  • Too much power to be fun 23 Jul 2019 (Forum)
I’ve driven several recent hot hatches including ST Focus, Astra VXR, Mk VII Golf GTi and Golf R plus a rare Volvo C30 T5 and I’ve found all of them left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Yes they’re all undeniably much faster than the hot hatches of the past but with overly hard suspension and electric rather than hydraulic steering the feel is removed.
  • Am I bonkers? 16 Jun 2018 (Forum)
My question is, do I sell the Logan for something older and more interesting, perhaps with a few more cylinders? Maybe a Rover 75 Tourer V6, or a big Volvo or Merc (I’ve had a CLK which was fun). I would like something that can still do a few hundred miles comfortably and reasonably quickly, so I’ll resist looking for a Hillman Superminx like my Grandad had!
  • Renault Scenic - Need to change car? 18 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Preferred options - possibly a SUV (although not many will seat 5 in comfort), or an estate (Octavia/Volvo/Ford/Honda), which will be challenging on that budget.  I also need something with good fuel economy because of the mileage I do and something that just feels solid and predictable in poor conditions.
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe - Mercedes Coupes 26 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Which is the better long term/best ownership proposition? I plan to keep until electric becomes king (probably 4/5 yrs) and I've been driving a Volvo V40 diesel, so both are a step up and have great appeal but my heart is going C-class, and my head is going E-class! Any advice appreciated. Thanks! CB
  • Which car makers do / don't offer a spare wheel? 7 Aug 2015 (Forum)
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV- spacesaver standard according to the info on this site although when i had a test drive neither the salesman nor I could find it. Mazda CX-3 - no provision that I could see and the salesman wasn't sure. Volvo - optional spacesaver.
  • Mk4 Astra estate vs mk2 focus estate 2 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I've looked at the Mondeo but a nice one is slightly out of my budget and insurance is quite a bit high considering I'm already paying £128 pm for the Astra. Not really interested in Skoda's or Volvo's but just need to keep the small feet away from my back. I love the size of the boot in the Astra and understand the focus is slightly bigger but can find any specs to compare rear legroom space.
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - Sold it - Good Riddance! :-) 13 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Just read a thread about someone 'missing' his Volvo S60 after he sold it recently. Well, we sold a VW Golf Mk V a couple of weeks ago and I won't be missing it one bit! It was PANTS! Our fault, because we were totally taken in by the marketing hype and the drivel that some reviews contain.
  • Bums on Seats 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Can you please help in focussing my used car hunting ..... at the moment my draft list extends to ..... Volvo XC90 & V70, Mercedes E Class Estate, BMW 5 Series Touring, VW Passat Estate. I'm working to a budget of £18k max and in light of the number of messy children would have leather seating as a prerequisite to help the cleaning-up process.
  • How quickly does a car look old fashioned ? 3 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Some cars stand the visual test of time better than others whereas others age very quickly when their production run stops. For example, I think a Volvo 850 estate still looks reasonably modern where another maker's early 90s model might look positively antidiluvian. It's the speed at which it happens I notice. One day a car looks OK or even modern, the next it's yesterday's child.
  • SEAT pulls out from Touring Cars 26 Sep 2008 (Forum)
They have also invested a lot of money in putting their TDI racers on the track and even winning races. Many moons ago, when Volvo first brough their T5 Estates to the BTCC, I felt that this gave them a whole new image etc and the same has happened with SEAT IMHO. Curious as to reasons for withdrawal, wonder if they had decided the TDI was too expensive or maybe not competitive enough, but could not go back to petrol for marketing reasons?
  • secret squirrel police cars? 1 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I currently work in Oxford /live in london that means my commute regularly sees me 'observing the speed limit' down the M4 / M3 what did I see heading westwards on the M3 thursday 3 ugly brown audi's (looked like A2's) all new, all with some type of strobe mini light stack on their roof's, all doing well over the ton and racing in convoy. then I remembered last month on the M4 seeing the EXACT same hue on 4 volvo C class estates (with the same type of light stack) again heading westwards. Now I travel a lot and havent yet seen (or been stopped by) this type of brown vehicle stopping those with flagrant disregard for the legal road speed limits (lol) so Im guessing they must be some type of 'specialist vehicle' or........ 1.
  • BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - New 5 Series Touring: green as colour choice? 22 Aug 2007 (Forum)
When it comes to colour choice, black or some sort of metallic silver, grey or blue seems the obvious default choice from the somewhat limited BMW palate (compare with Audi or Volvo) - it's what everyone else has after all. But the other half quite fancies deep green, having decided that all these, together with gold, burgundy et al were definitely out. I quite liked black but decided it liked to much like a hearse in SE mode so I had settled on silver but am being told I should open my mind and buck the trend, and, besides, it will match her green Mk1 MX-5 on the drive.
  • Hiring a Jaguar XK8 for week-end? 14 May 2006 (Forum)
I'm also a great fan of the Jaguar XK8 (it's sooo sexxxy & voluptuous); in theory I could buy one but I'm too stingey to liquidate some of my assets. Plus it's not suitable for taking rubble to the tip; so I'm hanging on to my J-reg Volvo estate for the time being (I'm actually very pleased with this crate; it certainly meets my current motoring needs). The gentleman knows of my affection for Jaguar XK8; and occasionally tries to sell me one that enters his business radar.
  • Honda Civic or ? 14 Mar 2006 (Forum)
At present the new Honda Civic is top of their list, with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Jazz there as well. I have also suggested the Volvo V50, Alfa 157, BMW 1 series and the VW Golf. What other cars do you think they should look at that would meet their needs? -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

  • how to get a refund due to dodgy car 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
s report from another garage stating what?s wrong with the car before I can pursue my refund. I?m dropping the car off at Volvo dealer in the morning to get them to look at it. I reckon the suspension is worn out in terms of bushes and tie rod ends etc., perhaps the shocks too. Any advice from you guys? Bought it from a car supermarket.
  • 'Low mileage' taxi 2 Jun 2005 (Forum)
The other possibility of course is that it had actually done 1.216M miles (70k pa!). Incidentally, it wasn't even the oldest cab I saw that night - there's also a D-plate Volvo 740 floating aroud the town; no idea of the mileage though
  • Large 4x4s again! 23 May 2005 (Forum)
So why is there a much greater backlash against the 4x4? One way around the problem is for Merc, BMW, & Volvo to produce prestige MPVs which are far more acceptable to the masses and Livingstone, unless of course Livingstone is simply a jealous ********* who won't let nayone else have what he can't have for himself.

  • New car - zoom, zoom, zoom 29 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I guess it feels a bit quciker than it is since it is a very large car but thus far the only disappointment is the turning circle which is nowehere near as good a my old RWD volvo estate. I knew this would be the case so no surprise, just a pity. The car seems very well built and I like the simple display and controls. Compared to many cars it seems well equipped for the price and is a far superior offering to that of the Hyundai Trajet.
