda 6. They don?t have an MPV to tempt me from my Grandis or to compete with S-MAX, C-4, Espaces, Galaxy? they don?t have premium mid-size saloon either like Audi A4, BMW3 / Lexus IS ? nothing!!!!! what do they have? -

And if one of the most intriguing, eagerly awaited cars of the year - the Fiat 500 - is as good as it's expected to be later this year, the Italian firm that makes it will deservedly receive its biggest boost since the glory days of the original Panda and Uno. Closer to the top of the rankings, Mazda and Honda are taking over from Toyota/Lexus as the makers of the most reliable cars. Nissan is another Japanese firm that impresses me - not least because it is building the sort of reliable, desirable 4X4s that Jeep used to make.
