  • nissan micra s auto 2001 - advice on what to get sorted? 23 Nov 2024 (Forum)
So, in the new year, what would you recommend I get looked at? All of it? None of it? What would you put higher on the importance scale? Bear in mind that if the CVT gearbox goes, it's a deal breaker and it's gonna be turned into a metal cube because fk that :P
  • Audi A8 - Air suspension saga 1 Jul 2024 (Forum)
I could live with the leaky strut, remembering to put a bespoke 30cm x 12 x 6 wooden block under the jacking point with ‘jack mode’ on if unused for a few days. It’s important to leave the car in ‘jack mode’ so the compressor doesn’t have to replenish the whole system every time the car is used.   Amazingly, a few weeks ago (at 76000 miles) I noticed the car no longer sank onto the block, even after well over a week.
  • SEAT Alhambra - sunroof exploded 23 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Fortunately, the company (JDHC, Coventry) they still intend to honour the warranty however this, again, led to a wasted journey. Seat legal got back to me saying they are not liable as their client only imports the vehicle and therefore they do not hold any liability, and they require the sunroof as evidence anyway (their garage took it off and, presumably, disposed of it).  Do I have a claim for inconvenience, injury and mental anguish here?
  • Essex County Council, Castle Point, Benfleet Essex - My Council Tax - 1.6% above RPI for 26 years ! 9 May 2014 (Forum)
    1) How can Essex County Council justify charging such an excessive amount, every year, above and beyond the RPI, of which Council Tax is an important constituent part? I note that since 2009 my CT has only increased from £1812 to £1870, due to the imposition of an almost solid 'freeze' on CT by the Government.

  • DPF Q&A -- sheds some light 1 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Applies to short journey drivers who have at least fulfilled the conditions for triggering regeneration. If the glow plug light flashes, the vehicle should be driven until it goes out. Important: Regeneration is carried out more often (2 - 3 times) during the first 1000 km of driving in order to achieve a defined loading status of the DPF. This is necessary to reduce component and system tolerances, and forms the basis for precise calculation of the soot loading in the DPF.
  • Falsely accused by a neighbour 31 Oct 2008 (Forum)
How he could think a car could do that without denting the body work (he works in the trade at a car import site), astounds me- although in the current climate may explain his stress levels. From my point of view, whilst I dont really want anything more to do with someone so unhinged, am above getting into a petty neighbourhood row.
  • A common misconception - Oil viscosity! 11 Aug 2005 (Forum)
This is difficult to explain but, if for example your oil temp does not exceed 120degC at any time then a good "shear stable" sae 40 is perfectly capable of giving protection. "Shear stability" is important here because if the oil shears it thins and that's not good! However, if you are seeing temperatures in excess of 120degC due to mods and track use etc then there is a strong argument to using an sae 50 as it will have more viscosity at these excessive temperatures.

  • Oil changing - myths and urban legends 8 May 2005 (Forum)
I always like to keep one eye on some other motoring forums, sometimes for nothing other than entertainment value. I recently read a post about changing oil on Imprezas where it was so important to protect the big end bearings that it was recommended that the filter be filled with oil before fitting, the spark plugs and crank sensor removed before filling engine with oil and turning the ignition several times.
  • New Car buying tips.... 1 Oct 2002 (Forum)
That way you do not get pinched like VW owners were in 2000 when VW UK categorically denied that they were going to reduce the price of UK-supplied cars after losing market share to imports. They then improved specs and finally reduced prices which resulted in some VW owners demanding money back from VW UK after having bought bonafide but relatively over-priced VW UK cars. 2. Don’t buy a light metallic colour.
  • Honda PCX is from 2019 - Seeking Solutions for My Honda PCX Speedometer Cal 2 Oct 2024 (Forum)
I was particularly intrigued by the idea of speed tracking which underscores how technology can enhance our understanding of speed in real time. This got me thinking about how important accurate measurements are in our daily lives, whether we're on two wheels or four. Just like a speedometer informs drivers, I believe a well-calibrated speedometer should be a fundamental aspect of any vehicle's operation.
  • What used family car? Too much choice is a curse.. 29 Oct 2020 (Forum)
    ·         Safety - Five star EURO NCAP ·         Style – This will be used for both family as well as business occasionally, so something that looks good (even sporty) is important i.e. not a Citroen Berlingo! ·         Longevity – I’d like to make the next car the one we drive for the next 8-10yrs as I’m not a fan of changing and switching regularly.
  • Honda CBR 600 RR - V5C/2 reference number not recognised 1 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I did a HPI check a few days ago and the ck53 plates match with VIN. HPI check also reconise the plate changes, not stolen, not scrapped, not exported, not imported, no finance, no write off, no mileage discrepancies. I couldn't check the fraud because I don't have the V5 serial number. Should I contact the police or should I wait to see what happens with the v62 application?
  • Accessible Classic: The Fantastic, Forgotten Citro 5 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Shame car design has moved backwards compared with this. 2.5 million sold tells you quirky does sell. Launched in 1970—the same year as the famous SM—the GS filled an important slot in the Citroën range. Up until the GS arrived there had been an obvious gap between the frugal 2CV and its derivatives and the large and luxurious DS. GS stood for Grand Series to really point out that this was the marques’ new volume car.
  • Thoughts on this 80mph idea? 1 Jun 2011 (Forum)
My concern would be for people in lower powered vehicles feeling vulnerable on these faster roads but the fact is the 80 limit wouldnt be a minimum, people would be mroe than welcome to travel at 70, but i fear people doing so would be bullied by your typical Audi driver who feels his journey is most important. Small engined vehicles have poor fuel economy at high speed in comparison with some larger engined vehicles, if they insist on doing this, it has to be done to be made plain that going at 65-70 is still perfectly ok for those who choose to do so, providing they're not doing it in the third lane LOL!
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - DVLA Scrapped car by mistake 30 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I signed the paperwork for the V5 (which I never personally received after). The car had 12 months tax - becomes important. At this time I had two cars including the new one. The old one had to be scrapped which it was a couple of weeks later. The company doing this asked my mum for some more paper work (I was only 19 still at home student) of which she gave them.
  • In Praise of LGV drivers 9 Oct 2006 (Forum)
As some more sensible contributors have already said it goes on all the time, deal with it. The importance of the LGV to the everyday running of GB plc has already been done to death. My message is the roads are there for all of us. So give your humble trucker a break. After all he/she is in reality a much better and safer driver than you. ;<)
  • 10k in an 'ugly duckling' ? 28 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Before anyone says it I know there is not as much room as a Golf or a Focus, but that was not as important to me, although the rear seats fold down very easily and create a very useful load space and my two kids climb in quite happily - worryingly SWMBO seems to be running low on petrol in her car a bit too often !
  • Am i paranoid about oil changes 30 May 2004 (Forum)
Where do i draw the line on oil changes Keeping in mind that cold starts do the most damage to car engines and to the deterioration of engine oil Two scenarios for comparison, both VW Polo 1.4 TDI PD Both bought new Service Schedule and Cost First Year /10000 miles (Oil change only) £85 Second Year/20000 miles (Oil change/service) £150 Third Year /30000 miles (Oil change only) £85 Forth Year /40000 miles (Oil change/service) £250 Mr Pensioner (me) My car is garaged and is used on average three times a week for round trips of not less than 15 miles and two trips from Sheffield to Scarborough each year. This is the important part, I start my car up from cold three times a week we are very rarely out long enough for the engine to get cold so it does not get a second cold start. In a year I start my car from cold 52x3 = 156 times My total mileage is about 3500 per year Mr Average Working Guy Starts his car up from cold to go to work finishes work starts his car up from cold again to go home.
