Hyundai Ioniq 5 N 2024: Prices, specs and release date

  • New Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the firm’s first high-performance EV
  • Up to 650ps promises supercar levels of performance from the five-door hatch
  • Bespoke N styling and interior give a racy feel
  • Released in 2024 with prices likely to start from more than £60,000

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a high-performance new hot hatch that marks the first time Hyundai’s highly-acclaimed N sub-brand has been used on an electric car.

Said to set new benchmarks for high-performance EVs, the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is eagerly anticipated by enthusiasts keen to see how fun an electric hot hatch can be.

There are no similarly potent direct hot hatch rivals to the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The Cupra Born has much less power, and even the Polestar 2 ‘only’ has up to 476ps. A Tesla Model 3 Performance has 456ps.

Petrol-powered super-hatch alternatives to the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N include the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, BMW M140i and Audi RS3, but even these can’t match the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s incredible power output.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N prices and release date

Now it has been fully revealed, the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is getting ready for its official market release. It is likely to be launched later this year, with deliveries due from early 2024.

The regular Hyundai Ioniq 5 range starts from over £43,000, with all-wheel drive versions priced from over £50,000. The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is therefore not going to be a bargain-basement electric hot hatch. We estimate prices are likely to start from over £60,000.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N styling, interior and technology

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a suitably extreme performance car makeover to match its searing levels of performance. It is 20mm lower than the standard model and the wheelarches are filled with huge 21-inch forged alloy wheels, fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres. 400mm four-piston front brakes are standard too.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a bold front end with an ‘N Mask’ fascia grille. The upper half is sealed off, while the lower section has side air curtains and functional air flaps for extra cooling. There is a lower lip spoiler; an optional Luminous Orange stripe is available, which runs along the side skirts to the rear.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has an extra-large rear spoiler and an aggressive rear diffuser and air outlets with more orange accents. The bumper is enhanced with a black cover featuring checker flag reflector graphics, and there is an N-specific triangular high-mounted stop lamp.

Interestingly, the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the only version to get a rear window wiper.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will be offered in an array of performance-themed colours including Performance Blue and Performance Blue matte, Abyss Black pearl, Cyber Grey metallic, Ecotronic Grey and Ecotronic Grey matt, Atlas White and Atlas White matt, Gravity Gold matt and Soultronic Orange pearl.

All new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N have the same interior colourscheme of black with Performance Blue accents. There are plenty of N features, with N-branded steering wheel, seats, door scuff plates and metal pedals.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N steering wheel now prominently features the N logo, and has dual round N buttons to set the drive mode. There are also coloured paddles for further customisation – including one to set the ‘N Grin Boost’ mode.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s seats are mounted 20mm lower than normal, and have reinforced side bolsters. There are knee pads on the centre console for further support during cornering.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a customised electronic driver display with dedicated N performance readouts. There are also performance pages in the central touchscreen display, including a lap timer.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 measures 4715mm long, 1940mm wide and 1585mm tall. It has a long 3000mm wheelbase. The firm has not yet confirmed how much it weighs.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N electric motor, performance and range

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has uprated front and rear electric motors and a two-stage invertor with increased energy efficiency. The motor and battery mountings are reinforced, as are front and rear subframes.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s front motor produces 226ps and the rear motor produces 383ps. Combined, they produce a total of 609ps – or, when Boost mode is engaged, a headline-grabbing 650ps.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N boasts 0-62mph performance in 3.4 seconds when Boost mode is engaged. It has a top speed of 161mph.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a higher resistance to heat-induced power degradation, thanks to an enhanced battery thermal management system. This has an increased cooling area, better motor oil cooler and battery chiller. There are also independent radiators for the battery and motor.

Fun features in the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N include N Grin Boost, which maximises acceleration for 10 seconds, and N Launch Control that gives three different traction levels for the fastest possible start.

N Drift Optimiser helps the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N maintain a drift angle, and N Torque Distribution varies front and rear torque distribution through 11 different levels. There’s a rear electronic limited slip differential as well.

A special N Battery Pre-conditioning setting optimises the battery cells to the most power-efficient temperature. Choices include ‘Drag’ for a short burst of full power or ‘Track’ that delivers the lowest-possible battery temperature for more laps.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has an N Race mode, which allows drivers to choose between ‘Endurance’ or ‘Sprint’. The former maximises track time by limiting peak power. The latter prioritises power for shorter bursts.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 also has N Brake Regen, a powerful regenerative braking system developed specifically for this performance model. Hyundai says it’s particularly effective when left foot braking.

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a new 84kWh battery, larger than the regular Hyundai Ioniq 5. The firm has not yet revealed the range, but has confirmed it will charge at up to 350kW. This will take it from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.

How does the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N differ from the standard model?

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a much more potent-looking EV. It is 20mm lower, 50mm wider and 80mm longer than a standard Hyundai Ioniq 5 – the latter figure due to its prominent rear diffuser. The bodyshell also has 42 additional welding points and 2.1 metres of additional adhesives.

Will the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N sound exciting?

The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has N Active Sound + which promises “ICE-like engine and exhaust sounds” as well as more futuristic EV options. Sounds are played through the 10-speaker sound system.

Can I take the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N on a trackday?

Yes you can. The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N “sets a new benchmark for thermal management in severe racetrack conditions,” says the firm – which will enhance its trackday abilities. The five-year, unlimited-mileage doesn’t exclude trackday use, either.
