How to buy a car 4 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Ok, so the time has come to flog the old workhorse and get something better, bigger and newer. Looking to buy a 2004 (or thereabouts) Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol or 1.9 Diesel. Due to lack of suitable cars for sale privately, I feel that my fate will lie in the hands of the west midlands 2nd hand motor trade. -
Cambelt change puzzle 15 Feb 2006 (Forum)
At 6 years old my car will in all probability have only done 16,000 miles and I was happy to leave the change till that age. What with new VW replacement changes and a train of thought that very low mileage use of cambelts can make them deteriorate quicker it has become a bit of a puzzle to me.If this was your car at what mileage would you change it. -
Big Bang Insurance 23 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I reckon there are plenty of people who would pay for this kind of insurance, especially with garage labour rates and parts costs getting ever more expensive. Perhaps restrict it to maximum 10 years old / 120,000 miles, set a high excess (say £500 minimum, to stop people getting routine repairs done on their insurance) and have a requirement for proof of regular servicing. Major mechanical failures aren't all that common, so the insurers should be able to make good money out of it, and it might even bring normal car insurance premiums down a bit, for those of us whse cars are too old to be worth taking out this kind of policy, even if we could get cover. -
This Sort of thing makes me feel sick to my stomac 25 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Rant mode off ~R From the Evening Standard ******************* Gunmen rob disabled man Two teenagers robbed a disabled man at gunpoint and stole his car, police said today. The 35-year-old man was parking his car in Clapton at about 9.30pm on Monday when two youths opened the door and held a gun to his head. He was pulled out of his car and left on the ground. -
Toyota Yaris snapped timing chain 3 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The Yaris is a new design with a new (VVTi) engine; my wife's car is just over two years old. If the VVTi engine has a tendency to break timing chains then Toyota have a real problem on their hands. Has anyone else experienced, or heard of problems with the timing chain? -
Used car dealer north london 17 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend a good/large used car dealer in North London (preferably nearish Islington)? Apologies for such a boring question, but I have no idea where to go. I need to buy a small car (Fiat 500, Ford Ka or the like) maybe 1 year old. -
Cheapest country in Europe for a new car 5 Nov 2017 (Forum)
A simple question with probably a complicated (and differing) answer. When i say new car i do really mean new to me. I am not ruling out brand new, but why pay new prices when you can get a further 20-40% off on a year old car? I am also looking for a LHD as i live in Spain, where the dealers won't do you a deal & used car prices are huge for one who is used to the UK second hand car market. -
The guy with the runaway car?? 2 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Anyone know what happened in the end to that guy who claimed to have his car runaway at full throttle and he was 'crying on the phone to the police' because he was scared to switch the car off and instead ran until it crashed. He was charged with offences in the end IIRC? Biggest load of old cobbler I ever heard in my life...surely it is better to have no PAS and heavy brakes in an unpowered car, rapidly decelerating, than to have a car doing 100+mph with burnt out brakes etc? -
any car - haggling 8 Jun 2020 (Forum)
hello all Below is a small explanation of the question, What can I expect to get if I was to haggle on a price of a car with regards to screen price, 12 month warranty ( peace of mind for a short time ), and a trade in of a 15 year old car ( we buy any car say £400 ) I live near Norwich and I am looking at buying a used car for the first time in 12 years and in that time car sales places such as carshop , evan halshaw and hammonds have popped up with what seems higher volume car sales so theres been a few changes since i bought a car. -
Damaged car in car park 1 Jul 2010 (Forum)
The same thing happened in reverse a few weeks a go. A car has gone into me and caused much more damage and just driven off. My front wing is quite badly damaged but my car is old and I'm not going to bother repairing it. But that doesn't make this ok, the person who damaged my car may not have a conscience, but I do. -

2003 citroen xsara picasso 2.0 HDI - Brakes to the right.. 4 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I have a braking problem on the above. The car pulls to the right when using the foot brake and its slow to come to a halt. I give it to my friend to sort out who is an old school mechanic working from home. He has said that no brake fluid would come through and he has even tried using a compressor to force it through and it still would not come through. -

Slowest driver. 25 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I came up to a roundabout in Telford last year, I was on the FJS600. I stopped on the line to let a car from my right enter the roundabout. It was an old, ordinary small saloon of some sort driven by yer archtypical little old lady who was looking ahead through the steering wheel. She came round the island and set off in the direction I was going, a single carriageway, 60mph, main road. -
More C-Class woes 21 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi, With my limp-home mode resolved - for now at least - I'm on to the next problem with my old Merc (wish I'd bought an Audi, even my old Xantia cost me less per mile). Driving home today I noticed a metallic clunking the o/s/f suspension. A quick inspection in the dark found the o/s/f of the car to have dropped - the wheel is up into the wheel arch, I'm surprised the tyre wasn't rubbing on the wheel arch when parking.
