  • cars & washing powder 7 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Each time a new/ revised model is launched the car buying public are told how much better than the old one it is. Just like washing powder, this makes me wonder how we all got along so well before. Apart from the obvious styling changes and any fancy new gadgets by how much is the average new car a significant improvement over its predecessor ?
  • Trading down... 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I have a Mercedes SLK, worth maybe 21k trade in or 23k-ish if sold privately. If I needed/wanted to trade down to an "old banger", what would be the best way of doing this, bearing in mind (a) money and (b) hassle? * sell the car privately? Do people buy cars this expensive privately, given the lack of a safety-net? * sell the car to a main dealer?
  • Why do we subsidise £30m pre 1973 VED exemption! 19 May 2013 (Forum)
Nor an exemption from the cost of my Shot Gun Certificate despite having it for my late father's gun made in 1919. So why for cars? These aren't old beat up Ford, Nissan or Peugot cars but large "toys" for those with the money to afford a £50,000 Jaguar E-Type or a £120,000 Mulliner Bentley? Hardly the sort of pockets that "need" a VED exemption?

  • Ford Fiesta - Ford Fiesta Ecoboost - 1.0 (2014) Timing belt 17 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I've seen another post about about this but it's a year or so old, so i though it would be worth checking for more recent info. I've taken my car to the garage due to acceleration issues mainly at higher gears, the car struggles to maintain pace on the motorway i'm in the slow lane doing 60 mph especially when there's a slight incline.
  • i30 Diesel 1600 Automatic - My Hyundai i30 Diesel Automatic, Problems 6 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I bought the used car, which was about a year old, from the Hyundai dealership. It's been serviced by them at the approprtiate intervals. It's done  about 57K miles. The car is nearly five years old. Faults or recalls whilst owning the car: The service book issued was not for my car, but for a Petrol automatic.

  • Taking the cash or not 7 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I'm looking for help in saving my sanity regarding the old co car v cash battle. I'm about to start a new job with opt out option. Previously for the last 15 years i have been a company car user with varying cars through the years. Like many i now have the option of taking cash benefit along with repayment for the fuel i use on business mileage.
  • When did you last scrap a car to rust? 10 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The other is my MG TF 160 that at 5 years old is showing signs of rust bubbling from the inside out of the drivers sill. This was in an accident when it was less than 6 months old and obviously not repaired correctly by the insurance co. Luckliy I notice these things and its going to need the job doing properly - new sill/qtr panel at considerable cost or a bodge up and spray to sell.
  • Getting an old registration number back 4 Sep 2007 (Forum)
As a rule, I'm not a fan of "personalised" number plates or anything silly like that but this idea has popped into my head and I can't get it out now,...
  • Head-on collision: Video clip (2) 14 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The second above link is a source reference (trial details). The first link depicts an actual head-on collision between a limousine and a car. The limousine chauffeur and his 7-year old girl passenger were killed instantly (the 7-year old girl was decapitated). The car driver survived and has been convicted for murder (possible appeal pending).
  • Going Nuts? 19 Aug 2002 (Forum)
The Micra looks like a toy with me in it, the Ka neither of us like. So have I lost my mind? I've spent the last four years espousing the benefit of driving an old car which is paid for and suffering the odd big bill - but I now find myself hypnotised by shiny metallic paint and finance deals. Will I regret this in 2 years time when I'm still paying out every month or will I be happy with the knowledge that I'm protected from big bills in my shiny car?
  • Honda CR-V Hybrid - our new motor 26 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Round town, it feels very lively with instant pickup, probably due to the lag-free response of the electric motor. On rural roads, it rolls less than the old car. It's going to take some time to get to grips with all the bells and whistles though! SWMBO hadn't completely got to grips with the old one, so this will be a steep learning curve for her, although to be fair it can be left in what in camera terms would be point-and-shoot mode.
  • Any - Scrappage - French style 6 Jan 2018 (Forum)
As part of its “Climate Plan” the French government has launched a scrappage scheme for older vehicles to encourage motorists to trade up to newer cleaner replacements. Your old car or van must have been registered  before 1997  for petrol vehicles, and  before 2001 for diesel vehicles … so probably not taking too many BR readers' cars off the road  The vehicle you trade in must be registered in France, and have been owned by you for at least one year.

  • Mercedes - Have they solved the rust issues? 21 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I've tried asking at a main dealer but couldn't get a straight answer! Yes I know I'll be looking at getting a car that will be towards 10years old and accept the odd small rust spot, but you see many other brands that stand the test of time well rust-wise.  I don't want to buy a lemon that will blister with rust spots, as I plan on keeping it for around 3years.
  • Various - Looking for a passenger seat "base" that folds up 13 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Long time lurker/old member of the HJ forums (about 4-5 years ago but lost the access details to the old account) So One for the car/mpv experts here Anyone know what car/models that have a passenger seat that folds "up" - ie the seat base part that you sit on bit which folds up to the back rest of the seat?
  • Toyota Corolla and Verso (2002 - 2007) - Come back Laguna,all is forgiven!! 25 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi, Having had a few largish bills for my old Laguna 1 in succession,I decided i would get rid and invest in a toyota as the trade tell me they are 'bulletproof'.So i bought a 05 Corolla Automatic...seemed like a good idea....big mistake! Although the Laguna is a much older design car,the level of comfort and refinement is way above that of the Corolla.Despite being a low mileage, fsh example i find the engine/gearbox very noisy at PARK or low revs, although the box is very smooth.Tyre noise from the front is,in my opinion, excessive. My wife has an old clio auto which is considerably quieter at 70mph!
  • Little things that prevent a purchase 27 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My cash was ready and waiting, price almost right, deal nearly done. Then I got put off by the smallest of things. The Colt CZ1 is almost 2 years old with no problems (apart from a few rattle in the dash), with the Mitsubishi service deal at £150 it doesn't cost much to trade in for exactly the same car again, so I was ready to have one after a few calls.
