vauxhall dealer have already got £70 from me today to run a 'diagnostic' on it i will come back with the error code it gave when i pick it up today, but they want up to £189 to run further diagnostics. I told them to shut the bonnet and not to bother. Anyone any ideas?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2000 1.8 Starting Problem 15 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Fuel pump Cranking sensor Coolant temp sensor I have a feeling it is something to do with fuel, but not sure. It seems to run fine when its running other than occasional slight (up to 2000rpm) revving coming up to junctions when the clutch is depressed (perhaps completely unrelated?). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  • Audi A4 B6 (2001 - 2005) - 2002 1.9TDi Engine died and won't run right 14 Oct 2008 (Forum)
He went to recover it and it started eventually but spluttered on and off for 1/2 mile back to his garage. He has apparently left it running for more than half an hour ticking over and has been fine, although driving it under load it splutters and cuts out. I have had it serviced 3 weeks ago - maybe 800 miles or so and it was MOTd on Saturday and done around 15 miles before this - coincidental??
  • Volvo V70/XC70 (2000 - 2007) - Good buy or not? 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
NJGLeeds ps I do all my own servicing/repair work wherever possible as a keen(ish) car restorer in the little spare time I have left, so the labour aspect of running costs is irrelevant.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - Sport 1998 1.6 sounds like its running on 3 2 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I turned the car around and headed back home, switched off and back on to check the car was starting ok, which it does fine. I have a feeling (along with my nosey neighbour) that the car is only running on 3 valves, but am not 100% sure. As i stated it sounds similar to a dragster or what i can only describe as what american muscle cars sound like (a low grumbling sound), it smells slightly of burning, although i am unable to ascertain whether the smell is coming from the engine area of from the exhaust, and it seems to have lost a lot of power.
  • SEAT Leon (1999 - 2005) - 2001 1.6s 16v - starting problems from cold 19 Dec 2007 (Forum)
On calling out the AA/RAC they tell me that the engine has flooded. They start the car by keeping the starter motor running until the engine fires and keeps on running. Sure enough this works. What appears to happen is that the engine fires up dies and then re-fires up in 5 seconds and then its OK. I have had the car serviced and the fault is still there.
  • Mercedes 190E Misfire 18 Apr 2006 (Forum)
The car will run perfectly for 2000 or 3000 miles, then suddenly develop the misfire, especially pulling away from a junction. It lasts any where from 100yd to 30 miles, then disappears and runs fine again, until the next time.
  • 'Cold' Starting problems. Polo 1993 17 Apr 2006 (Forum)
t smell of petrol, so I?m quite sure the problem is strictly limited to cold starting and is not present when running. As always, any help is much appreciated.
  • Mystery smoke - 1992 rover 827 v6 8 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Alternatively it could be the car sucking auto transmission fluid up from the box, but wouldn?t this be seriously toxic and also surely it would continue all the time the car was running? Finally could it be the catalytic converter? This looks pretty old and the converter is designed to output carbon dioxide and water, so is this just left over from the last time the car was run.
  • Uni Run - observations 21 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Did the Uni run on saturday to bring dear daughter home for Christmas. Life will not be same for obout a month!! That aside some observations from the trip which is mostly motorway/dual carriageway. Only saw one police vehicle (marked) Traffic was much much lighter than expected for the Saturday before Christmas.
  • Unorthodox Decarbonising 1 Sep 2005 (Forum)
DECARBONISE WITH WATER A TRY-ANYTHING-ONCE motorist has enormous faith in the following distinctly unorthodox method of decarbonising his car. He first gets his engine really hot and then sets the slow-running adjustment so that the engine ticks over at the revolutions required to travel at about 20 miles per hour in top gear. He then pours ordinary tap water directly into the air intake of the carburettor and then sits down to gloat over the uneven way the engine begins to run.
  • Prescott Hillclimb Drivers School 6 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Again the runs were all videoed but this time everyone in the class was getting closer to a correct line. All I would say is if anyone offers you a days tuition at any of the hill climbs in the country it is well worth rearranging the work schedule for a day !!
  • Low Mileage usage? 12 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I was thinking of changing it for an older automatic (93-onwards). Should I go for a petrol or a diesel? I should stress I'm not worried about running costs - so the 'diesel-savings' are irrelevant - plus it's only 5k miles per year. Am I being too paranoid about potential engine damage? many thanks in advance, K
  • Mitsubishi Colt playing up 25 Jul 2004 (Forum)
My suspicions have been further confirmed this morning when for the first time I started it and immediately increased the throttle to about 2500 rpm, and keeping my foot constant at that point....this had the effect of showing me that with every \"shudder\" or \"jump\" (the effect noticed when running on 3 cylinders)that the engine made, the revs increased a little bit...so the revs were increasing in steps until the engine was running fine, I had not moved my foot atall. This gave me the impression that a valve was slowly opening up in steps until it was fully opened.
  • Advice appreciated - Citroen BX 1.6 1 Feb 2004 (Forum)
ViewItem&item=2457064960&category=18174&rd=1 I have e-mailed the seller about the car as I am quite keen on it, and he sent the following reply: When the car is cold is runs fine on the choke, when the choke initially switches off it runs lumpy for a bit. It cut out on me at junctions etc. This could be because the choke is switching off too early. After about 10 minutes it then runs fine again.
  • S80 aircon and fuel consumption 15 May 2003 (Forum)
Naturally I did not choose it to save on petrol bills and following HJ's advice - and what I have seen in The Back Room - I run it solely on Optimax. However, HJ's other advice re aircon in FAQ 20 comes at a price - HJ recommends leaving aircon on all the time and running it hot and cold from time to time etc - advice which I have been following.
  • Rover 200SDi not Revving No Power ! 22 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I started to pull away but the engine had no power only made it to about 8mph. I revved the engine out of gear and it only managed around 1.8-2k revs before running out of steam and not going any higher !!! Any body have a clue what this could be. The RAC couldn't rind the problem and now a rover dealership have had it for 5 days and are running out of idea's ?????
  • The "Frying Squad" 13 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Three Welsh motorists have already been caught and fined for using waste oil from restaurants selling the favourite deep-fried dish, the Times reported on Wednesday. "I have halved my motoring costs since I started running my Subaru on cooking oil," the paper quoted one of those stopped as saying. "The car runs just as well and even smells a lot better than diesel." The drivers were fined 500 pounds and warned that persistent offenders may face up to seven years in jail.

Two tricks: 1. Run up the road in front of the car eventually slowing to a stop in a crowd in front of the car where they subsequently taunt and hurl abuse at the occupants. 2. This is the especially good one: Crowd of surlies walking on/off curb as car attempts to get past.
  • POLO WARNING and more advice sought! 6 Mar 2002 (Forum)
    1) DO NOT BUY AN OLD VW POLO WITH THE INTENTION OF HAVING A CHEAP CAR - the following is a list of breakages in 9 months, probably not exhaustive: -Radiator -Clutch -2 clutch cables -Brake pads, discs, cylinders -Tracking, very temperamental -Suspension components -Wheel bearings -Oil consumption and leaks EXCESSIVE DESPITE 140+ K -Exhaust: full system (blowing already after a month) -Fan belt -Ignition leads (POOR SERVICING by previous round-the-corner-use owner) -Latest: throttle cable spring, part-and-parcel of the carb - may need to replace carb if cheaper - was very scary as I was overtaking somebody and the revs shot well past maximum for about 10 secs before I could 'safely' turn off the engine to avoid seizure, then had to coast to a layby. -Also, see 'polo running very strangely' for running probs (although please don't respond to that thread) I'd guess that a better one, say G/H reg for about £1000, would be a more reliable, economical to maintain car, just wish I had taken this option as now its too late; I am a skint student and the car costs a lot to run yet is not worth what I need in order to upgrade. 2) ADVICE SOUGHT: new 'throttle butterfly spring' on carb, or is it better to get a scrap carb for £25?
