  Replacing car battery : When a garage knows the make, model and age of car is there any reason to ask for the dimensions ?  Just happened and before I go to measure would like to know if/why it is necessary.  Many thanks

    The local garage had the car for a week - put on a new alternator but it was still undercharging. They charged up the battery from the mains and it was charging up ok. So they ruled out the battery. They ran diagnostics - only one error came up for the camshaft sensor which they replaced but the problems still occurring with the undercharging.

  The Ford super electronic intelligent charge system......Why, oh why. It's extra complication where it wasn't needed, requires a more expensive battery. Were the problems with ordinary batteries and charging systems so bad? I must admit, my Civic has had the same battery in for nearly 8 years (still going strong), my Honda Insight battery only lasted 9 years. neither car ever failed to start in the mornings.

  But, if a gearbox is fitted then less powerful motor can be used. This will draw less current and thus will increase range worth same battery. Then went still gearboxes are not fitted in EVs?
