Mercedes-Benz refreshes G-Class

Mercedes-Benz has updated the G-Class for 2012 with interior styling changes and a new biturbo engine in the G63 AMG version. The refreshed model goes on sale in the autumn with prices expected to remain similar to the current model which starts at £81,715 .

The G-Class has been on sale since 1979 and the latest version retains the the G350 BlueTEC engine. This V6 diesel develops 211PS with 540Nm of torque and gets a 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox as standard. New to the line-up is the G63 AMG which replaces the G55 AMG. This is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with 544PS and a huge 760Nm of torque. Ironically it also gets an 'Eco' start/stop system as standard and averages just 20.4mpg according to the official figures.

On the outside the G-Class remains as bold as ever with only minor changes such as LED daytime running lamps and new mirrors. AMG models gets an AMG specific grille, different bumpers and larger air intakes. They also have red brake callipers and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The biggest changes are inside with a new instrument cluster and a redesigned centre console. There is also a new colour information screen between the instrument dials along with the Mercedes-Benz Comand infotainment system with internet access as standard. Options include Blind Spot Assist, the Parktronic parking aid and adaptive cruise control.
