Changing Times 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Now, in her town alone, there are any number of Threes and Fives, just about any VAG offering you care to name (including a W12 six litre A8 as well as the expected Fabias and Octavias), the odd Merc, more and more Hondas and Nissans, and a few Volvo XC70s. Korean Cheapies are moving in on traditional Skoda territory, though Ford is conspicuous by almost total absence. Domestic building infrastructure still has a drab, neglected air to it, (though a fortune is being spent on public buildings it seems) and whatever has brought relative personal wealth in advance of EU membership has been massively spent on cars. -
Spanner-How to survive your local garage 6 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I trust you will now be issuing a correction, as you have had to do already regarding the running costs of the Volvo, and the 0-60 time of a 1969 Ford RS1600? -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 2002 GT TDI 130 - first impressions. 18 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Inside too it's very pleasant, with good quality materials and a level of fit and finish which is a step up from the Renault. It does not however have the same "hewn from rock" feel as the Volvo, with some of the buttons being a little creaky in use. Somewhere in between the two, then. The overall design is very attractive, although the location of the slightly fiddly Climatronic system right at the base of the centre console is less than ideal. -
Used family car - CX5? 3 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I had looked at the Nav+/Sport+ versions, but again having read on here, it seems that maybe best to avoid all the electronic add-ons, so that there's less to break. Something relatively refined and simple then would be good. Having looked at Volvos, CX40 is just about within a stretch budget, but at a high mileage version, which i'd like to avoid. CX60 would be the older shape, and a little on the functional side (cabin looking quite dated), and mostly seem to be diesels. -
Any - New car, how hard can it be? 18 Oct 2019 (Forum)
The salesman said that Honda has improved this in the face lift but they had none in stock and anyway wouldn't be in my price range. Its shame that Honda has lost its way for traditional buyers, Finally I dropped into the Volvo dealer. I've always liked the look from afar of the V40 and they had a few at good prices. However its just too small. I reckon the 1.4 Octavia is worth a look and its more powerful than the Golf. -

Seat Leon FR TDI - To replace or not? A diesel dilema 28 Apr 2011 (Forum)
One thing I do want is better comfort than the Leon gives - it's ride is terribly hard: 2010 Volvo C30 T5 R Design (£15k) 2010 Skoda Octavia VRS TFSI (we have had a diesel Octavia in the past so know what I'm dealing with here) (£15k) 2010 Honda Civic Type R (£15k) 2010 Mini Clubman Cooper S (£15K- This would be a leftfield choice for me!) -
Ford Mondeo TDCi 130 Zetec - Replacement for poor Mondeo 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I'm angling towards an Accord (2003 onwards) because my wife has a Civic which is a gem to drive and just feels that much better made than the Ford, but have also considered everything from Volvo V50/S60/V70 to an old BMW 5 series diesel (though I think there's some wish fulfilment there!), to a Passat (though I know they may not be great high-milers), to the old model Audi A6. I'd really appreciate it if Backroomers could offer opinions on those cars as sound buys, what it's like running an older high-mileage car (it would be a first for me), and any suggestions about other family-size vehicles. -
Which car to buy? 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Jag X Type 2.0d Sport - As per the Mondeo really, also concerned at possible discontinuation leading to plummeting resale values. Volvo S60 D5 Sport - I really like these to sit in, but only like the looks of ones following the 2004 facelift. Heard of no major problems apart from heavy tyre wear and some injector problems. Concerned that this may be replaced soon and consequently the resale value of older ones will plummet. -
Diesel v petrol - nearly-new comparison 11 Mar 2008 (Forum)
It's possible that the 1.8 engine isn't up to hauling a short but not small car, so I'll try one and find out. I very much like driving a good diesel - my Volvo D5 is terrific - but not at any price. Has petrol power really become that unfashionable? And have I stumbled on a special case, or is this the same wherever you look? -
Towing - common fail D or petrol v costs 19 Jun 2007 (Forum)
In two garage visits since March, I have spent over £2k on bills (injector no1 and failed turbo). It strikes me that a petrol - say a Volvo 2.4 - would offer similar power (ok, perhaps not the torque) and I'd have a better chance of maintaining it up to 8-10 years old. I just can't see a way of doing that, these days, with these common 'fail' diesels. -
Door skin dent resistance properties 13 May 2006 (Forum)
The crease always propagates for some distance from the contact point, too; yesterday's dent is actually a small sharply radiused one from the corner of the Mercedes door moulding but the door is creased enough to show in oblique viewing for an inch vertically either side. I made one of the dings by letting the Pug door clatter in to the side of the Volvo on a moderately breezy day. No paint was swapped but the dent was made. My father's S80 is similarly affected with dents and so was my brother's V70, recently sold. These dents have nothing to do with increased showing of them due to body panel shape or shiny paintwork so it seems that the Pug's tinpot sheet metalwork is actually an advantage in the car park world (if not a collision!). -

Selling: ebay v autotrader v dealer 12 Apr 2006 (Forum)
For some rather complicated reasons, I will be returning to the UK in a few weeks time to sell a 1 year old Volvo XC90 (2.4d SE right hand drive, exported on purchase and which I will first re-import - it has the full UK guarantees etc). I can only really spare about 4 or 5 working days in London, before needing to return overseas. -

What to buy????????? 3 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Not as van driver anyway (check my profile). The only thing with the BMW, what would my new boss think? He drives a 2001 Volvo S60 2.4T. Will it be a bit flash, even if it is 3, to 4 years old? Now I know what your all thinking, he (for I am) has not mentioned running cost's. Refinement and style rule my heart, 36 mile round trip to work (via Dartford tolls) rules my head. -
Where’s the joy? 10 Jan 2021 (Forum)
With this in mind I started thinking about potential less sensible and potentially less reliable replacements for old “Terrance” the Toyota now that family car duties have been handed over to “Venus” the very capable Volvo. Wife to blame for car naming btw. The Toyota has been utterly dependable and drives without fault. The body is rust free and the underside looks like a three year old car despite the salt crusted roads here in Ayrshire. -
Peugeot 3008 eHdi semi auto - Subject real mpg 4 Oct 2016 (Forum)
My driving style has not changed I have always driven 2.0 ltr or above vehicle and have always had good economy in fact whilst they changed the best box for the first time I was loaned 3008 full auto 2.0ltr hdi for two weeks and that car returned 43 mpg running around and 56 on a run . So next month my new car arrive it a Volvo xc60 D5 223 bhp it's in the same co2 area as the Peugeot and I bet it gives me better mpg . Do not believe all the hype about these green car it all bull The day they make 500 mile electric car that take 20 to full recharge and cost the as an equivalent fossil fuel vehicle we be my time to go green otherwise it all lies smoke and mirrors we are being sold a lie and the government and the fuel companies are making a packet out of use by charge hi fuel prices why is shell nitro+ only 55p a literal in Morroco? -
Buying a car. Can you help with the 3Ws and H? 16 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I've been scouring the market for a decent secondhand buy (up to 3 years old/40k miles) since the summer but prices appear to have got carried away. I can't afford to buy another Disco 3 and why would I buy say an out of warranty 3 year old Volvo XC90 for 85% of the price of a deeply discounted new one? I read that HJ thinks the next couple of weeks is the best time to buy secondhand before prices go up again in time for expected demand in January. -
Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - Sell privately or in auction? 23 Aug 2009 (Forum)
It was an expensive mistake to make and all that but life is too short and thankfully I can swallow any financial loss that making such a tardy move has meant. I will have exclusive use of my parents volvo estate for about 6 months from November onwards, so I'm planning on selling the Touran mid November-ish and then sitting on the cash until May at the latest, so I have plenty of time to look for a good 530i or 530d.
